Given all the coaching changes and the short amount of time they had, they seemed to do a pretty good job here.

That Spiess kid looks interesting..there's video of him from FL on his twitter feed taking a feed turning and dunking a basketball off of two feet. That's pretty impressive for a 6-2, 200lb kid. Looks like he might have played a bit in MI...been set to play in Fl but then wound up in OH. We could have a real find there.

Lots of help for the defense...good to see us picking it up in NE OH and PA. That safety Gaskins LB Horne and Speiss remind me of those 200-220lb guys Clawson used to run out there (like Boo Boo) to just disrupt the hell out of an offense

The Spiess kid's career has followed his father's wayward coaching career. His dad is Tim Spiess, longtime right-hand man to NW Ohio football coach Mike Vickers (Delta, Genoa, Clay for a day, Swanton). Spiess was also briefly the head coach at Genoa. When the kid was a soph. he played for Swanton as his father was Vicker's asst. his final year at Swanton, his junior it seems he played for his father in his one year stint as the HC at New Boston Huron HS in Michigan, finally it looks like he played his senior year this past season at London HS in Ohio, I don't know if his old man coached there or not.

I wonder where they'll play him? He's a big, fast kid, he looks good running the ball in his highlights but I would predict him to be an OLB type.

After watching the NIU beatdown I don’t think recruiting mostly Ohio is going to do squat. Not impressed but I will wait and see how we do next year recruiting. Gotta go south at least some for talent.

BG has arguably had their best success from recruiting Ohio, Michigan, and PA and supplementing players from elsewhere. I think given the short time frame the staff had outside of Pelini, BG came out pretty well. We'll know 2-3 years from now whether or not. It's just like drafting in pro sports. The more picks you get, the better the chance at getting a player who will positively impact your roster. There's certainly a few of those in this class, and you have to be pleased with getting more numbers on the defensive side of the ball.

I am also puzzled by those who seem to be saying we are better off focusing our recruiting efforts in Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

Is it that people sense we haven't been trying as hard as we could in Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, and that we need to make more of an effort in our home base?

That I guess I can agree with. But if people are objecting to scouting other states, well then I don't agree.

The best programs recruit nationally. We probably don't have the resources to do that effectively (few do), but we certainly could get better by maintaining a pipeline from talent rich states like Florida. We've been getting some great talent out of Florida since Urban Meyer was here. (Omar Jacobs, for example.)

In the case of this class: I imagine what happened here is that Pelini focused on places he knew best -- Ohio and Western Pennsylvania -- and Scott Loeffler came in and helped us close some deals in Michigan.

It worked out. This is a decent class given the challenges we faced. But I would hope, a year from now, we will be pulling in talent from a broader footprint -- competing in our home base, but also keeping our eyes wide open in a few other states, Florida among them.

Agreed. In comparison, Toledo signed five kids from Florida.

Guess for this class, tough to visit kids down there.

We had three kids from coach Warner's HS in for a visit. With his connections down there...I doubt we'll abandon the state
