2019-2020 Schedule
Re: 2019-2020 Schedule
I would guess it is a way for our players from Miami to be able to play in front of their family and friends.
Re: 2019-2020 Schedule
As I remember we did with Ish Ali a few years ago out in California, I'm sure this is a chance for Dylan Frye, Marlon Sierra and Joniya Gadson to play at home. Cool of Huger/Moosbrugger to be willing to make that happen.factman wrote:I would guess it is a way for our players from Miami to be able to play in front of their family and friends.

Re: 2019-2020 Schedule
Why not just schedule a game against Miami and Coach Larranaga????? This makes no sense, but again, we're talking BG Men's schedule making so it makes perfect sense. Ay-Carumba!

I knew people on this board would be triggered when they saw the game in Miami is a home game. Yes, a team with 20 ACC games to play this season, an exempt event, and a neutral site game should obviously want to schedule one of the pre season MAC favorites. I suppose that's logical in some universe.
I came across an interview with an assistant at Bryant when they released their schedule and the guy said he enjoys scheduling, but it's the most hated job on each staff because it's so difficult. I heard a podcast with a Big East scheduling coordinator who was frustrated that their league is going to 20 games next season. And they lose more control with Big 12 and Big 10 tie-ins, exempt events, and two long term rivalry contracts.
It's easy to rip Bowling Green men's basketball because of the NCAA tournament drought. It frustrates all of us. I just don't understand the need to criticize the program over a problem that confronts at least 352 other schools.

Re: 2019-2020 Schedule
It's easy to rip Bowling Greens schedule when you look at it over the last 10 years. When we were bad we couldn't schedule a single P5 and this year we got 1. There are a number of very good mid-majors who schedule 3 P5 road games a year for the experience. Miami, Duke, UNC, MSU, OSU - none of them fear Bowling Green. And my point was to give Miami a home game. This isn't a neutral site game either. And I thought Mr. Frack's money was to help better our schedule??? Our program has feared playing big schools, especially if you look at the last four years. We are the ones not tango'ing!!
Re: 2019-2020 Schedule
“Fear” isn’t the problem with the power group. They need a schedule that boosts their “rpi” or whatever rating, the strength of schedule etc to boost their chances of getting in to the dance. A bottom feeder mid major dies not help their cause, but as we get stronger, it may help in scheduling

Buffalo played West Virginia, Syracuse and Marquette last year. WVU and Marquette were Top 25 teams and Buffalo was more highly regarded going into last season then we are going into this one.

Re: 2019-2020 Schedule
Which validates factman's point...teams gain nothing from playing us right now. We're good enough to conceivably beat them, but not so good that beating us matters.
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
Re: 2019-2020 Schedule
Right now we're in the limbo spot...much like we were the last time we were good 20 years ago.
UB was able to schedule some legit top flight programs last year because they were coming off a tourney win and while everybody knew they weren't a cupcake, they had enough cred for it to not be a "bad loss" if those programs lost to them. They've got years of hoops success built to get to that point.
Right now we're at the crappy spot where those that know think we could be good enough to cause issues, thus we're no cupcake. But at the same time we don't have a reputation built yet, so a loss to us would be considered an awful loss for those programs.
As long as we're not filling the schedule with another year of multiple DII schools, I can understand the conundrum with scheduling this year. I don't think we're to the point of getting any big name games just yet, but it appears we're at least not putting together a patsy schedule again.

Re: 2019-2020 Schedule
The thing is, family and friends may be the only people who show up to watch. Miami is five hours away from Jacksonville. Do we really think there are a bunch of Jacksonville grads in Miami who will want to see this?factman wrote:I would guess it is a way for our players from Miami to be able to play in front of their family and friends.
I respect creativity. Loved it in football when Bowling Green hosted Wisconsin in Cleveland and Buffalo in Columbus. But this? I'm skeptical. It feels like we are leaving money on the table here by not playing this game in Bowling Green.

South Dakota State plays Southern Cal, Nebraska, Indiana and Colorado State...just sayin.

BG fans: "We should schedule Gonzaga."
NC Central: "Maybe if we turn to twitter we can play a full schedule."

Scheduling. Is. Difficult. It's not hard to understand.

Re: 2019-2020 Schedule
Scheduling remains irrelevant UNTIL we win the MAC tourney and get 1+ wins in The Dance...and THEN return the talent the next year to continue winning.
For now, I don't care about the name-brand of which obscure low-mid-major directional we have to schedule. I need to see our guys develop during the season and be ready to kill in March.

Re: 2019-2020 Schedule
Scheduling is not irrelevant if you have a team you believe can win the MACC and if you believe that playing high level non-conference competition sets you up for a victory in the NCAA Tournament.
I believe BG can win the MACC and thus make the NCAA tournament, and I believe playing 2-3 tournament level teams could better prepare such a team for that potential 1+ victory.
That is just my opinion.
