He also receives $125,000 for media relations, tv talk and radio shows and public appearances. So his base salary is $500,000. He is eligible for another $45,000 in bonuses for academic success and coach of the year. That's $545,000. If BG offers Houston a living expense and car expense, something JMU doesn't do, then his salary would be a wash. The only thing woukd be his buyout. As it stands after this season his buyout if he goes to a P5 school is $800,000 but is considerably less if he just goes to an FBS school. So the question comes down to if he wants to receive about the same salary to go to an FBS School.
This shows the potential challenge here. Most FCS coaches would eagerly take a job at Bowling Green. This is a place where a good coach can build a winner.
The thing is, James Madison is one of the strongest FCS programs out there. My impression is that JMU is open to moving up to the MAC or another FBS conference if an opportunity ever emerges. The JMU stadium is nice and would fit right in with our conference, so it does not surprise me that JMU is already paying near MAC-level money to its head football coach.

What a crazy situation.
He should have never been brought back to begin with. Thousands of students protested. McNair family and attorney spoke out. Even the Governor of Maryland was disappointed on his reinstatement. The entire Board of Regents needs to go. They informed the president of Maryland University that if he wasn't reinstated he would have been fired yesterday himself. That in itself is completely messed up. I don't want Durkin anywhere near BG.

A good FCS coach might be just what we need but the Withers example is terrifying: major college recruiting experience, head coaching success and yet completely unable to break through at Texas State.
Chuck Martin at Miami is another cautionary tale: highly successful D-II head coach, offensive coordinator at Notre Dame and he can't win at Miami in Year 5. The main reason I don't like Mike Elston is because of all the Brian Kelly and/or ND assistants that have failed as head coaches, with Jeff Quinn, Charley Molnar, Mike Sanford among them.
It's almost less about resume and more about finding the right person a la Urban Meyer. Kerry Coombs is still my number 1 candidate followed by Zach Azzanni and Brady Hoke, who Moose hired at San Diego State and was in play for the UT job last year.
You would think they would've sampled the court of popular opinion before reinstating him but guess not. This isn't your typical recruitment violation, someone died

As it was reported and I mentioned the president of the University had to reinstate him yesterday or he would have been walked out and fired. Personally if I were the president I would quit because he is stepping down in June anyways.

Doubtful on that one. The Mike London tenure at UVA serves as a warning for FCS to major jumps. For every Jim Tressel there are several Mike Londons. Too big of a jump to expect success. Climb the ladder, not pole vault to the roof.
MarkL has spoken.
You may all now return to your daily lives.
Durkin never should have been dismissed long ago. He hired Court as strength and CONDITIONING coach. During conditioning drills a kid died. I don't care if they were following protocols in place in 99% of the training programs in college athletics. You make your money as a certified professional (in just about any job I've had...including very briefly as a trainer) you make your money because you can recognize and deal with the 1% that falls outside of your norms.
That some people are worried about the optics of firing these guys when someone's son is dead is galling
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

Yeah the jump from FCS to P5 is enormous, I highly doubt Maryland chooses that route.
