New Orange/Brown event!

Post by mbenecke »

It was announced this morning that there will be an Orange/Brown scrimmage on Sunday, October 21 at 4:00pm, which will be open to the public. There will be a three-point shooting and dunk contest, as well as an inter-squad scrimmage that has 15 minute halves. Some free food and free t-shirts will be made available, and Jerry Anderson will be doing the PA duties, as he will be all season long.

The full athletic department write-up is here: https://bgsufalcons.com/news/2018/10/8/ ... ct-21.aspx" target="_blank

I'm looking forward to it! It should be a great time, and I'm glad they're taking more steps toward fan engagement. Let's get some bodies in the Stroh this year, eh?

I'll do my best, Globe! Looking forward to another year of Falcon Hoops - I'm cautiously optimistic about this year's squad.

Browns play at 1, but I may try to catch the 2nd half of that game at BWW, so I can head over to the Stroh right after. Sounds like a fun/cool event.

I feel like Orange has a distinct advantage, based on experience.

However, if the coaches split these teams up for them to be competitive, I have to be encouraged that the staff sees equals to Turner, Frye, Plowden, and Wiggins on the other side.

I was thinking the same thing. It would be interesting to know how they chose the teams.

Like you, I apparently have a deeply-rooted masochistic streak. I'll also be watching the Browns. As I'm not close to BG, I look forward to any reports people will have on this year's basketball team.

The first half has been fun. Mattos has some talent, as does Laster and Fields. Uju is rocking the old school shorts as usual.

They had a three point and dunk contest. Plowden owned the dunk contest. All I have to say is Lillard better stick to lay-ups this season, because he didn’t make a single dunk in the contest.

Orange was down at halftime, 34-23. They seemed to get after it a little more in the second half, and they ended up winning 64-63 on a Dylan Frye catch and shoot buzzer beater from 30 feet. The ball was in-bounded with 0.5 seconds left, and I think it wouldn't have counted in a real game, but it's nice to see that shot go down regardless. Certainly a fun way to end a good afternoon of Falcon basketball.

Frye looks better. Like, significantly. And so did Lillard. He would have gone down as my player of the game if he hadn't had a clunker of a dunk contest. He was making shots off the dribble and defending better than normal.

Wiggins was shooting jumpers during warm-ups, and they were going down at a surprising rate. He stayed away from that during the scrimmage portion for the most part, but I thought it was good to see him working on another aspect of his game to develop into a more modern big.

I'm impressed by newcomers Laster, Fields, and Mattos.

Kulackovskis is also quite impressive, tying Dylan Frye in the three-point contest.

All in all, I was encouraged by today. I had the chance to shake hands with Coach Huger, and he said he thinks this team has the potential to be great.

Love to hear more about the new guys Mattos, Kulackovskis, Fields, Laster, Sierra and even Gadson who didn't play much last year.

What style game do they have. Etc.

Matiss (will always be as I will probably never learn to spell out pronounce his last name) has some skill. Nice jumper, very soft with some good range. And wasn't afraid to go inside for rebounds either. Didn't look like much of an athlete but if he can be a bit perimeter shooter I'm happy.

Laster showed some nice stuff attaching off the dribble. Including making a very nice pull up mid range jumper that really should have been the winner as I don't believe Frye got his shot off.

The rest of the newcomers didn't really stand out much to me, but I missed the first half.
