BG v Detroit
Detroit has a guy, A freshman averaging 31 ppg. Their coach is Mike Davis of Indiana fame. The freshman is his kid. A Decommit from Houston.
Re: BG v Detroit
And that coach's kid is already lighting us up.
And they apparently love to play zone. I'm just listening on the radio but to hear Todd tell it we are exhibiting our usual cluelessness against the zone.
Down 9 about 6 mins into the game.

It's really painful to hear Todd continually ripping on our zone offense. Seriously, it's not curing cancer how have we never been able to figure out what to do against a zone?
Down 28-18 with 6 to go in the half.

Play Matiss. Can’t be worse.
Re: BG v Detroit
This isn't fun to listen to, but it's not surprising. It's basically a road game and their best player, who is the #2 scorer in the country, just keeps making threes. Not really much we can do about it.
He had 42 last night.
HALFTIME: Detroit 46, BG 27

46-27 at the half.
Detroit is shooting out of their minds behind the arc. Antoine Davis has like 5 or 6 threes himself. We probably should try to defend him on the perimeter rather than just bank on him getting cold considering he made 10 of them on 14 attempts last night. He might just be really good.
Todd pretty much lamenting every possession that we look clueless against the zone. Lazy passes, bad hands when we do get the ball inside, no outside shooting.
Detroit is a lot closer to the level of competition we'll see in the MAC than Hampton or NCCU are. We have to find a way to compete with this type of team. And you know EMU, if nobody else, will be throwing that zone at us all game long...it might be a good idea to start practicing offense against it.

Interesting thought to maybe bring your best shooter into the game against a team playing nothing but zone? Nah...couldn't possibly work.Globetrotter wrote:Play Matiss. Can’t be worse.
Could he POSSIBLY get beaten any worse on defense than what we've seen? We just gave up 46 points on like a billion 3s...it can not really get that much worse.

Re: BG v Detroit
Who is our best defender. Put him on Davis. Problem solved.

Yup.Globetrotter wrote:If you can’t play him this game you can’t play him.
We do have a history of giving scholarships to kids that you can't play though. I'm sure he's not all the way back from the injury, but if he was healthy enough to play in your preseason stuff he's healthy enough to play some minutes now. And he's not gonna get another redshirt, so you're not saving him for that either.
Maybe he just cannot play, he was awful defensively in the game he did play, but dammit why do we keep giving guys like that scholarships then?
We don't use all of our scholarships, we have one big that we're afraid to put on the floor unless it's garbage time, and we can't put our best shooter on the floor either?
Re: BG v Detroit
It's probably Turner. Lillard can play some defense as well, and his length may help against Davis. Just get up in his face and make him put the ball on the deck.Globetrotter wrote:Who is our best defender. Put him on Davis. Problem solved.

A starting five of all upperclassmen can’t beat a zone
Re: BG v Detroit
We're poorly coached and poorly recruited.Globetrotter wrote:A starting five of all upperclassmen can’t beat a zone
We don't have any guards we can count on to consistently shoot from beyond the arc to expand that zone or force them out of it.
We don't have any gaurds we can count on to make the first pass into the teeth of the zone to get it moving around.
I only listened on the radio last night, but I can be pretty certain of what it looked like since we've all seen it dozens of times over the years. They sit down in their zone, inside the arc, while our guys pass the ball around the perimeter until somebody decides to either jack up a deep 3 or tries to dribble drive through the zone as if they're not there.
This is what happens when you don't have a real offense, a real PG, or any real shooters. This team only puts up points when its individual players can win one on one matchups against the opposition. It's bad basketball, but it's what we've grown accustomed to.
