Re: Transfer Watch
Under Brandon, we lost scholarships due to poor APR scores...are we in that boat again?

Re: Transfer Watch
No. That would be Fred Thompson, the former men's soccer head coach. Went winless in MAC play at least once. The program has completely turned around since.Flipper wrote:Is Mike Jinks the worst hire in the history of BGSU sports?
But of the major sports ... yes, at least since I've been following. Far worse than Orr. Orr had a championship and winning seasons. Jinks had neither. And Jinks stepped into a better situation.
But as bouncebacks in Soccer and Hockey have proven, the right coach can right the ship.

Re: Transfer Watch
So you're automatically assuming leaving BG is the right choice for his future and no longer is an adequate situation for him because a coach left. (God forbid a coach leaves at his next school; coaches never change jobs in college football, do they?) What's so bad about BG? The lack of MAC championships, that cloying small-town community environment, that weak non-conference schedule that includes Notre Dame and Michigan, that lack of opportunity to be noticed by NFL scouts and get drafted...just ask Scott Miller!hammb wrote:No god dammit. That kid made a choice when he was 18 and he must stick it out until he's 22. Screw him for leaving our team and wanting to find a better situation for himself. I don't care that I know absolutely NOTHING about the reasons for his decision, and I don't care about those reasons. I don't even care that the entire coaching staff that recruited him to be here is now gone. He made a commitment, and dammit he owes it to all of us to do what is best for BG football. He can worry about his own life and future after we've used up his eligibility!Flipper wrote:The team philosophy he was recruited under is no longer here... If you aren't happy, go somewhere else.
And 18 years olds are NEVER impulsive, are they? They ALWAYS make the most logical and rational decisions for both their short and long term future. We should do everything possible to enable this and make it easier for them to do. Screw that school that called him every day for 3 years, welcomed him into their program, gave him playing time as a freshman and stupidly expected him to be a key part of their future. They aren't in the Power 5 so they don't matter.
(BTW, beating teams with $80 million dollar budgets as you expect us to do with our $28 million dollar budget will be slightly harder to do with the free agency model you endorse. Keep cheering as players walk out the door...that will work out great.)

Re: Transfer Watch
It's completely asinine to judge the decisions others make re their personal situation when you have NONE of the pertinent facts at your disposal. He joined the football team...not the mafia. You are allowed to move along from BGSU without getting killed or going into witness protection.

Re: Transfer Watch
Brandon Peters is transferring from Michigan. He was a freshman in 2017 and was thrown to the wolves behind an awful offensive line and looked okay. I'd have to think Loeffler and Harbaugh talk. I'd take him.

Doesn't sound like we have room for him...and QB is a spot I think we're at least OK at going forward this year

Re: Transfer Watch
Free agency and unfettered transferring is the death knell of what remains of Group of 5 competitiveness. There are two things going for us: the 85 scholarship limit, so teams like Ohio State don't put 250 kids on scholarship every year, and the assurance that players that sign with schools have some degree of commitment towards them and cannot easily depart based on caprice.
It's not the act of transferring itself that is disturbing, it's the completely unprecedented frequency and magnitude of it. It's asinine to think 700 transfers in Division I basketball every year is normal or healthy for the sport or the players, and that's precisely what is in store for college football with this ridiculous "portal". Adversity used to be something team sports prepared an individual to withstand and overcome. Now the slightest tinge of it sends people scurrying away to be told what they want to hear by someone else.
Keep being naive and telling yourself that each of the hundreds (and soon to be thousands) of players that transfer have perfectly fair and justified reasons for abandoning their commitments and the schools that believed in them. Keep thinking graduate transfers do it for purely academic reasons as the guidelines stipulate. Keep those thoughts in mind as unrestrained selfishness poisons and ruins the collegiate athletic system, BGSU included.

Re: Transfer Watch
No one cares about the "why" behind the decision to transfer. It's a question of fairness and the principles of freedom. Coaches can recruit kids and then leave right after signing day with no problems...athletes should have the same freedom. This is America...an ostensibly free country. You seem to favor a type of indentured servitude that puts onerous restrictions on the movements of your fellow citizens. What are you...a commie?Antimob wrote:Free agency and unfettered transferring is the death knell of what remains of Group of 5 competitiveness. Looks like BG getting grad transfer LB from BC so imagine Loeffler knows him. Davon Jones.

We're not talking about restricting freedom, we're talking about contracts with a private entity entered into willingly and voluntarily. NCAA legislation, like all legislation, is meant to encourage certain behaviors and discourage others. As an organization comprised of educational institutions, the principles of loyalty, commitment, resolve and maturity are values they ostensibly want to promote in students. Picking up your ball and leaving when something doesn't go exactly the way you want it to is the operating philosophy of children and something they want to minimize and deter, not facilitate and expand even more.
Re: Transfer Watch
It looks like he's an LB/RB, but I have to imagine he's going to be at LB here, based on need. 5-10, 235 is a solid LB size for the MAC. Welcome to the Falcons, Davon!Tony4BG wrote:Looks like BG getting grad transfer LB from BC so imagine Loeffler knows him. Davon Jones.

Re: Transfer Watch
Antimob....i think you expecting fealty rather than loyalty. Coaches walk out on kids they recruited every year. Players transfer every year...both sides of the equation know that going in
