60 point losses, low ranked recruiting classes, inferior facilities and the best players constantly transferring...your version of BG football is where it's at.Flipper wrote:Cupcake schedules and embroidered leather chairs...the hallmarks of football legends

Is it hard to build a false dichotomy solely from strawmen?

Central has a writer who picks them to win the MAC every year.fredthefalcon wrote:Looking at the voting, I found something odd. CMU was voted last in the West and in fact had a one point lower vote total than BG. But what was really strange was that one of the 24 voters picked them to be MAC Champs.

Re: 2019 MAC Preseason Poll
I really don’t understand “low ranked recruiting class” as a measure of anything... they are ranked by some jack asses that NEVER even see the vast majority of the players. There are about 6000 FBS and FCS D1 scholarships per year. Do you really think rankings are remotely accurate after say, the top 20 teams?? Further, do they know if the kid has brains, work ethic, heart, accountability, dope issues, etc etc. Stick to wins and losses, grad rates, and if the players are good reps of the school on and off field, for your evaluation.Antimob wrote:60 point losses, low ranked recruiting classes, inferior facilities and the best players constantly transferring...your version of BG football is where it's at.Flipper wrote:Cupcake schedules and embroidered leather chairs...the hallmarks of football legends
It’s not my point of view, it’s a fact.
Re: 2019 MAC Preseason Poll
You're correct, but their evaluations are based primarily on the other offers the player has had. That is the value they have for me. Are we signing players programs comparable with ours want as well?
Re: 2019 MAC Preseason Poll
You tell me. Your fixation on chairs (aka comparable facilities with our rivals) shows how out of touch you are with respect to recruiting. We can't wait another 50 years to modernize our facilities before another Urban Meyer is forced to come in and get us up to par.Flipper wrote:Is it hard to build a false dichotomy solely from strawmen?

The Perry Field house was finished eight years before Urban Meyer arrived. Construction started on the Sebo Center did not start until several years after Meyer left. Other than that, great point.Antimob wrote: We can't wait another 50 years to modernize our facilities before another Urban Meyer is forced to come in and get us up to par.

I'm sorry, you must be new to Falcon football so let me add some context. You missed the articles in the Blade and Sentinel when Meyer was here where he showed Matt Markey & Jack Carle the plans for the Sebo Center's construction laid out on his desk and the fundraising that was taking place for it. You missed where he was banging his fist on the table imploring the administration to update facilities and an old administrator told him they didn't need that stuff to win in the 1980's. You also must have missed all the other MAC schools (Ball State, WMU, Buffalo, Toledo, Ohio, NIU, Miami) that have build indoor complexes and practice facilities since 2007 far superior to early 1990's multi-use Perry Field House and the Sebo Center meeting room.Schadenfreude wrote:The Perry Field house was finished eight years before Urban Meyer arrived. Any more questions? It's always fun dragging fans out of the stone age and into modern reality.

I've been following Falcon football since Moe Ankney was head coach.Antimob wrote:I'm sorry, you must be new to Falcon footballSchadenfreude wrote:The Perry Field house was finished eight years before Urban Meyer arrived. I do remember those articles. Did Matt Markey and Jack Carle also report that Meyer personally drew up blueprints for the Sebo Center in between his recruiting trips and working up game plans to beat Missouri and Northwestern?so let me add some context. You missed the articles in the Blade and Sentinel when Meyer was here where he showed Matt Markey & Jack Carle the plans for the Sebo Center's construction laid out on his desk and the fundraising that was taking place for it.
I'm certain the answer is no.
Meyer was here just two years, and facilities were never his core job. It may be that Meyer tried to help raise money for an end zone facility. If so, that's great. (Although I suspect part of the purpose of openly talking up an end zone facility with media was to convince potential recruits that something big was imminent even though it was actually years away.) Perhaps Meyer even helped get the ball rolling.
But he didn't do it alone. Construction didn't start on the Sebo Center until three years after Meyer left, and nothing like that gets done without significant support from the athletic director and more senior university leaders.
It seems to you are trying to turn Urban Meyer into something he wasn't. And some of your claims are just incorrect. You claim BGSU had not invested in athletic facilities in a half century before the Urban Meyer era, but this just isn't so. The Perry Fieldhouse was only seven or eight years old when Meyer got here.
That's a point of view, I guess. It's always fun dragging fans out of the stone age and into modern reality.
Re: 2019 MAC Preseason Poll
Meyer was the primary driver behind the Sebo Center. The fact it was ultimately built after he left demonstrates just how intransigent the university culture was to any type of change during that time. He saw the need for it, he spoke to the donors, he convinced people trapped in the Moe Ankney days that things had to change.
He said the locker room wasn't a place he'd let his dog inhabit at the time he arrived. That's not investing in facilities. That's what went 50 years without anyone lifting a finger to improve or fix much like Anderson Arena. Perry Field House is a multi-use facility used more by recreational sports than the football program and its construction in the early 1990's was hardly the panacea needed to catch us up to our peers in facilities.
We need to have the things our competitors have to compete or we won't compete. It's that simple.

Re: 2019 MAC Preseason Poll
Antimob wants BGSU to be all in on football. There is ZERO interest from anyone in the University community in following that course...and there shouldn't be. Athletics robs enough $$$ from students who don't give a crap about sports, we don't need to rob them more to be a part of some never ending facilities arms race. Sell the school, the community and the chance to play .....let the guys at Furniture Row sell the leather chairs

Maybe we should drop $28M and build something like this:

Given that we're never going to be that, Flipper is correct. School, community, education, opportunity to play. . .
And I'm not part of the Moe Ankney era. (Don Nehlen for me)

I can be forced (if I squint enough) to see the argument in saying, "If you're going to field a football team you should be all in."Flipper wrote:Antimob wants BGSU to be all in on football. But that logic just inevitably leads down the road of concluding that we have no business fielding D1A football at all.
There is zero financial justification for throwing tons of money at facilities and meeting rooms to MAYBE win over a couple of other HS kids that would have otherwise gone to a conference rival. MAC football is, and always will be, cyclical. Get the right combo of coaching and players and you can win for a few years. Nothing other than a string of good coaching hires will ever result in any sustained success, and that sustainability will always be directly correlated to the ability to identify and hire the NEXT good coach.
