A lot of good posts. As far as I am (was) concerned, here is kinda how it worked out. I was recommended by the, then "advisor to SICSIC" who shall remain nameless.
This recommendation came as a result of both my involvement in the greek system at BG as well as time I had spent with this gentleman at church. (you see.....God does work in mysterious ways.) I received a phone call one evening and was told to go to a certain location, by myself, and wait for further instruction. Imagine what was going through my mind? I had no clue, hadn't heard that much about SICSIC, and had visions of meeting someone like David Berkowitz. 
Got there, waited about 5 minutes, was approached from all angles by 6 masked, rather large individuals, blindfolded, thrown in the backseat of a 72 station wagon, taken to their secret hideout and the rest is history!! A time in my life I will never forget and an honor that I am proud to live with for the remainder of my time on this earth.
As far as academics were concerned, I found other ways to damage my intellectual advancement.
Can't blame my association w/SICSIC for my poor GPA. Why do you think I'm in sales?
