Nobody is saying nursing home residents are any less worthy of life. It was known early on that the elderly and the sick were the most vulnerable, while the young and healthy were relatively unaffected. MORE resources should have been focused on protecting the elderly than shutting everything down and trying to instill fear in everyone.Schadenfreude wrote:I do not question the figure. Dial back the virtue signal...it's blinding your common sense...Schadenfreude wrote:I do not question the figure. I question the attitude that nursing home residents are somehow less worthy of life and our mutual protection than other people.
If we know who is the most likely to suffer from the disease we can take a more targeted approach to protecting them while keeping the rest of the population functioning. Not warehousing Wuhan virus patients in nursing homes would be a good jumping off point
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

Can we get back to football ... or anything BGSU related? Or anything that is a reprieve from talking points and divisions?
MarkL has spoken.

No! We need to talk about other schools and discuss what divisions they belong to and how many points they scored!MarkL wrote:Can we get back to football ... or anything BGSU related? Or anything that is a reprieve from talking points and divisions?

This thread is such a perfect microcosm of the world we live in. You've got one group saying "Open it all up, ain't no government gonna tell me to stay home" & the other group saying "If you leave your house you will kill your grandparents & it's only safe to attend protests".
It's easy for to be an extremist, you call the other guy the enemy and feel morally superior because you denounce everything the opposition is saying. But isn't the easiest solution just to be pragmatic? Shutting everything down was absolutely absurd, and not bringing students back would be absurd. Likewise not mandating masks in all public indoor settings is absurd.
I think everyone needs to take a deep breath and think calmly instead of "toeing the party line". You'll find the air is a lot better in the middle

Is this real life? No smart person thinks this is a bad flu!roguewarrior wrote:We listened to them, we don’t listen to them, an outcry when we defund them, now they are wrong when they admit they were wrong.... whatever ....

It's the biggest cause of death each week now in the states and growing. The media doesn't create statistics.Falconwriter wrote:So you really want to bring logic into this? Shame on you. You know as well as I do that the media will create a huge firestorm if we see a death from Covid on a college team during the season. You also know that the NCAA is far from the most rational organization when there's controversy and negative press.roguewarrior wrote:Falconwriter wrote:All well and good until a football player gets it and dies. Or gets badly injured, paralyzed or killed playing football? Time to get real already....It’s a virus with a 99.97% survival rate.
Like I said...all Hell will break loose. I want the season played out as much as anyone, but you know damn well the various boards of trustees and administrators are thinking about this just as I am.

Who is your kid?roguewarrior wrote:My kid is on the team and there is no hesitation for him to go back. Lawyer up for a virus? Don’t be a worm. If the family/player is afraid, don’t go back. It’s that simple. 77% of Ohio deaths are from NURSING HOMES. The fearful should not be involved in public policy. Shut up, leave the rest of us to press on, and stay home. You can be the wise one at home. The team and school will have plenty of social distancing and protocols in place, that is a guarantee. You can laugh at all of us later, if it makes you feel good.

It's like you have no idea what happened in New York or Italy. Or that the cases are rising across the country.Flipper wrote:https://www.cleveland.com/coronavirus/2 ... ports.html
70+% is an accurate figure. The economy has been sent into a recession...jobs have been lost and businesses have been closed ...children have been psychologically scarred by the disruption...the health of many people was negatively impacted by their failure to seek treatment for heart attacks and strokes because they were afraid to go the hospital....all this for a disease that has proven to be nowhere near as problematic as it was thought to be.
We need to CLOSELY examine the forecasts used to guide policy and we need to reassess the Harley Quinn style mallet used in response to this pandemic. It could very well be that more harm was done than good

This was expected. Measures were taken to lower the amount of cases and immediately, very dumb people said, "SEE it wasn't as bad as they said." It wasn't as bad as they said because they took the measures.
My perfectly healthy buddy from my wedding party who lives in NYC got it in March. He is a marathoner who still can't run more than 3 miles. If you think that that mortality story tells the story here you're not looking at the big picture. He never went into the hospital.

You probably want to recheck your statistics there. Especially if you're relying on the media for them.Globetrotter wrote: It's the biggest cause of death each week now in the states and growing. The media doesn't create statistics.

This virus is either the worst thing ever or it’s blown way out of proportion. It all depends on your experience with the virus. People personally affected by it (they got sick, a family member got sick, a friend got sick, they work in healthcare and saw people sick) will say this is the worst thing. People with no personal experience will say this is all just a bad flu. It’s all just perspective. This is exactly what is happening with the BLM movement.
A person’s experiences shape their perspective. What’s interesting is everybody is speaking the truth because it is the truth that they know. The more that each side tries to bash the other side into submission, the more the two sides will just argue and get nowhere. Perhaps we need to just listen to each other and seek to understand.
For something perhaps a little less politically charged, think about the pit bull breed of dog. Either they are extremely vicious and should be kept away from children and other dogs, or they are gentle dogs that are misunderstood and perhaps only bred for violence in specific cases. If you reflect upon your opinion of that one, I can almost guarantee it is because of your experience with that specific breed.

A smart person does not panic over a condition with a ~99.97% survival rate.
It’s not my point of view, it’s a fact.
