A difference? Yeah. Maybe not changing outcomes, but competing on a different level. Just having guys lined up in the right positions. Maybe making a play ever now and then. I realize the talents not there for any consistency. If you have D1 recruits and still finish dead last in almost all defensive categories among all of college football, that's unacceptable. Sorry.Tony4BG wrote:Rollo83 wrote:With all due respect, what has Pelini done to even warrant considerations for the job? The defense has regressed once again this year in my opinion. I know we had a host of defections and injuries on that side of the ball, but the players showed no tackling ability and technique was terrible. Certainly not like a unit who's coach deserves a promotion.
In fact, I hope our new head coach brings in new life with a new defensive coordinator. There is nothing this team can do in the last two games to change my mind on this.
Time to move on Moose.
Curious, do you honestly think the best DC would have made a difference with BG defense?
I’m hoping BG makes best hire they can!
If 2nd half performance continues next two games, he deserves an interview.
Potential replacement?

Not dead last, but BGSU now ranks 129th out of 130 FBS schools in rushing defense, and 114th (out of 130) in total defense. That's just about as bad as it can get. Does it really have to be DEAD LAST for you to be disgusted?
I've said this before, and I will say it again: if the right hire is made (and please, no Pellini), he'll bring in a DC who will have BG fielding a decent defense within two years, using many of the same players now on the team. Good coaching makes that much of a difference.

Not sure where you found your stats but understand.
I looked on NCAA site.
Total Defense - 116
Rushing Defense - 128
Passing Efficiency Defense - 105
Passing Yds Allowed - 8
Very surprising to me especially passing yds allowed.

When teams can run the ball down your throat, no need to throw it. That 8th ranking is very deceiving.Tony4BG wrote:Not sure where you found your stats but understand.

Very true especially Miami, GT, UT, WMU and Ohio stretch of games.
Re: Potential replacement?
We were dead last in rush defense for a while. That honor now belongs to Connecticut, who has perhaps a historically bad defense.
If you're considering Pelini, here are the question to ask. Now that it is his team, has the level of play increased? Specifically the defense as that is his group. Improvements reflect upon Pelini's leadership.
And is said improvement enough to warrant the job?

Re: Potential replacement?
We've given up 148.5 yards per game over the course of the last 2 games, which is half of what we have given up on average for the season, and 296 per game.
Just 72 yards given up on the ground last time we played.
Not saying anything, just presenting a fact.

Hoke could've got Shane Morris severely injured by running him out there with a concussion he had suffered a few plays earlier during his final season at Michigan. That typified the kind of utter confusion that Michigan operated under during his final year there
The Kehres hire would be brilliant...he's a guy who's proven he can win football games in front of crowds of 2-3 thousand people.

It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
Re: Potential replacement?
Kehres would be a phenomenal hire, no doubt. I just don't know if we can lure him away from that powerhouse at Mount Union that he built with his father, who is now their AD.

That's definitely a factor in this ranking, but let's not sell ourselves short, either. For whatever reason, Maryland was unable to throw the ball on us. They spent more than a half trying, and only took control of the game when they gave up on that strategy and decided to keep it on the ground.jpfalcon09 wrote:When teams can run the ball down your throat, no need to throw it. Re: Potential replacement?
Agreed, albeit it's a small sample size. I think BG has held up well this year in pass coverage which is a credit to the DBs. Definitely the strength of the defense, which to me shows if you're able to bulk up and get the depth back to where it needs to be, there's no reason it can't be successful again.Schadenfreude wrote:That's definitely a factor in this ranking, but let's not sell ourselves short, either. Re: Potential replacement?
Hoke's name is being thrown around because of proxy of Moose at SDSU. He's currently in the NFL right now and I think he'd be foolish to give that up for a head coaching position at a mid-major. I think you'd have to throw a lot of cash at Kehres to pry him away from Mount Union. He has ultimate job security there and that is worth more than gold in collegiate athletics. If Moose can pull that off there's no doubt in my mind BG would accelerate their rebuild.Flipper wrote:Hoke could've got Shane Morris severely injured by running him out there with a concussion he had suffered a few plays earlier during his final season at Michigan.
