Man, that is a long time. The Freaklings were 13 and 10 the last time we won.
As much as I hate them, they've simply been the better program and more consistent over the last 10-15 years. I envy their consistency while we go up and down way too much. That being said....I love how Coach Loeffler is putting the emphasis on the game. I love Coach Clawson but he didn't put enough emphasis on the game. Babers and Junks couldn't have cared less about the game. That trickles down to the players.
The last nine years they expect to win where we hope to win...that is a BiG difference.

Yes she does. Not sure she will be able to make it out on Saturday, depends on the weather.h2oville rocket wrote:FIFYMajorFalcon92 wrote:Their team is better than ours right now and has been for some time, AND they GET to live in Toledo.

Nice change to my quote BTW.

No doubt UT has become the best overall program in the MAC over the past decade. THey've been consistently at or near the top in the conference while we (and everybody else) have ebbed and flowed as we lose/hire coaches.Falconfreak90 wrote:Man, that is a long time. But what really sticks in my craw is how we've been unable to beat them even in the years we were the absolutely better team. I don't think this is the year, but I would really love to see us take them down when THEY are clearly the better overall team. Would be nice for a change.

Re: 3606
Toledo's been smart to maintain the same philosophy across different coaches. BG went from being a team that ground out possessions and used defense to flip the field, to a high octane, out-score you philosophy, to whatever the hell Jinks tried to do, to now what Loeffler wants to accomplish. Too much turbulence and too many players who get lost in the wash because they don't fit a certain scheme. In all honesty, BG should have chosen an assistant from the Clawson or Babers trees to keep some semblance of consistency.hammb wrote:No doubt UT has become the best overall program in the MAC over the past decade. Re: 3606
I think this one is going to be closer than most think, and I actually think we have a very realistic chance of winning. Loeffler has put the emphasis on this, as was mentioned earlier. I agree, it would be awesome to beat That School Up North in a year that we are the clear underdog, and also won't be competing for the MAC East. This would certainly be that year.
I've been thinking about this for a while, and I'm sure it's been mentioned here before, but does anyone else think it would be cool for the MAC to put together a Rivalry Week when scheduling? It would probably need to be either the 2nd or 3rd Saturday in October, but it would be great promotion for a lead-in to weeknight MACtion to have this schedule just before November games start:
Toledo vs Bowling Green
Ohio vs Miami
Akron vs Kent
Western vs Central
Ball State vs Northern Illinois
Eastern vs Buffalo
Obviously, it's not a perfect system, with 3 Michigan schools and Buffalo, but it would be an exciting week in the conference.

We need to be realistic. The most points BG has scored against FBS competition is 20 against freaking Kent State. Toledo has a very good offense and an improved defense. This game won't be close.cameron wrote:I think this one is going to be closer than most think, and I actually think we have a very realistic chance of winning. Re: 3606
Speaking to that issue, the rules makers came up with a way to determine which team was better. They simply called it “score” and whichever team won the “score” was deemed the better team.hammb wrote:No doubt UT has become the best overall program in the MAC over the past decade. Eh, I liked our MAC championship trophies in 2013 and 2015 a little more than some regular season game. But maybe that's just me.

If BGSU wins the battle of I-75 and finishes 3-9, and Toledo goes 9-3 and wins the MAC, would you talk s**t to Toledo fans??? I bet you would! Because although we won the league, you stepped up and beat your rival! The rivalry game always Trump's MACC! It just felt like it didn't because you had titles in 2013 and 2015, and our last was in 2004. It was your only playing card...
We won a title in 2017, which was a goal we hadn't met since 2004 and 2001. Now we have 3 MACC in the past 18 years, and have beaten our rival 9 in a row. Heaven!!
We just needed to get over the hump to really talk smack..now we have the best of both worlds.
BGSU MAC titles since 2000...
Toledo MAC titles since 2000...
Rivalry games won since 2000...

This is not a rivalry game anymore. We are not able to beat anyone lately, so it's impossible to say there's a rivalry until we are competitive again. Go ahead and keep kicking us when we are down. There was a day when things were trending the other way. Some day it'll swing back around and this will become a rivalry again, but it might take a while.

The only intrigue for this year's game will be the weather. Chilly, windy, decent chance of rain. Might play a role, who knows?

Re: 3606
Just two cents here, but I've seen this a couple of times and think it's absurd. Of course BG-Toledo is a rivalry game.Beaker wrote:This is not a rivalry game anymore. No, BG has not been competitive for most of the last decade. To lump all of the games together is just as crazy. Half of the 8 games during the streak have been a touchdown or less and three others were two score games. And BG has been one of the worst teams in the country during part of that stretch.
But I don't think competitiveness is a factor in making a series a rivalry. If it does, and BG is not competitive any longer, then why does the series happen every season? It's the only cross over division game that is played every year. If it's not a rivalry, I'd rather play Eastern Michigan instead.
Re: 3606
Halftime scores since the last BG win:
2018: UT, 24-21 (31-28 after 3)
2017: UT, 24-21
2016: UT, 14-7 (Toledo scored the winning touchdown with 18 seconds left in the game, but it was tied at 35 after 59 minutes)
2015: UT, 30-14
2014: UT, 13-10 (Toledo scored the winning touchdown with 10 minutes left)
2013: UT, 21-7 (BG came back and grabbed the lead, but Toledo scored the winning touchdown with 1:22 left)
2012: UT, 17-3
2011: BG, 7-0
2010: UT, 26-7
BG has only led at halftime once in the last 9 match ups, but it was a one-score game at the half 5 times, with 2 of those being the past 2 years, and 4 of the games ending with a Toledo touchdown in the final quarter that sealed it.
It's absolutely been a competitive series these past 9 years, despite the lopsided win/loss record. On most of those days, it's been a coin flip that just doesn't go our way.
I don't expect a win on Saturday - you can't expect a win in a rivalry game like this - but I do expect us to show some fight and to work our tails off. It's at home inside the Doyt. It's the 100th anniversary game. BG is wearing the old "LT" helmets. There's going to be some fire in our eyes on Saturday, and stranger upsets have happened before.

Re: 3606
The two times BGSUcks had teams they thought were better than ours (2013, 2015) were two of the times Toledo came out strong and had pedal to the gas for 60 minutes. 2013 was the only time y'all were actually the better team... It's a rivalry because of proximity, but not based on culture as we have similar common and working spaces.
BGSUcks will throw every trick, gimmick at us. I wouldn't be surprised if BGSUcks only watched Toledo film all year and are ready for us. But the talent and play calling gap is massive. If Mitch G gets hurt this game could get spooky??? Maybe another big injury? Not sure how this would have to set up for a Falcon win.
Thanks for the new seats though as it will protect our fans from the wind.

Re: 3606
No doubt UT has been probably the most consistent program in the MAC the last 10 years. They are almost always competing for the West title, but they have had some of the biggest choke jobs late in the year against inferior opponents.
If BG was in the MAC West the last 10 years, we likely don’t even get to the championship game in 2013 and 2015.
It’s still a rivalry, but we’ve been owned basically ever since Greg Christopher took over the Athletic Department and turned it into a ****show. Kingston made a huge mistake that basically gave us no chance the last 3 years, and Moose is trying to cleanup the mess.
