If you are the AD at ANY school in our situation, you’re gonna keep all options open. We obviously don’t know what choices are or will be available, so giving Carl the job now would not be the best move IMO.MarkL wrote:It could be that the administration is genuinely comfortable with advancing Carl Pelini to head coach but also wants to keep options open. Not when the lifeblood of your program is recruiting. Kids want to know who they'll be playing for. If you're going to hire Carl, make the announcement now, and allow him to put a staff in place to recruit.MarkL wrote:It could be that the administration is genuinely comfortable with advancing Carl Pelini to head coach but also wants to keep options open. Those who can't do, teach. Those who can't teach, teach PE.
Re: Potential replacement?
Playing some devil's advocate here. One hodgepodge recruiting class is worth the coach you want. Clawson's first class was a salvage job as half of Brandon's recruits bailed for other MAC programs. He still hauled a good class, including Chris Jones. But the class was clearly a transition class.daspollak wrote:Not when the lifeblood of your program is recruiting. So if the administration is not completely sold on Carl and wants to look, go for it. Interview around. Even if they decide on him in the end of the day, it is worth it for the opportunity to interview other candidates to confirm he is the right guy.

Re: Potential replacement?
Why fire Jinks mid season if you weren't interested in seeing if Pelini could do the job? I would rather have the energy an outside candidate would bring, and I am very much still not going to pay attention if they keep Pelini, but I am likely only slightly paying attention anyway.
Re: Potential replacement?
I’m not going to say anything more on this subject other than this, as I think this is one of the dumbest discussions we have ever had on this board. I love how you all played the moral card on Jans, and how he’s such a bad person and coach because he got drunk and patted a girl on the butt. Yet your all for hiring a coach who just a couple years back was accused of smoking the ganja and sniffing some white powder, along with other problems, while he was the head coach at FIU.
I don’t think Moose is an idiot, so I am 100% certain that Pelini will not be the next head coach of BGSU’s Football Program. You don’t fire the head coach of a terrible team to hire the defensive coordinator of that same terrible team. Just let is go, enjoy the last couple games, and let’s look forward to getting a QUALIFIED head coach in here to get this program turned around.

Re: Potential replacement?
In what world would you fire Mike Jinks to hire Carl Pelini? That’s laugh out loud ridiculous. It’s great to hear he is recruiting, and fantastic that he has kept it on the tracks, but he will not and should not be the next head coach. Central Michigan is bad. Central Michigan is awful. The Akron qb BG is likely to face Saturday is bad. Carl Pelini is not the next coach.

I don't know if the smart hire is Carl...I just think there's a good chance it will be Carl.
Love to see an experienced HC with some youth from a lower level...Kehres or someone like that. I just think they're going to hire Carl.
Don't see a moral equivalence of being accused of using drugs and committing an act that people have been charged with sexual assault for committing...but that's a pointless road to go down

Re: Potential replacement?
Well, it certainly helped calm people down about the direction the program is headed. Sure, Pelini and other coaches have to work harder now to cover for the vacancy, but I doubt Pelini is complaining about it. For him, it's an opportunity. Making the decision a few weeks early didn't cost the university anything that I can see.Globetrotter wrote:Why fire Jinks mid season if you weren't interested in seeing if Pelini could do the job?

I understand the drug charges are questionable. I also know Moose will look at that with all the seriousness it deserves.

Our AD will do his due diligence in vetting ALL candidates. I have faith in that.

Re: Potential replacement?
Ok. I got it. Because Jans was caught on video and seen in public being drunk and patting a girl on the butt (I refuse to call it sexual assault until information comes out that it was unwanted – for all I know, it was meaningless flirting), that’s so much worse than a guy who was accused of doing major drugs in his last head coaching position, just a few years back. Let’s run the first guy out of town and give that second guy the most lucrative job at the university! So hypocritical. Glad you cleared that up.MarkL wrote:In public. Ever made a bad choice at work? Should it cost you just your job, or your entire career? Some people deserve/earn a second chance. Short leash.CrazyFan wrote:

Honestly when your career is molding young men and your mistake is allegedly partaking in the very illegal drugs that have taken down so many young football players? I'd say it would end your career in any position I have a hiring say in. If somebody else wants to give you a second chance so be it, I wouldn't be the one to give you that chance.pdt1081 wrote:Ever made a bad choice at work? Afaic pelini doesn't even deserve an interview for the position, let alone serious consideration.
Re: Potential replacement?
From everything I've read about that situation, Pelini was more or less cleared of wrongdoing in that situation.
