Fall Practice
Re: Fall Practice
I think there’s a lot to Loeffler's theory about how we have a lot of talent but it wasn’t ever truly in game shape. We’ve got some solid pieces, we just always run out of gas. And we don’t know how to win and come up big in clutch moments.
Up 10-0 on Oregon in the first, up 14-10 on Maryland at halftime, down 3 to Toledo after 3, up 21-7 on WMU at halftime and tied at 28 after 3, down 14-13 at halftime against Kent. We were in all of those games, yet we lost every single one of them by blowing a lead or a huge opportunity.
Especially with Toledo. Sure, we ended up losing by 16. But we spotted them 17 points to start the game.
Their kicker missed a field goal when it was 31-28 UT, with 14:51 left in the fourth. We got the ball at our own 20, then we went 3 and out with only a 19 yard punt. Then the defense makes a stand and forces UT to punt. At this point, it's still 31-28 with 11:23 left, from our own one. We go three and out once again, and UT takes over at our 37. Then they score a TD and it's over.
We had two chances there with the ball in our hands and a chance to take the lead or win the game for the first time in nearly a decade, but we curled up and went three and out. That's the type of thing that needs to start changing under Loeffler. We need to be killers in that moment.

Re: Fall Practice
The issues last year with blown leads and blown opportunities were three fold. You're right on the first, poor conditioning.
Second, coaching. The coaches sometimes drew up good gameplans and had the guys ready. Oregon is a perfect example. But the coaches had no ability to adjust in game, especially against better coaches.
And third, depth or lack thereof. Unfortunately that problem is not going away. We have little depth at defensive line. However after listening to McBride, who may end up as a captain, I think our defensive backfield will have decent depth.

Today is picture day and it appears there are new uniforms for the team.

Taborn is a big kid...he may account for 2-3 % of the 5-10% who weren't on board with the new regime
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

This article could have been written back in 2010/2011 to the same results.
Coach Clawson / Loeffler has a program which is nearly half freshmen and a third walkons. Coach is not using anywhere near full scholarship allotment because coach Brandon / Jinks recruited a bunch of kids in 2006-08 / 2016-18 who could not manage college football expectations. The result is a thin roster and almost no sophomores and juniors.

I like what we've seen. The sanserif "Bowling Green" on the front is an improvement, I think.jpfalcon09 wrote:Today is picture day and it appears there are new uniforms for the team.

Very telling quote by Noah Massey in the the Blade:
“They’re more professional. They take football more serious,” Massey said. “Everything is football, football, football and school instead of our last coaching staff. We were able to do whatever we wanted, pretty much. But here, everything is like if you’re not doing it 100 percent, you can’t play, so it just forces me to go harder.”
No wonder there have been so many defections. The coaches had no control and players didn't like being held responsible with the new staff.

That’ s the fact! That’s why I hold out hope for a 5 win season. Conditioning, work ethic, focus along with coaches with skill, should turn 3 wins into 5, despite roster attrition.drumstix2388 wrote:Very telling quote by Noah Massey in the the Blade:

Re: Fall Practice
Funny how the previous coaching staff reflected the AD who hired them. Kingston lost control over the athletic department and then skirted his own accountability by jumping ship before the sh*t really hit the fan.drumstix2388 wrote:Very telling quote by Noah Massey in the the Blade:

As long as the team plays hard every snap, I'll be happy. There's no doubt we could not say that under Jinks.

You know what though, Jinks teams didn't really quit, they were just undermanned and often put in the position to lose by coaches whose schemes were not up to par. I always admired the grit and fight in the teams over the last couple seasons, at least in MAC play (throw out the 70 pt games). Not advocating for Jinks rather advocating that the kids that performed (basically the ones that are still on the roster) had the KI and competitiveness to be here and similar to Blackney turning Moe's players in to winners or Urbie turning Blackney's players in to winners I think we are in a simliar spot with those that have stuck around.

I didn’t see them play. Based on what your saying, they had the fight.... I will guess that on top of the suspect schemes, they probably ran out of gas. I know for certain the conditioning, weight lifting, diet and emphasis on treatment is 10x what it was. Strength coach is the best.Dayons_Den wrote:jpfalcon09 wrote:Funny how the previous coaching staff reflected the AD who hired them. Re: Fall Practice
Yeah, I would agree that they didn't quit, but when you're out of shape because you can do whatever you want, you get sloppy. So, sure, they kept playing hard, but they weren't getting the job done because they didn't have the stamina.roguewarrior wrote:I didn’t see them play.
