Justin Turner

Post by mbenecke »

Justin Turner has declared for the NBA draft, per his twitter page.

However, in his declaration, he made it clear that he was not signing an agent and that he was mostly using this opportunity as a chance to get feedback before he eventually goes pro in a few years. I think this is a great decision for him, and I wish him the best. We will certainly welcome him back with open arms once he goes through the process, receives his feedback, and gets back to work on his craft.

I really, really hope he's doing this to simply gather some info like Wiggins did last year, because this would be a huge mistake if he left college right now. He's a very solid player, and getting better, but he is not an NBA player right now and I really hope for his sake he doesn't have people in his ear telling him differently. I really do hope for his sake, and BG's, that he comes back because he's in line to have a monster season next year. He'd be a candidate for MAC Player of the Year and would have a much better platform to showcase his talent and improve his game than on the piddly "professional" stages he'd be on if he leaves.

Justin would be remiss in NOT taking this opportunity.

I don't believe Justin will be draft-able until he adds significant overall body strength. I DO believe we'll see him in the NBA, though! :)

This. He's just finding out how he's perceived at the next level, which should give him some very specific things to work on (in his game) this coming season. The fact of the matter is that a lot of good (not great) college players can make a decent living playing basketball overseas. But most just want to find out how they measure up against the NBA.

I'm glad the Wiggins thing last year taught us that this isn't a big deal or this would have me freaked out.

The best thing about this site is the number of people who post something with absolute certitude despite not having any clue about anything.

I don't know if this is right, but also don't know why a Wisconsin reporter would make something up about Justin Turner out of whole cloth.

I don't think Turner will leave. To sit here a month from the deadline and say anything definite is just dumb.

Flying under the radar

Looking for a “sleeper’’ in this year’s draft?

Then, you might want to keep an eye on Justin Turner, who played in relative anonymity at Bowling Green in the Mid-American Conference.

Turner, a 6-4 combo guard, is quietly piquing the curiosity of some NBA teams and is expected to declare for the draft any day now. Turner, a Detroit native, averaged 18.3 points as a red-shirt sophomore and posted 16, 20-point plus games this season, including two 30-point plus outings.

60 players get drafted every year. 15-20 are from other countries. At most 30 make a team every year. Guards making the NBA is very difficult. I wish him all the luck in the world, but I don't see it happening this offseason. I have little doubt that he should eventually be on a summer league team.

Yeah, I have no doubt that he is drawing interest. But as Globe put it here the NBA is the hardest league to crack. Only two rounds in the draft, most second rounders don't make the team, along with a lot of first rounders. I'm not too worried about Turner leaving with two years of eligibility remaining to MAYBE be a second rounder who has to develop in the G League or internationally. I'm MUCH more worried about the possibility we all know for his final year of eligibility.

The list of 66 players invited to the the NBA combine was released yesterday. As expected, Turner not one of them.

Turner has one more week until the draft deadline (May 29th) to remove his name from consideration and return to college. I really hope he does for many reasons.

I read an article on hoopsrumors.com that mentioned the Chicago Bulls bringing him in for a workout. I'm not sure if anyone else has but teams are certainly considering him.

He's still tweeting as though he's returning. My guess is that he's taking as much time to familiarize himself with NBA teams/front offices as possible.

He also posted on Instagram that he was in Philly for something at the Sixers' facility, presumably a workout.

I listened to the most recent interview with Todd Walker and Michael Huger, and Huger made it sound like unless Turner was going to be a first-round pick, he's expecting him to come back. I would be stunned if Turner was being projected as a first rounder, and that's not a knock on Turner. I would love to see Turner in the NBA one day, and he could possibly get to that point in the future. But man I am hoping like hell he returns to BG, wins MAC Player of the Year, and led this team to a damn MAC Tournament championship and NCAA Tournament already! That's something not even guys like Antonio Daneis, Anthony Stacey, Keith McLeod or Richaun Holmes could do.

If I am an NBA scout I tell him he needs to do 2 things to get to where he wants to be. 1) Shoot 3's better. 2) Show he can play PG.
