Dear God...when they win it doesn't mean anything but if any of those games had been losses you'd be the first one on the board ripping them. If they win it's supposed to be meaningless but if they lose they get criticized.

BG quite literally cannot win among a certain segment of the fan base.
I'm not rising to Hammb's defense (he can easily do that himself) but you have to use a bit of perspective here. I've been following BG basketball for 47 years and have yet to be able to root for them in an NCAA tournament. Think about that...and my love for BG basketball probably isn't as deeply tethered as Hammb's is, because he grew up going to games and still goes (I only lived in BG during my time in school). So if my frustration (and yes, cynicism) is deeply ingrained by now...imagine how his is, and others with similarly long tenures without seeing even one truly outstanding season.

This team still has a chance to do something truly special, but given the decades of "PTSD" some of us have when it comes to the basketball program, it's hard to be optimistic moving forward. We've seen them tuck their tails and lose to much lesser teams too often. I dearly want them to prove everyone wrong (including a skeptical me) and win this tournament to punch their ticket...and end this horrid streak.

This team does have the potential of pulling off MAC championship in Cleveland. What bothers me is the real possibility of then being seeded 14 and being crushed in the NCAA tournament............ That is not the way to end a wonderful season, is it? ............Could the NCAA committee decide to instead give the 'automatic berth' to runner-up marquee member Buffalo; leave the winner of the MAC tourney out....and on to the NIT?

I think our seeding in the NCAA tourney should be the last of our worries. Lets get there first.

I don't care if we are a 14 seed and get crushed. It would still make this the best season in the past 50 of BG hoops. Even having to play in a play-in game would make this a better year, but god I hate those as they don't feel like the real tournament to me.

As to your other question, no the NCAA does not have that jurisdiction. Each Conference determines how they crown their conference champ, and thus who gets the automatic bid. The MAC, like every conference other than the Ivy League, gives that honor to their conference tourney champion. If we can pull off 3 magical wins next weekend we're going to the dance. Lotta work to get there though.

In reality Buffalo has probably nearly cemented an at large bid. Hard as that is to imagine for a MAC team. They're in the top 20 in kenpom, and top 10 in RPI. We've seen some MAC teams get snubbed from at large bids in years past, but I don't think any of them had nearly the resume of this year's UB team (not that it should matter, but beating Arizona last year is going to be in the memory banks as well). With that in mind I REALLY hope they lose in the MAC championship game. Hopefully to BG, but ultimately them losing to anybody is good for the conference. I really want to see us get 2 bids again.

Shows how closely I follow the Ivy League. When I was typing my post I was thinking I should look it up to see if they still used regular season champ, but didn't remember hearing about it, so went with it.

Ooops!

Did you really just complain about winning MAC tourney and making NCAA Tourney? Are we really at that point where would rather be in NIT?

I would like us to go to the NCAAs with a # 7, 8 or 9 seed, but that will not happen. If we go to the NIT we will have a chance, even though we will need to travel, but we will have a decent chance of breaking our nine game losing streak dating back 60 + years in that tournament. March sadness has prevailed with our program for some time now, but hopefully this is the year good things happen. We have some fight and we proved it as we kicked Buffalo 's ass.
Furthermore, I think the only way to achieve a decent seed coming from the MAC is to go undefeated the entire season (beating all comers including the likes of Cleveland St) and then winning the Cleveland tournament.

Might not be what you want to hear because CSU did struggle this season, but they did have a solid win at NKU recently. I also don't trust us to get an NIT bid the way they like to pick garbage P5 teams. currently we are projected right along the NIT bubble which means that we would most likely have to make MAC final to have a real shot.
