Re: Transfer Watch
Doege's a pretty good QB, but if he doesn't want to be at BG, then I don't want him at BG.
Maybe he's just entering the transfer portal to see if there's any interest, & considering staying at BG. If so, great. If he's decided that he is absolutely, positively 100% leaving BG, so be it. He's free to do what he wants.
As for the team, we're going to be mediocre at best, whether he stays or goes. If he stays, maybe we win 3-4 games. If he goes, maybe we win 2-3 games. I hope I'm wrong.

Re: Transfer Watch
Loeffler said it was Doege #1, Loy #2 and Veasley #3. He said Loy physically looked the part of a QB (his size and frame) but has a lot to work on and that he didn't have a great spring, but that he had a good one. It was a pretty vanilla review so I'm guessing it wasn't a case of Doege being jumped by Loy at all. There was no indication whatsoever that Doege was leaving per Loeffler. Now, that said, Loeffler might have known about it and just not have revealed it. Or, maybe he simply didn't know and was as surprised as we are about it. The NCAA Transfer Portal was actually mentioned when they were talking about QB's but Loeffler more talked about it like he could possibly look into it to add depth, which leads me to believe Doege leaving gained a lot more traction in the last day or so.MarkL wrote:Wow. Major loss there. I had heard Grant Loy was looking very good in camp so that may be the cause.
It will be strange. The last time we had the same QB start every game for two seasons? 2011-2012 with Matt Schilz.

Re: Transfer Watch
IIRC Doege ran basically the Texas Tech offense in high school. Perhaps the transition from an offense he has known his entire football life to something else, combined with new coaches and his brother leaving was all too much change in a small window.

Re: Transfer Watch
It's certainly possible, and would lead to why I didn't think it was a good idea to not add an experienced QB (Juco or transfer) during the signing periods. And remember, had one been brought in during the signing period (like some schools do and announce) they would have been here for spring ball to learn the system. That's completely out of the equation now. It would make fall camp critical. The window is still open for a grad transfer, so I'm holding out a ray of hope for one at this point. But if one doesn't come to light, the way the QB position was handled and how it has panned out - thus far - is becoming one giant fail right out of the gate. That can be still be rectified, but the clock is ticking, fast.MarkL wrote:IIRC Doege ran basically the Texas Tech offense in high school. I don't disagree with the mindset of if a guy doesn't want to be here then say goodbye, but this avalanche of transfers nationwide is going haywire and is getting a ridiculous at this point. Prior to a couple years ago you always had some guys transfer here and there. Then two years ago things started to shift. And now, the floodwaters have come. To me it sends the message that one, you can't ever count or bank on anyone returning, and two, you're going to have to recruit positions across the board and not just positions of need.threestooges wrote:Doege's a pretty good QB, but if he doesn't want to be at BG, then I don't want him at BG.

No two ways about it. This is going to be a tough season. It can not be understated how much damage the mismanagement of the previous staff, and the AD who thought it was a good idea, did to the program and it will take many years to recover.
Still ... I'm buying my season tickets. Loeffler will get it done.

The Kingston crew took the MAC Champs and literally gutted the entire program in one hire. Thankfully, time has helped rid most of the Kingston crew, but a few still remain.

Re: Transfer Watch
Given the timing, this makes sense to me. Doege probalby at first figured: Why leave? I'm the starter, and it isn't that close. But after all that spring practice learning an entirely new offense, perhaps he decided: Nah, I don't want to put up with all this.MarkL wrote:IIRC Doege ran basically the Texas Tech offense in high school. Ex-BC QB Johnny Langan transferred to Rutgers earlier in the year.BGSU33 wrote:I'd say right now, BG beyond needs one. I wonder what Boston College's QB depth situation looks like up there?
Welcome to the new world of the transfer portal, where rosters are constantly in flux and the recruiting process never ends. Fun! After all, it's all about what's best for "kids" (aka men old enough to fight and die for the country, some of whom have kids of their own) because hopscotching around the country going from school to school is clearly, unquestionably what's always right for their future.

Re: Transfer Watch
Who are you to tell someone you've never even met what's "right for their future"?
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
Re: Transfer Watch
These guys are leaving BGSU for two reasons only. Nobody wants to play for a last place team. 2: Nobody wants to sit the bench behind a starter that cannot win. We are not winning and it will always be hard to get solid talent to come here until we start to win some football games. You have to remember most of these young men are thinking about playing at the pro level. It's hard to do that on a losing team.
Example: How many pro teams has come to BGSU pro day recently?
Don't bring up Scotty even though that is great for the BG football program.
Don't think old school, because we are long past those days.

Re: Transfer Watch
It sounds like RB Marlow may not be with the team in the fall. He started 6 games at WR last year and was the team's third leading WR. Man, the last few seasons have been pitiful on the field, but this offseason has been pretty depressing with all these defections. It seems every couple days we're losing yet another guy for whatever reason. We held some water after the coaching change but over the past several weeks there are now leaks everywhere. The phrase "reached rock bottom" has been tossed around a lot on this board the last several years, but when you combine the on-field performance coupled with all the mass defections, I think we're finally there. It's just downright depressing because in 2015 we were sitting at the top and had been rolling for several years. Now that seems like 20 years ago already.
