Scot Loeffler
Re: Scot Loeffler
I know everyone has been dying to hear CrazyFan’s opinion, so here it is:
I believe this is a middle of the road hire. Safe hire, but I don’t believe the ceiling is that high. I am also disappointed that we had at least a month head start and this is who we came up with. I don’t think there were many people beating down Loeffler’s door to interview him for their head coaching positions either. I don’t believe this hire will put us at the top of the MAC and can see a good amount of .500 seasons in our future. I definitely don’t see the type of success that Clawson (later years) and Babers had. We’ll stick around, we’ll win 4-5 games a year in the MAC and be better than we have been with the out of conference opponents, but when all is said and done, I don’t see us pulling off a couple MAC Championships down the line like we would hope and expect. But I’ll give him a chance and see who he brings in to be on his staff. We’ll know in the first couple games of 2019 whether he’s going to be good or not. Anything is better than that unqualified clown we had running the program the last 3 years.

Nobody was beating anyone's door down for this job. It's not like BG had their pick of who they wanted to hire. Search firms put out feelers to agents to gauge their client's interest and that list is delivered to the AD. He reviews qualifications and decides who to interview. The confirmed interviewees were Pelini, Polian, Stud, and Loeffler. Tells me there wasn't much interest and Loeffler is the best choice out of the bunch. Beggars can't be choosers.CrazyFan wrote:I know everyone has been dying to hear CrazyFan’s opinion, so here it is:

Trying to peg Loeffler's career track before he even starts here is a fool's errand...so...carry on, Crazyfan

Seriously...this. Also, as noted, I do not believe there was a huge wave of interest in this job, either. That limits what you are able to do. We have to remember where we are and who we've been. It's not like we're Northern Illinois and a perennial MAC contender -- and we aren't a school like Toledo with deep pockets to pay a coach more. Those things make this job far less appealing than we'd like to believe.Flipper wrote:Trying to peg Loeffler's career track before he even starts here is a fool's errand...so...carry on, Crazyfan
Let's give the guy a chance to assemble a staff and so some recruiting, and then we can start picking him apart, bone by bone.

Urban Meyer has said he was really fired up about the chance to coach at Bowling Green because he knew, based on reading the media guide, that this was a place that a good coach can win.Falconwriter wrote: Seriously...this. That hasn't changed. While the program is down right now, it remains a good opportunity for those smart enough to see what can be achieved here.
Re: Scot Loeffler
I think a lot more people were interested than you guys think, but the ultimate goal here was to go with a safe hire that could start here now. My guess is that Moose gave directions to the search firm that he wanted an experienced P5 coordinator or assistant coach, and the firm probably did the first 20 phone screens and provided a few finalists. Pelini was an automatic candidate based on proximity.
I don't know exactly how search firms work with coaching hires, but I've worked with them on other occasions at universities and this is typically how it goes.

Coach Clawson had a horrible one year at TN as OC....he turned out ok.guest44 wrote:Fair enough. However, he was part of the 0-16 Lions if I’m not mistaken, and the fired Auburn staff as well.

Actually, the landscape has changed significantly in one important way: The amount of money you have to pay coaches, alone, has changed things dramatically. It lessens the potential pool of candidates. Some 10 years ago (and more) a school like BG would have had its pick of almost any top level assistant coach from the P5 conference, and being a head coach was the path to making those multi-year, multi-million dollar contracts. That isn't the case, anymore. Now, top assistants have those contracts, and they don't have to go the head coach route to get there.Schadenfreude wrote:Urban Meyer has said he was really fired up about the chance to coach at Bowling Green because he knew, based on reading the media guide, that this was a place that a good coach can win.Falconwriter wrote: Seriously...this. Wasn't Urban a wide receiver's coach at ND? I'd argue that an coordinator from BC is a more highly regarded job than the WR role at ND.Falconwriter wrote:Actually, the landscape has changed significantly in one important way: The amount of money you have to pay coaches, alone, has changed things dramatically. I like the hire and am cautiously optimistic. Can't wait for spring ball.
And Urban was the WR coach at ND when he was hired here.

Re: Scot Loeffler
Was he on anyone elses short lists?
Re: Scot Loeffler
Urban's handprints are over this one. He said back in the Florida days how he had to move fast to hire him back then because he was in-demand at other places. He's worked for Urban's man Addazio for many years. Like others have said, he's been hired by some prominent people in the college football community and has eked out solid if not spectacular offensive production out of places that struggled to move the ball at all before he got there. BC's formula to win involved running and defense and it worked for them. Dino's involved scoring 50 while giving up 40. Clawson's was pro-style and clicked only when he had the right talent in place. Talent will make any system flourish. I do think he'll have us more ready for the November games than other coaches have had.
The head coaching role is a completely different animal, and it will be exciting to see how someone with such a sterling reputation in the business as Loeffler handles it. I think he'll bring discipline and has the connections to build a top-flight staff.
It is now time to get behind him as the rebuilding process commences.

Re: Scot Loeffler
I've got a different read on it. Every FBS job is heavily in demand and there were other candidates besides those 4: Yurchich at Oklahoma State, Alford at Ohio State and Elston at ND. Those are quality coaches and it speaks well of Loeffler that he beat them out.jpfalcon09 wrote:Nobody was beating anyone's door down for this job. Unlike last time, the AD conducted actual interviews, and multiple ones at that!

Re: Scot Loeffler
Urban was a WR Coach - we couldn’t get a P5 O or D coordinator then unless maybe from a bad program like Kansas. I’m more impressed with what I’ve read. Any leaks on the $$$ yet? Has to be close, if not over $1MM.
