CIT or CBI
Thoughts on playing in either one of those tournaments? I say yes, use some of that Frack money and get more experience for this young team.

I think we would have made an NIT run if there weren't so many bid stealers, so we absolutely should do this.

The NIT is a massive money grab. We'll never play in an NIT tournament unless we get the automatic bid. Toledo has a much better resume than we do, and I don't think they're even guaranteed a bid this year.mbenecke wrote:I think we would have made an NIT run if there weren't so many bid stealers, so we absolutely should do this.
We simply don't have a large enough fan base or travel well enough to get NIT bids. And we won't "buy" them either.
As for the other tournaments, I just have a hard time getting into them. They're cash grabs, and I'm fine letting the guys get another game, but to me the season effectively ended last night. Obviously if we do accept a bid (and sounds like we will) I want us to win every game. There is some some value in playing more tournament basketball as well for the guys that will be returning next year. That's probably the best reason to enter one of these tournaments.

Any tournament other than the NCAA is meaningless bullshit.
If the players themselves WANT TO play in some CBITI or whatever me-too thing, then they absolutely should. Nothing to get excited about. No reason to pretend it matters. Post-season exhibition game.

Unfortunately the tournament system is a pay-to-play operation for most mid-majors. Call it an exhibition tournament or whatever you want but to put the program in position to win the automatic bid next year a bid in these lesser known tournaments is the preparation i believe the team really needs.

Re: CIT or CBI
Just out on Twitter, we have declined to play. That tells me that since we didn’t get into the NCAA or NIT it wasn’t worth it financially to play in the CIT or CBI. I honestly cannot blame them. Nobody was picking us for the two big tournaments because they didn’t want to and didn’t have to.
ROLL ALONG!!!
Re: CIT or CBI
No way this was Financial. They have the money. One could speculate that a few players had enough this season. If I were to speculate it could be a senior or two. To me this is very sad. FYI AD Moosebrugger is on the CIT committee.
Re: CIT or CBI
As I said above, we'll never make the NIT unless mandated to as the regular season MAC champ. The NCAA still at least tries to make it look like it's about creating the best field (although OSU getting in this year certainly makes one question THAT as well), but the NIT is under no such delusion. It's all about creating a tournament to get the most revenue, and sadly we just don't have the fan following to make us a desirable entrant in the NIT.
The other tournaments are just meh to most anybody. My only hope is that if the players said they wanted to keep playing they were not vetoed by the people with the checkbook. Especially in a season where we didn't bring in any premier OOC competition and I've still never heard a good explanation of how we spent the Frack money. These tournaments DO cost money, but that could have been some valuable experience for the future. If this was the team's decision though, I have no problem with it. After laying everything on the line for that ticket to the big dance, it probably would be tough to get into it for the community hoe-down.

I have a huge problem with a group of basketball players deciding they didn't want to play more basketball. That's probably an indication of why we saw the lack of effort we saw so many times.
Re: CIT or CBI
It's more likely an indication that they want this year to be remembered for a run to Cleveland, as opposed to a few relatively meaningless games in a third-tier tournament.

No one would forget the rest of the season based on these few games.mbenecke wrote:It's more likely an indication that they want this year to be remembered for a run to Cleveland, as opposed to a few relatively meaningless games in a third-tier tournament.

I think you're overthinking it. Yeah, I would watch (if possible) if we were in one of those tournaments, but with us not playing I won't even look up the field. The tournaments are meaningless. And these kids ARE still students. I don't begrudge them in the least saying they'd rather focus on school the rest of the year than participate in these tournaments after missing out.Globetrotter wrote:I have a huge problem with a group of basketball players deciding they didn't want to play more basketball. There's also the slap in the face factor. By being left out of the NIT you have basically been told the powers that be don't feel you belong in the top 100 teams of Division 1 basketball. After busting your ass all year to put together the best resume possible, that has to sting. And, no, even going out and winning one of those tournaments wouldn't make the case we belonged higher up.
I'm really indifferent on them. IF they want to play, I wouldn't stop them, but if they don't I understand completely.
