Re: Potential replacement?
Your points are well taken BUT nearly all DB’s this year are Sr’s or RS sr’s. Some underclassmen are getting some time lately, which is critical.

Re: Potential replacement?
Defense has been abysmal. No argument here. But when someone says they are not even considering someone because their defense is dead last in almost all defensive stats in the country, they really should be dead last in more than exactly zero actual defensive stats across the country.Falconwriter wrote:Roll Along! wrote:Rollo83 wrote:Tony4BG wrote:Rollo83 wrote:With all due respect, what has Pelini done to even warrant considerations for the job? The defense has regressed once again this year in my opinion. I know we had a host of defections and injuries on that side of the ball, but the players showed no tackling ability and technique was terrible. Certainly not like a unit who's coach deserves a promotion.
In fact, I hope our new head coach brings in new life with a new defensive coordinator. There is nothing this team can do in the last two games to change my mind on this.
Time to move on Moose.
Curious, do you honestly think the best DC would have made a difference with BG defense?
I’m hoping BG makes best hire they can!
If 2nd half performance continues next two games, he deserves an interview.
Not dead last, but BGSU now ranks 129th out of 130 FBS schools in rushing defense, and 114th (out of 130) in total defense. That's just about as bad as it can get. Does it really have to be DEAD LAST for you to be disgusted?
I've said this before, and I will say it again: if the right hire is made (and please, no Pellini), he'll bring in a DC who will have BG fielding a decent defense within two years, using many of the same players now on the team. Good coaching makes that much of a difference.
A difference? Yeah. Maybe not changing outcomes, but competing on a different level. Just having guys lined up in the right positions. Maybe making a play ever now and then. I realize the talents not there for any consistency. If you have D1 recruits and still finish dead last in almost all defensive categories among all of college football, that's unacceptable. Sorry.

This young man thinks it's Carl's job.... He thinks that for a reason, I suppose...

Interesting. In my mind, if Carl was the man then the interim tag would have been removed already. Don't see the point in waiting any longer than you have to.Flipper wrote:This young man thinks it's Carl's job.... He thinks that for a reason, I suppose...

I will say that I noticed that his presser yesterday on YouTube listed him as "Coach Pelini" instead of "Interim Coach Pelini" for the first time.

Re: Potential replacement?
The defense has been remarkably better these past two weeks. However we just played the worst two teams on our schedule, and the schedule includes an FCS team. I need to see the final two to evaluate if the defense and overall team have improved playing for a different coach.
So far I think yes they have improved. Under Jinks, we would have lost to Ohio in a blowout. We would have lost to Kent State because unlike the previous two meetings, Kent no longer has a coach as clueless as we had. And I think we would have lost to CMU, perhaps badly.
Does all that warrant handing the keys to Pelini? I need to see more to determine.

Seeing what seems to be an uptick in BG offers on Twitter the past week or so...if that means anything

Re: Potential replacement?
I don't think that means anything. The current staff should still be recruiting. It keeps the cupboard stocked. And selfishly for all the coaches, if they are elsewhere next year, they can try to poach recruits into following the coach rather than the program. So I wouldn't read too much into it.Flipper wrote:Seeing what seems to be an uptick in BG offers on Twitter the past week or so...if that means anything

Re: Potential replacement?
I'm not sure I agree with that...an interim coach would definitely be working to keep the kids who have verballed in line...but an offer made by the old regime is almost always honored by the next coach. Would an interim coach really tie the next guy's hands like that?

Re: Potential replacement?
Exactly what I'm thinking. Yes, defense has looked better, but it's been against 2 teams that had a combined 0 wins against FBS opponents. Hard to draw any conclusions from that. Akron is a little more of a test but Buffalo will be a much tougher offense to deal with. I'll be curious to see how hard the defense, and the team in general, plays on a what'll be a cold day and facing a superior team. Would be easy to pack it in early. Wondering if Pelini can get them motivated to compete hard.MarkL wrote:The defense has been remarkably better these past two weeks. Agree with the first part. Second part, not so much. If you're recruiting kids with the intention of flipping them if you land somewhere else, you're severely damaging your reputation and the reputation of the school that hired you.MarkL wrote:I don't think that means anything. I'll say this much. I don't doubt how much Carl loves BGSU. It's easy to root for him. It was also easy to root for Jinks too when you took away the on-field performance. He checks off some of the things the program needs (experience, familiarity with Ohio) but his track record at FAU is a huge red flag to me, and I'm not talking about the off the field stuff. If he was the choice though I think the university would have already announced it.

Seriously? The fact they were 129th out of 130th changes your opinion?Roll Along! wrote:Defense has been abysmal. No argument here. Re: Potential replacement?
It doesn't change my opinion. But I'm not the one who said that nothing this team does over the final two games could make you change your mind, which was heavily influenced by the fact that we rank dead last in almost EVERY defensive stat in the country. Which flat out isn't true. So maybe you should reconsider.Rollo83 wrote:Seriously? The fact they were 129th out of 130th changes your opinion?Roll Along! wrote:Defense has been abysmal. Re: Potential replacement?
It could be that the administration is genuinely comfortable with advancing Carl Pelini to head coach but also wants to keep options open. Job hunters keep their options open, no reason employers can't do the same.Schadenfreude wrote:I'm not so sure.jpfalcon09 wrote:If he was the choice though I think the university would have already announced it.
