I have met Freeman. He was fantastically down to earth and a great guy. Can't speak to his coaching ability in anyway.drumstix2388 wrote:Yeah, I think Marcus Freeman is definitely a rising star, and probably a solid recruiter due to his experience and the fact he's a personable, young guy (see PJ Fleck), but calling him a proven winner is a stretch, at best. It'd be a high-risk hire.

He came from Purdue where they were terrible for 3 years. He doesn't seem like a difference-maker.
Feldman looks like he's pulling names out of his ass. How about

Re: Potential replacement?
Given some more time today, I think we owe Pelini the five weeks to see what he can do before looking outside the program. Not suggesting he's the man, but if there's some changes in culture and improved results I think that means something.

Re: Potential replacement?
My thought too. If the Pelini coached Falcons finish bowl eligible, I think the job is his.jpfalcon09 wrote:Given some more time today, I think we owe Pelini the five weeks to see what he can do before looking outside the program. LSU and USC did this recently. So far it is looking good on both parts.

Re: Potential replacement?
Actually, I think we should be talking to people right now to make sure we have someone in our pocket in case Pelini hasn't sufficiently made his case by the end of the season. This time is a gift. We should be using it to make sure we get the right person. If Pelini shows he has what it takes, give him the job. If not, be ready to make an announcement as soon as the season is over (if not sooner).jpfalcon09 wrote:Given some more time today, I think we owe Pelini the five weeks to see what he can do before looking outside the program. Evaluating Pelini and making contacts are not mutually exclusive.

Re: Potential replacement?
A good athletic director always has his list of candidates for the various head coaching positions. I am pretty positive that Moosbrugger is making/has made some calls to different ADs about prospective candidates and seeking permission to further engage them (which at this time would be to contact their agent and see if they have any interest in talking to us).Schadenfreude wrote:Actually, I think we should be talking to people right now to make sure we have someone in our pocket in case Pelini hasn't sufficiently made his case by the end of the season. Coach Greg Studrawa has a Twitter and Facebook page, drop him a message asking him throw is hat in the ringer.

Re: Potential replacement?
Expecting any coach to make strides such as winning out is not realistic. We have a limited talent level on defense. Expect more of the same. This is a much bigger problem than swapping coaches
Re: Potential replacement?
Anyone hear if BG is hiring a “search firm” to help?
Re: Potential replacement?
A list (for me)
No particular order
-Mike Elston, Nw Ohio legend at St Mary’s. Played at Michigan. Been with BK for a number of year
-Brian Wright (duck) OC at Toledo. Harbaugh inquired about his availability last spring before settling on McElwain. Would have to have absolute certainty that he would take the job. A public turndown would be worse than anything we’ve seen from Brandon or Jinks
-Luke Getsy, OC Mississippi State. 34 yrs old. Former Akron QB. Understands the landscape. Meets the “has traveled to Ohio” prerequisite
-Kalin DeBoer, OC Fresno. More MAC experience
- Louis Ayeni, a former UT name. Top recruiter for Matt Campbell at Iowa State, now RB coach and Recruiting Coordinator at Northwestern. Name was mentioned at both Michigan and Ohio State for various openings.
-Warren Ruggiero OC Wake Forest.
-If you’ve hung around here for awhile I’ve mentioned Brock Spack, HC/Illinois State (1AA) in every coaching search post Urban. Would he leave at this point?
-Jay Baldwin, DC Army (from Feldman’s list)
-My guess is Mike Houston is waiting on something larger than the MAC but what the hell, we’ll add him too. HC James Madison
-Bob Surace, Princeton HC. Only if he brings OC and staff. Princeton is averaging 600 yards a game total offense and I don’t care who you play that’s getting it done. Last yr’s QB (1 yr fill in is on NFL practice squad roster with Cardinals). Princeton alum, would he leave?
-John Grass, HC Jacksonville State. Likely not leaving Alabama and my guess is “never has been to Ohio”
-Danny Rocco, HC Delaware. Rebuilt Liberty and Richmond before going to Delaware. 57 yrs old but gets the Dave Clawson Program Builder Lifetime Achievement Award
-Brian Bohannon, HC Kennesaw State. Dominant run game would be tremendous for with Andrew Clair. Naval Academy is as far north as his coaching career has gone
-Matt Mitchell, Grand Valley State
- Tony Annese, Ferris State
-Zach would be welcomed on return. Maybe the only former coach of yesteryear I would want anything to do with but he’s not leaving the NFL for BG.
B list (not sure they leave; not sure how interested I would really be)
-Mike Tressell, Sparty DC underpaid for what e gets done
-Rodd Smith, Minnesota DC from fFleck’s staff
-Charlie Partridge, Pitt DL and former HC at Florida Atlantic
-Bo, YSU HC
-Butch Jones, Tennessee buyout makes it somewhat reasonable to put him on the list. BG’s money doesn’t matter when you have $10M+ coming in.
No Fly List
-Durkin
-Studwara, last effective OL wa in BG. OSU fans may pay his salary if he promises to leave
-Billy Gonzalez
-Mike Ward
-Gregg Brandon
-Tony Gibson
-Mike DeBord, IU (non) Offensive Coordinator
-Brian Polian, Grade A jerk and his dad is insufferable

Re: Potential replacement?
Brian Polian is NOT to be considered. Only weakness at ND right now is special teams as they have given up 2 TDs on kickoffs this season. To go from HC at an FCS school to struggling at Special Teams is not what we need.
I think Butch Jones would go to the top of my list. Has recruiting experience in the Midwest, started small and worked his way up to just get too big for the moment. Some coaches just aren’t made for the big time. He has coached against us so knows what BG is capable of being. Can assemble a coaching staff from connections and previous coaches he has worked with. The worst he can say is no. $500k looks a lot better than $35k!
