BG v Detroit
Re: BG v Detroit
Let’s call those two nights what they really were. Reality. Those were all teams BG should have beat. Instead, it took coming back from double digits to beat Hampton on a neutral court. I do enjoy the person running the BGSU Basketball twitter account who always points out the other team seems to shoot better than normal from 3pt range against BG. He/she acts like it’s bad luck. No it’s bad defense. Another year, same story. Nothing changed so why would we expect the results and inconsistency to change.

Right now, IMO, we look like a worse team than we were last year. Caldwell had flaws but he was more of a true point than Frye is. We actually miss Fox's shooting. None of our returning players look like they've made any massive leaps of improvement either.
I too get a kick out of that twitter account. I have to fight the urge to respond, knowing that it's just a University mouthpiece forced to take the optimistic view. It's not a coincidence teams shoot better from beyond the arc against us, nor is it a coincidence that we will get outscored beyond the arc in nearly every game. We don't have the size/athleticism to play defense on good teams and we don't have anybody to actually shoot the damned ball.
Re: BG v Detroit
The roster makes no sense. Why have 3 one or zero dimensional centers in today’s basketball? All of the guards are undersized especially without any shooters. Even in the win against Hampton, Frye was on bench for important stretches. That speaks volumes. And I’ll never understand how Lillard was his absolute best as a freshman and now a 5pt a game player.

Twitter doesn't provide enough space for everything that you have to say, Hammb.hammb wrote:Yep.guest44 wrote:Let’s call those two nights what they really were. Reality. It's actually fairly easy to understand; Michael Huger and staff are terrible coaches.guest44 wrote:And I’ll never understand how Lillard was his absolute best as a freshman and now a 5pt a game player.

I've been bitching about the roster construction all offseason. It makes zero sense at all.guest44 wrote:The roster makes no sense. Why have 3 one or zero dimensional centers in today’s basketball? We continue to recruit way too many undersized guards, yet in giving up size we're not getting elite quicks/handles, shooters, or passers. So we've got a roster full of guards that cannot guard the perimeter yet don't make up for it with elite traits that you should get by sacrificing size. In short, we have a lot of guys that are fringe D1 players.
Then we have 3 true post bigs. You cannot possibly ever play more than 1 of them at a time, and in reality at least 1 (if not 2) of those guys doesn't deserve to see the court at all. The 1 that can play puts up great numbers in the traditional sense, but anybody who watches modern basketball realizes that dumping the ball into the post for a true 5 to get 15 & 10 every night is no way to build a team.
Finally we have guys like Uju & Sierra who look like nothing ahtletes but also cannot shoot. Matiss who may be able to shoot but looks like such an awful athlete you cannot hide him on defense.
I have no idea what the heck we're trying to accomplish with this roster. We don't use our scholarships, we have too many bigs. We don't have a true PG, we don't have dependable shooters, and we don't have enough long athletes to adequately defend the perimeter. I, too, question our staff's ability to "coach up" or get enough from the talent we do recruit, but I have much larger questions about how they put together the roster. It's like they haven't watched a basketball game in the last 15 years.
