Orange and Brown Scrimmage 2019

Post by mbenecke »

The Orange and Brown Scrimmage has been announced! It will be held Sunday, October 6 at 4:00pm inside the Stroh Center. Parking and admission are both free, and there will be three-point/dunk competitions at halftime.

I got to shake hands and chat with Coach Huger at this event last year, and that was when he told me that he thought his team could surprise some people that season. 22 wins and a MAC championship game appearance later, and it's cool to see that his prediction came true.

Come out and support the Falcons!

Big fan of those whites, but I'd rather the black ones be a dark brown. I'm not sure what it adds having them in black.

Attended more games than any responsible student should have.

Recruits love it. That's just kinda how it is nowadays. Alternate uniforms are all the rage, even if they aren't technically school colors.

I think they look sharp, and I'm glad they are classy-looking. I'm also happy we didn't full-on cut out the brown road uni.

They all look fine to my eyes. For the future script "Falcons" on simple orange uniforms would be my choice.

If we could truly run wild with ideas, retro uniforms playing in Eppler over a break would be the ultimate Falcon Experience.

Saw some GREAT games in old men’s gym. Ed Diddle, HOF coach from WKU, VS Harold Anderson, HOF coach from BG. RED towel vs GREEN towel. And great players from both teams.

I like having the black unis but a bit disappointed that the gray got cut, those were my faves (I think we still wore them last year?).

I'll never be a fan of the script lettering though...have always hated cursive/script...since the days of 3rd grade where they forced us to start using it.

Love the script for 2 reasons:
1. The young ones cannot read it
2. The older one complain that it’s no longer used

Honestly it looks retro and that’s what I like is old style uniforms.

Thank goodness! Especially since my kid is hell bent on writing with the wrong hand, quite glad I hopefully won't have to get him through cursive!

No it wouldn't. Trust me - we want people to come back for more games.

The smell in Eppler is HORRIBLE.

I can smell that place just thinking about being in there. GAG!!

I have not been in there to play a pickup game since the early 90’s. Old gyms smell like old B.O. I’m sure modern ventilation sterilizes our senses.

The wrong hand? Good Lord, man, get him to a priest for an exorcism!

I like the new uniforms and don't have an issue with the cursive. But I also liked the grays and wish they'd have kept them.

Has anyone heard what the line ups will be in the scrimmage. I'm bored waiting for the 3:30 FB kickoff so I'll take a guess. I'll assume they want to 1st and 2nd string to play together. I included potential 1-5 positions each could play.

Many unknowns with new players plus Laster (suspension?) and Swingle (eligibility?).

Team 1
1 Frye, Sr(1,2) - Goode, Sr(1)
2 Turner, Jr(r)(1,2,3)
3 Diggs, Jr(2,3,4) -ElSasser-Fr(2,3)
4 Plowden,Jr(3,4) - Sierra, Sr(4,5)
5 Mattos,So(5)

Team 2
1 Laster, Sr(1,2) - Zeigler, Fr(1,2,3)
2 Fields, So(1,2,3)
3 Turner, Fr(2,3,4)
4 Kulackovskis, So(r) (3,4,5)
5 Swingle, Fr(R) (5) -Gadson, Jr(5)

Anyone else go? I made the first half and left after the half after my 3 year old was getting antsy. Some thoughts.

We look very talented. Love the blend of youth and solid basketball players and continuing to add in tough juco transfers is a great way to build a team. The newcomers looked pretty good. Swingle, Juice and Gadson didn't play. Swingle still is an unknown for this year.

I am betting the lineup is
Frye-Fields-Turner-Plowden-Sierra
A little on the small side but Sierra is the steadiest of the bigs and brings toughness.

Some general thoughts about players.
All 5 of the guys that I suggest will start looked solid. Nothing to add there.
Laster looked very solid as well and will be the first guy off the bench.
I was most impressed by Matiss, He can shoot and had some nice moves around the rim. I expect him to be the biggest surprise this year and make the biggest jump to becoming a major contributor.
Ziegler and Chandler Turner each had flashes but seemed a bit passive. Ziegler is a great athlete and Turner seems much more of the methodical smart basketball player that will do the little things. The sky's the limit for both of them but I don't expect anything special this year.
Diggs looks like he will contribute right away. I would bet he rounds out the top 8 in the rotation, especially if Swingle is not eligible.
Elsasser surprisingly looked like he belonged. If I didn't know he was a walk on I would think he will eventually be a major contributor to the team.
Mattos didn't look like he developed much.

My guess on the lineup.

1. Frye, Sr-Laster, Sr-Goode, Sr
2. Fields, So-Ziegler, Fr
3. Turner, Jr(R)-Diggs, Jr-Elsasser, Fr
4. Plowden, Jr-Kulackovskis, So(R)
5. Sierra, Sr-Mattos, So-Gadson, Jr-Swingle, Fr(R)

As far as the rotation my guess is

1. Frye, Sr-Laster, Sr
2. Fields, So-Frye, Sr
3. Turner, Jr(R)-Diggs, Jr
4. Plowden, Jr-Kulackovskis, So(R)
5. Sierra, Sr-Kulackovskis, So(R)

Mattos, Gadson, Turner and Zeigler all at most 5-8 minutes a game filling in. This changes abruptly with Swingle potentially starting at the 5.
