I may be mistaken but, I think Ray Meyer and his Depaul team may have vistied the 'Old Mens Gym'.

Ray Meyer and DePaul visited Anderson Arena a few times. That included BG wins over a top ten DePaul team late in the '63-'64 season and in Bill Fitch's final home game in '68.

This "Juice" character that you speak of, I know not. Who may he be?

Anderson Arena and the “ old men’s gym” are two distinctly different facilities. Don’t recall if DePaul came before Anderson Arena.

I looked it up and found that BG and DePaul played just about every year throughout the 1950s. At least twice in the Men's Gym.

Heard that Mattos was the fifth starter but not confirmed. He honestly seemed the weakest at the intrasquad scrimmage and I had him at about fourth on the depth chart at who I wanted playing there. Could be a great sign. Oa

Confirmed on Mattos as 5th starter. Honestly, he flashed a bit in scrimmages to start last year but looked lost all season otherwise. In the scrimmage he looked like just another guy and a poor athlete. I don't expect this decision to last long. It's an odd one for me but from the coaching staff that seems to love old school bigs it makes some sense. I just hope we don't get 3 years of him clogging up the middle and slowing everything down.

Guess for rotation
1 Frye, Sr-Laster, Sr
2 Fields, So-Zeigler, Fr
3 Turner, Jr(R)-Turner, Fr-Diggs, Jr
4 Plowden, Jr-Sierra, Sr-Kulackovskis, So(r)
5 Mattos, So-Gadson, Jr-Swingle, Fr(R)

1 Frye, Sr (20) - Laster, Sr (20)
2 Fields, So (20) - Frye (10) Turner, (10)
3 Turner, Jr(R) (25) - Diggs, Jr (15)
4 Plowden, Jr (25) - Kulackovskis, So(r) (15)
5 Mattos, So- (15) - Sierra (20) -Kulackovskis, So(r) (5)

Anything the Freshman or Gadson/Swingle add will be gravy.

Would prefer Sierra or even Kulackovskis over Mattos. I think Kul could create a lot of mismatches as a stretch 4/5 with his shooting ability if he somewhat protects the paint, being that he's not the strongest fella in the world. Still way too early to tell and I hope I'm wrong, but my gut tells me Mattos is Cam Black 2.0. Biggest guy on the floor 90% of the time but lacks tenacity and moves like he has bricks in his sneakers.

Quick question. Gadsen looked like a really good up and coming recruit coming out of HS. In the few times I've seen him, he's shown nice flashes of ability. Yet, he never sees the court.

So, what's the story? Does anyone know about his development and playing? Is it a mental thing? Does he not play within the system? WHAT?

To me he's always looked talented and yet lost at the same time.

That said, he had his leg in one of those push cart things at the scrimmage so I wouldn't expect to see him playing anytime early.

Hammb, I tend to agree with your assessment. He's got a ton of talent, and from what I have seen over the years he has a phenomenal attitude. Now it's all about putting it all together on a consistent basis. I hope he can - the kid looks like a monster.

I think you could get away with Sierra/Mattis at the 5 most of the time. With Frye, Fields, Turner, Plowden you're going to be small but should be able to survive as long as the other team doesn't have a traditional 5 to exploit your lack of size, at the same time with but guys you would create a matchup problem for the other team having to pull both bigs to the perimeter to guard Plowden and Mattis/Sierra. I'd love to see Swingle get he waiver, the tape I've seen on him is better than Mattos and Gadsen, he would give to traditional big for a change of pace and to rebound/guard against teams that play a traditional 5.

That's where I'm at.

I don't think a traditional 5 is at all necessary in modern college hoops, especially in the MAC. You're going to have issues from time to time, but the number of legit post threat centers we play is not going to be real high. I'm not at all a fan of playing a guy who isn't in your top 7-8 players (and I"m not convinced Mattos is) just because he fits the size mold of a traditional 5. There were games over the years where Wiggins was a tremendous liability for us, and he was a GOOD MAC center.

I'd much rather roll with Sierra/Mattis at that spot for most games to create the offensive mismatches than play a lesser player because he's bigger. Now if we start getting demolished on the boards because we're too small? Then I might start to re-think my position, but I would wait to see how it worked out before inserting a Mattos. You cannot win if you're not able to hold your own on the glass, so I'd be working with my undersized guys on positioning/technique to ensure they can hold their own. If they can you should have a great athletic advantage to create mismatches on the other end.

Revisiting Mattos

Looks pretty good. Not a stud athlete but pretty powerful with nice touch.

Going to focus on optimism.
1. Reportedly 8 boards and 3 blocks against a veteran group of bigs v Depaul
2. Showed some nice feet in the early season last year.
3. Video does look like what we think...big and methodical.
