Based on the departments financials, I'm willing to bet the risk factor wasn't near the top of the list. Even with $2 million in payday games, the football program loses money. Even with those games gone, most of the cost is still there. If you play the season now, you lose $3 million without anybody even testing positive. THEN you add the risk in and it becomes obvious the season can't be played. If it wasn't for the budgetary concerns (i.e. normal season financials) they would risk it.MarkL wrote:And also risk. Of course it starts with money. Unfortunately delaying the inevitable cost them even more money. Putting all the athletes in hotels while decision maker, one after another, waited for someone to step in and say this makes no sense. BGSU was sending out one message while athletics was sending out a completely different message. Now comes spending more money to “plan” for Spring football with It being a long shot too.

This ...at this point...NOT a public health crisis.

Of course it isn’t.Flipper wrote:This ...at this point...NOT a public health crisis.
It is absolutely financial and bowing to public opinion. If we can’t have fans, we can’t earn any money, even a Little. All those loving the shutdown.... if we save JUST ONE LIFE, it was worth it...... How are we saving lives as we are still training and practicing from now until spring? Foolish. Where were all you germaphobes during H1N1-SARS?
It’s not my point of view, it’s a fact.

Don't let facts get in the way of your statement. US Deaths from H1N1 for the year 2009-10 12,469. Covid deaths in the 5 months of activity this year 162M.roguewarrior wrote:. Where were all you germaphobes during H1N1-SARS?Flipper wrote:This ...at this point...NOT a public health crisis.

It's nice to know your ignorance is consistent. I especially enjoy your statement: "The risk is going to be there no matter what..." Ummm...no. No it's not. Putting more than 100 people in close quarters x (the number of college teams) is exponentially increasing the number of potential people to get the disease and (more importantly) be carriers to others. All of those potential patients and carriers would be IN ADDITION TO any other risk people might take. Football isn't a daily part of life so you cannot simply include it as a part of everyday risk. If you can't see that all these people in very close quarters doesn't increase the risk by tens of thousands of people -- then I guess there's no hope for you.Critical Thinker wrote:What grandparent is thinking, "I'm so glad Johnny isn't playing football this year, now it's safe for me to see him!" You may be more susceptible to infection playing football than say, getting a haircut. But even going to the barber means risking infection, and if an infection means putting parents and professors in mortal peril, why should players even be doing that? The risk is going to be there no matter what you do unless you intend to keep the players in bed all day like Charlie Bucket's grandparents.Globetrotter wrote:Whose lives saved? Teachers, other people who interact with the players ie parents and grandparents. And just because people don't die doesn't mean they don't have their lungs wrecked for lifeCritical Thinker wrote:Whose life will be saved? The players aren't going to die. The older coaches can be distanced on the sidelines. Younger trainers can take the place of older ones.Schadenfreude wrote:This may well save lives.
Besides, what's the alternative to playing football? Will everyone who would have gone to the stadium on Saturday now stay in bed all day?
What's the alternative to playing football? 100 guys not rubbing up against each other for an hour.

Less than 5% positive test rate means there is no longer a pandemic.DetroitFalcon wrote:???Flipper wrote:This ...at this point...NOT a public health crisis.

It's really sad this virus has become so politicized. Imagine the progress the country could have made if everyone was pulling in the same direction. Like Steinbrecher said, could not have imagined being here back in March. The bickering of people from both sides of the aisle though and the unwillingness to work together to fight a common enemy has brought us here.
Back to the topic at hand, of course this decision was made over money. All decisions in business are. Football for colleges is a business as we all know. You'll see the landscape for college football change after all this. The P5 will adopt a more robust conference schedule and reduce the number of cupcake games.
I feel for those who are going to lose their jobs in all this. Football will always be here in some capacity but yesterday's decision will affect hundreds of people and also impact the local economy, and those are the real losers in all this.

I'm assuming you meant to say 162k. But we all know that number is highly inflated (die in a car crash but test positive for Covid means Covid death). What we don't know, and probably never will, is how many suicide deaths can be attributed directly to the measures taken to "stop the spread." Or how many deaths/health issues have occurred from people avoiding preventative care due to restrictions. Hospitals are laying off staff. We truly have reached the point where the cure is worse than the disease.fredthefalcon wrote:Don't let facts get in the way of your statement. US Deaths from H1N1 for the year 2009-10 12,469. The definition of a pandemic is not directly tied to any sort of positivity rate.pdt1081 wrote:Less than 5% positive test rate means there is no longer a pandemic.DetroitFalcon wrote:???Flipper wrote:This ...at this point...NOT a public health crisis.

And the fact that American tourists and business people are being kept out of countries that rely so heavily financially on the US speaks LOUDLY.TalonsUpPuckDown wrote:All of the countries who have closed their borders to Americans disagree with you.pdt1081 wrote:Less than 5% positive test rate means there is no longer a pandemic.DetroitFalcon wrote:???Flipper wrote:This ...at this point...NOT a public health crisis.
