Absolutely. Clearly last year showed some recruits that we could be on the way up. Build on it and hopefully it starts to snowball into more.
Asinine that a kid who redshirted has to sit another year. Doubt that would be the case of he were transferring to Duke or Kentucky.
Re: Dylan Swingle Commits
There is no excuse and never will be an excuse for being a middling mid major program and not using all 13 scholarships ... to steal a Chris Rock line “lie to me, Jerry” and tell me like Brian said that the University can’t afford 13 scholarships but outside of the minuscule possibility of that ... it is ridiculous and borderline incompetence

Re: Dylan Swingle Commits
Sorry, but the idea that putting it back in hopes of "that perfect opportunity" coming along is just ridiculous. If the coaching staff is doing its job, then either the scholarship is available because someone left (graduated or transferred) OR it is already being used by someone as good or better than Swingle. That's how a good program operates; and that's how BGSU should always aspire to operate.FalconTurf wrote:Thank God we had enough success last year to be in position to get a highly regarded transfer.Globetrotter wrote:Thank god we waited five years for this moment.FalconTurf wrote:And if Coach had given 13 scholarships ASAP would this scholarship been available for Dylan Swingle? It would be like playing a card game, the rules say you can have 13 cards in your hand but you turn down the final card from the dealer. Grad Xfers are essentially NCAA free agency. We can find someone with a high basketball IQ who can set picks for a year and lower the team GPA at the very least.
It wasn't so long ago we literally had football players playing for us because we didn't fill out the roster. We had 1 player over 6-6. And then we have one good year and people totally forget.

With all the 13th scholarship talk, there is also the possibility that with the arrival of Swingle that Mattos, Gadsen or both could transfer. I think it is less likely if Swingle has to sit, and I think Swingle's arrival shows that they probably don't care is Gadsen leaves. We now have a roster with three traditional 5's. No one needs 3 guys who can only play one spot on the floor and only guard a post. So even though we just finally used our thirteenth scholarship I think there is a chance it might be our twelfth scholarship.

So, does Mr. Swingle sit this coming year or not? Facts only please. Opinions not needed.

Currently, he has to. But he could also apply for a waiver, and he appears to have a decent shot at winning that battle.BleedOrange wrote:So, does Mr. Swingle sit this coming year or not? Facts only please. Opinions not needed.

I lean toward FalconTurf on this.hammb wrote:I honestly think "we like to hold it back for just the right moment, example Dylan Swingle" is an answer that would piss me off more than just saying we cannot afford to pay out 13 scholarships a year.FalconTurf wrote:And if Coach had given 13 scholarships ASAP would this scholarship been available for Dylan Swingle? It's an absurd strategy. Even if it does pay off this time it's still as asinine as doubling down on a 9 with the dealer showing a 10.
It comes down to the level of talent you think you were going to get with that 13th scholarship. If the talent available with that 13th scholarship is probably going to be riding the end of your bench, why not hang onto it and keep it handy for when an opportunity to get a blue chipper finally emerges?
The cost, I guess, is the opportunity to roll the dice and see if a lightly-heralded player awarded that 13th scholarship can emerge into a force in the MAC. I guess there's always a chance. But if our coach thinks this chance is really low, I can see why he'd want to keep the scholarship in his pocket.

I agree with Hammb. I think the success we had last year is why this guy is coming to BGSU.hammb wrote:.FalconTurf wrote:Thank God we had enough success last year to be in position to get a highly regarded transfer.Globetrotter wrote:Thank god we waited five years for this moment.FalconTurf wrote:And if Coach had given 13 scholarships ASAP would this scholarship been available for Dylan Swingle? We have offered that 13th scholarship in previous years but the players had options available and elected to go elsewhere. This year, we offered the scholarship and the student wanted to come to BGSU.
It's not that we weren't offering the scholarship, but we had not given them a reason for selecting us. This past year, our play gave Dylan Swingle a reason to select us.

Yes, Globe, Option and others have made great points. If they were turning down offers before we either need to offer different people, more people or recruit harder.Falconwriter wrote: If the coaching staff is doing its job, then either the scholarship is available because someone left (graduated or transferred) OR it is already being used by someone as good or better than Swingle. Nevertheless, halle-freakin-lujah! First step: use all 13 scholarships, next step: MAC championship!
Buffalo lost their coach and top recruiter, Ohio fired Better Call Saul prematurely...the league is for the taking.

I think you're right. I mean they aren't weirdly short but they definitely aren't long. Might have something to do with his torso size too. I'd like to see a video of him right now as opposed to two years ago.Flipper wrote:Is it me...or do his arms look a little short?
Re: Dylan Swingle Commits
From a very good source (within the program) a waiver application for Dylan Swingle to be eligible this year is being explored. This will be huge if they can get him eligible this year. Keep your fingers crossed.

Re: Dylan Swingle Commits
I'd say he has a decent shot. A kid shouldn't have to sit for two years. The article on his transfer suggested that Dambrot pushed him out. If that's true, and he was already redshirted I think that would absolutely qualify as a hardship. Tate Martell was granted a hardship waiver and his only hardship was having to compete for playing time.OSUFALCON wrote:From a very good source (within the program) a waiver application for Dylan Swingle to be eligible this year is being explored.
