So apparently we're handing out our final scholarship to a guy we hired to be our grad assistant. Kid had some injuries at Findlay, but also averaged a whopping 3.8 career ppg for Findlay. Couldn't shoot from 3, and his best year he averaged 4.7 points. I'm sure this is the move that puts us over the top!
And this will really get the excitement flowing for "Fan Appreciation Day" tomorrow at 1:00. Yep, that's right. BGSU basketball is appreciating their fans by playing a game at 1PM on a Friday afternoon when none of them can actually attend!
Don't you all feel appreciated? I'd rather have a membership to the Jelly of the Month club.

2-time captain, brings some winning experience to the playing-side of the program.
It's for the rest of the year. It's not like we could have gone out and grabbed someone else to fill the roster for the rest of the year. Better than letting it go completely unused.
FWIW, his dad is Randy Gardner, the Ohio Senator.

Re: Yet another WTF Moment...
I guess my frustration is if you're just handing the scholarship to your walk on or grad assistant (as we've done nearly every year in Huger's tenure) why can we not actually recruit a D1 athlete to take it!? Sure, he probably has some leadership qualities he can bring here. But chances are if he's on the court we're screwed even more than usual. He also is another undersized guard that can't shoot...something we're never short on.
No hate for the kid, I hope he enjoys the season, glad he got his year so he can play. But I don't see how this type of player is the best use of your resources.

.........speaking of use of your resources, how about NEW lockers for your locker room in a “new” arena!
Re: Yet another WTF Moment...
Yeah that one didn't get brought up on here, but I discussed it with some other BG fans through social media.factman wrote:.........speaking of use of your resources, how about NEW lockers for your locker room in a “new” arena!
You can stack that up as another WTF moment. Can't recruit a full roster, can't schedule a single worthwhile OOC opponent, but can afford to put brand new lockers in an arena that's not even 10 years old yet?
Re: Yet another WTF Moment...
I will say, those new lockers are probably something nice for recruiting purposes.

I was told the same thing about the Stroh in general.mbenecke wrote:I will say, those new lockers are probably something nice for recruiting purposes.

Gotta admit, when I saw this on twitter this afternoon, my first reaction was "Is this an April Fools joke?". Second reaction, oh, this is just one of those give the manager his one day on the court things. Nope, wrong in both instances.hammb wrote:https://twitter.com/Thomas_Schmeltz/sta ... 2325660672

And this is not a knock on Austin Gardner whatsoever. It's the fact that we give a scholarship to an assistant coach that is so hard to understand. I mean if he has leadership skills, you are already getting that from him as the GA. Seems like we would be better off holding open try-outs or getting someone off the football team if we are that desperate to build a roster.

Its a terrible idea not to use that scholarship correctly. That ship has sailed.
I'm fine with them getting as many bodies on the floor as possible. This is a non issue for me . Another option on the court is better than nothing.

Sure. IF you've already locked yourself in on NOT finding a legit D1 player, bring on another body, why not.Globetrotter wrote:Its a terrible idea not to use that scholarship correctly. That ship has sailed.

But my frustration lies in the fact that clearly they have no problem USING that final scholarship, why the hell couldn't they find a legit D1 player to take it? That IS the job of a coaching staff to do, afterall.
Every year since Huger has been here we fail to use all of our scholarships and give the last one out to a walkon, or now a grad assistant. It's getting real old, real fast.
Also, FWIW, I was looking at the records last night. Did anybody else realize that Huger has a whopping .350 winning percentage in MAC play compared to .430 by the great Louis Orr? These laughably bad OOC schedules have kept his overall records close to .500 but we've been effing horrible in MAC play the past 4 years. I knew it was bad, but didn't realize it was that bad.

I agree wholeheartedly. They don't have a real answer as to why they don't use all the scholarships and we don't have a media that follows the team well enough to get things clarified.hammb wrote:Sure. Re: Yet another WTF Moment...
Where does it say Gardner is on scholarship? I did not read that in the Schmeltz tweet.

Gardner is not on scholarship, but why let facts get in the way.
