Absolutely. Clawson never compromised on discipline and won when he had the right talent in place, a la Chris Jones, BooBoo Gates, Matty J, Travis Greene, Dieter, etc... That can be done again. Babers capitalized purely on the talent left over and let the discipline lapse which left his successor in a hole. Jinks was bringing in talent but had an inferior, inexperienced staff and couldn't develop or retain them at an adequate level.

Bring in Top 3 recruiting classes, keep' em, develop 'em, give them structure and surround them with coaches with legitimate Division I experience. That's the formula and Polian can do that. (Also, an offense that can function in freezing temperatures in November).

Dave Clawson ran a pretty standard run of the mill offense here and he did well because he was an extremely organized , disciplined HC who recruited well. Polian seems to offer the same skill set.
Certainly could. Hopefully he has some good coordinators in mind. Nothing wrong with a HC that is the CEO type, but it does make him reliant on the coordinators. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it is a thing.

The difference is Clawson had proven that skillset at multiple stops at the lower level. Polian's only experience showing off that skillset is at a much more difficult place than Clawson's previous experiences, but was also far less successful.

I'm most intrigued by his ability to recruit. And working at ND he's certainly been in our area a bunch.

Nevada under Ault ran the pistol. Polian worked with both the pistol and the shotgun during his time.
Some thoughts about the pistol offense at BG. It would well suit both Doege and Loy.
Doege is of course as accurate as you can hope for and good throwing on the move. The pistol allows for QB rollouts. Kaepernick made a killing off these types of plays at Nevada.
And speaking of Kaepernick. Big bodied QB. Huge arm. Athletic, always a threat to run. I could see Loy thriving in such an offense.
And in Polian's run at Nevada, the running backs took off in a big way. We probably have the MAC's best and deepest set of backs in 2019. As long as the line is there, we could have a great running game.
Overall, I think we could be well suited to run the pistol. It has worked well for Ohio. It would be fun to see it in BG.

Polian kept the pistol for continuity purposes to ease the transition from Ault to himself. Not so sure he would employ the same at BG. Guess that would be a big question mark if he gets the job.

The consensus I've read from Notre Dame supporters is that Polian has done a very good job as ND's recruiting coordinator, but most see him average as best in his current role with special teams and would be happy to see him leave the staff.

He coached with recently fired coaches David Beaty and Kliff Kinsbury at AnM in 2012. I imagine Kinsbury will get a high profile OC position. Beaty may be an option at OC. A real option as well is Matt Wallerstedt who has a ton of DC experience but is now a quality control assistant at UTEP. He was LBs coach at AnM in 2012

I see both sides of the discussion. I'd prefer to see what other candidates are interested before taking a chance on Polian. Moose has a BiG decision on his hands.

I'm only going to wade into this discussion to say two things:

I very much want a coach who can be offensive-minded and understands that the world of football (at all levels) is now all about offenses, and those that spread the field and take advantage of match ups with the defense. Now, having said that, I will not get myself all caught up in an all or nothing view based on that. Let's be honest: the last football hire was made strictly on the basis of bringing in someone believed to have been the perfect hire for the type of offensive talent BG had, and had success with for a couple years. We all know how that worked out...

Knowing nothing about Polian, I can't really comment on him specifically. I can say this: it will be far, far easier to recruit talent to BG than it would have been to get talent to Nevada. The primary reason is simple: the talent within a day's drive of BGSU is far more plentiful than it would have been in Nevada.

My final point (I guess there were 3 after all) is that you probably want to bring in someone who has been able to create a culture of winning, or been a strong part of a culture of winning. Changing a losing culture in a lockerroom is just as important as who you bring in to coach and play; and it's obviously all intertwined.

And Tennessee fans couldn't wait to run Clawson out of town.

If Notre Dame won the national championship by 20 there'd be a large segment of their fan base bitching they didn't win by 30.
