Meanwhile the inflated salaries of college athletics can’t figure it out. That 21 million in revenue the Board of Trustees approved for BGSU Athletics seems to be just a bit off.

Next Wednesday August 26th, BGSU will literally rob the students of nearly 13 million in student fees that go towards athletics. That's supposed to get them admission to games that won't be happening. Instead, this years students get to pay for fellow students to train for sports that won't be happening, while living in hotels. They also get to help support the nearly 10 million in salaries for BGSU Athletics staff. Will Bob and all the administrators be having their own kids sit out sports too?

I’m not against athletics getting student fees, but I agree completely that football shouldn’t be putting players in hotels now for a season that won’t happen until the spring. That is just common sense.

Isn’t this a football thread? Never thought there would be whining against sports here... I’m sure if a CPA familiar with Public Institutions dissected Every line item of the BG budget, there are all kinds of places fees end up that aren’t in everyone’s best interest. No football or D1 athletic presence at BG, and BG is Tri-C West. Careful what you wish for. I Always question people who rail against what other people earn..... didnt we just have a group of High School coaches here?

Students pay fees for a ton of stuff. Think of those fees like taxes. Every fee they pay essentially goes to things that may or may not benefit them directly. For example, your federal income tax dollars go towards funding initiatives to assist special populations all the time, most of which you don't belong to (think race, gender, socioeconomic status, age, disability status, or even city of residence). Yes, students go to games for free, but to argue that their fees only give them free admission to games is short-sighted at best. The fee that goes towards athletics provides for an intercollegiate athletic experience at their institution. BGSU is one of only a few institutions with Division 1 football, basketball, and hockey.

Now, if we ever got our priorities adjusted and stopped valuing athletics overall and instead, say, valued the arts, then perhaps the students would pay fees to support music, theater, and art at BGSU. Then they could get "free admission" to music concerts and art expos.

Our priorities have already adjusted to say funding athletics in the current model is going the wrong direction. College students barely attend games.
Yet, at each turn, BGSU continues to pay coaches more, pay administrators more, and charge more in student fees annually. Now the area high schools without a 20 million dollar budget are figuring out how to try to make things work in this environment, but the urgency isn't quite there for BGSU and other state funded schools. They will get paychecks from the student fees, while everything shuts down. They will say it's all in the name of safety, but it's really about both safety and self protecting wages. If BGSU students and parents actually knew student fees were 50% plus percent toward athletics, it would be forced to change. But, most do not, and that information is made as difficult as possible to find.

If Loeffler is worth being paid more than the Rodney Rogers, the money should take care of itself based on his programs ability to bring in funds.

If Bob Moosbrugger is worth his wage, his department should be able to reverse the trend in student fees.

If Athletics stop because of a pandemic, it shouldn't be on the students of BGSU to keep it afloat.

Remember back in May when Bob discussed all the ways his department would adjust for Covid. Less equipment, reduce travel cost. Most reductions would come in the form of less for student athletes. In any other industry, certainly one where the operation can’t function, staff cuts are made first. Trim the fat. Instead, Bob’s first move was cutting baseball. A decision that made the University look ridiculous just 3 weeks later. Bob keeps saying that COVID wasn’t in the Athletic Director handbook. Well Bob, you are paid to lead, not follow a handbook. Unfortunately, like a lot of leaders these days, the handbook is Twitter.

I saw a couple of recent tweets as well...completely inappropriate coming from a head coach’s twitter account. As a head coach you are a representative of BGSU....tweeting personal political beliefs and encouraging athletes to vote a certain way is not the correct use of that forum.

I noticed the same tweets. It’s interesting that the athletes are educated and warned about social media, but a few coaches don’t seem to understand.

They’re sharing their viewpoint on their personal account. It’d be different if an official account was being used to share their viewpoint.
