Re: L A TECH
... and Needham shanked a pretty easy one. Maybe this is also part of coach's thinking on these fourth-and-shorts.
Re: L A TECH
Sigh.
Three trips to the red zone.
0 points. Maybe those missed FGs are why we Loeffler keeps going for it on fourth down?

Both teams are embarrassing. Can’t see LTU winning many games this year.
Re: L A TECH
This will surely go down as among the most frustrating games in a while. Finish drives and we are ahead comfortably. Despite all the errant passes and inability to run, we have been very much in this game.

It reminds me a bit of the 1995 game. The Bulldogs picked BG's Ryan Henry six times, and we were still in the game the whole way. Bowling Green isn't that far away from winning games like this.MarkL wrote:This will surely go down as among the most frustrating games in a while. Finish drives and we are ahead comfortably. The only positive to take away from this game is that the defense looks better than any of us expected this early in the season.MarkL wrote:This will surely go down as among the most frustrating games in a while. Offensively, it's a mess.

I didn't think we would win but only 7 points against this opponent is pretty bad.

Re: L A TECH
So...this was my first game at the Doyt since 2015. I missed a lot of bad football in the last 3 years and was hoping for better today. It didn’t really happen, but this wasn’t as bad a game as the final score would seem to suggest.
The running game did decently well today, especially considering La Tech didn’t have to worry about any deep threats vertically. The defense gave up some really big plays in the first half but otherwise did a pretty good job. I’m encouraged by what I saw there, especially in the defensive front seven. They got after the quarterback and put him on the ground a few times. Coverage downfield could’ve been better but it wasn’t horrible like I’m used to seeing. The offensive line had some issues in pass protection, especially in the 2nd quarter. They seemed to get it together a bit after halftime.
But quarterback and red zone offense...oh my heavens was that bad. Further, we were outraged when BG went for it on 4th down instead of kicking field goals twice inside the 10, so naturally the third time they decide to kick the short fg and the kicker shanks it. That pretty much validated the earlier decisions to go for it.
But holy heck, you cannot tell me that this guy #6 is the best quarterback we have. You mean to tell me we don’t have a single student on campus that throws a better pass than that? If that’s the case then we’re probably a 3-4 win team this year even though there are obvious signs of improvement elsewhere on the field, especially on defense.

Re: L A TECH
Biggest positive takeaway: defense. Past defenses, if put on the field in the same position as today, would have given up 60+ points. Defense has made strides.
Biggest negative takeaway: QB play. I know, the guy had an awful injury and a couple months ago was working at Home Depot while studying in Delaware. Still ... this has to improve. He missed some receivers that I would have expected Aaron Pankratz to have made in that awful 2010 Buffalo game. And he led #4 straight into a bad hit that could have been a big play and instead exposed a receiver to an unnecessarily big hit. Better QB play and this is a completely different game. I'm hopeful there is improvement on this front as the season continues.

This is a good observation. I was going to come on here and point out that the running game wasn't very good either. And it wasn't: 47 carries for 119 yards is not good at all. But, as you point out, nobody is afraid of our deep balls right now. That does not help.bgsufalcon24 wrote:The running game did decently well today, especially considering La Tech didn’t have to worry about any deep threats vertically.
Line play could be better. In some cases, Wade had to move pretty quickly to escape pressure, even on deep drops. Even some NFL quarterbacks struggle to make accurate throws when they are scrambling.
Re: L A TECH
If McDonald were eligible, as the guy who won the job in camp, I feel like we could really win some ballgames this year.
Need to work more inside the 10. Had 3 drives deep in the red zone that resulted in zero points.
I’m encouraged by a lot of what I saw defensively. Gotta keep working to improve.

This is what happens when you go through 3 years with a coach barely qualified to lead a high school team, let alone a mid major program in D-1. The roster has been pretty well decimated by what has to happen in order to turn things around. BG likely won't win but one or two more games this year, if they're fortunate. The price to be paid for cleaning out the stench of the past coaching staff. Better days are ahead.
