I don't believe Pelini would have been retained if Loeffler felt there was any risk whatsoever. I have to imagine they had a lengthy meeting where they talked about philosophies, roles, etc., & addressed any concerns that they both had.Globetrotter wrote:While I do believe keeping Pelini could fracture the team, I think it's worth the risk because we are already terrible.

Re: New Assistants?
This seems like a solid staff. I definitely feel more confident, overall, than I did after the last hire.
Re: New Assistants?
Add in the players wanted Pelini. It's a good move as long as everybody is on the same page.Flipper wrote:Minimal risk...Loeffler isn't stupid. I would be OK with Jimmy Williams sticking as DL coach along with Gomes and Hicks in the secondary. Pelini is comfortable with them. If Loeffler doesn't have anyone in mind (Hoke would be fun), why not keep them...

Re: New Assistants?
Going heavy on assistants with Ohio experience. Very refreshing. All those 400 high school coaches that texted Loeffler are happy with this staff.

Re: New Assistants?
I wish I felt the enthusiasm that everyone else is feeling about Pelini staying. What did he do to make the defense ANY better this season?? We beat too horrible offensive teams to end the season. Akron is 125th and C. Mich is 127. Our defense had to be one of the worst in BG history this season, finishing 124 in scoring defense giving up 40 pts/game. Last year, we were tied at 118 surrendering 38.3. Thankfully we played those two teams this year to bring the average down! Pelini did a good job managing the team under the situation, but his defense was a complete disaster.
As for the Doege's, I wish them all the best and thank them for their service here, but it's time to turn the page and give someone else a chance. I think it's safe to say when your brother is the QB coach, there is going to be some favoritism there. Morgan had an up and down career here, but he obviously was good enough to be a D1 starter as he is now at FIU. Did he get the proper coaching? In this conference, you MUST have a mobile QB that can run the ball if/when needed to be successful and Doege does not have that skill set. We have talent in the roster, so let's tap into it and reset the offense.

Re: New Assistants?
Globe...
If the players truly buy into Carl Pelini as a coach they will do exactly as he tells them to. If he is 100% on board as being the DC...then they will be 100% on board with him as the DC and Loeffler the HC.
I really don't see how this could play out any other way...

+1.Flipper wrote:That right there is a really impressive staff....
The head coach sets the general direction but it's the assistants that do most of the actual coaching. It's tough to imagine getting a better or more experienced group that has won games at a high level and bring extensive recruiting connections. He's getting the band back together from the Michigan days when they won big.
Last time we had GA's that were young, energetic and coaching their positions for the first time. It's OK (and even helpful) to have a couple of those but not the entire staff. The game planning, technique and in game adjustments should be noticeably better.

Re: New Assistants?
Meyer kept Beckman when he took over BG. Come to think of it, he kept Kyle Whittingham as DC when he took over at Utah, Charlie Strong (DC/Interim Head Coach) when he took over Florida and Luke Fickell (DC/Interim Head Coach) when he took over Ohio State.
Re: New Assistants?
The strength coach is the second most important hire after head coach and to get a guy with Kevin Tolbert's resume...well, I'm just over the moon
Put this staff in the Big 10 and people wouldn't blink.
