It happened to me so gradually that I didn't even realize it. One day I looked in the mirror & I was fat.

I saw no mention in this story of a control group. The announcement of 30%-35% of positive athletes having inflamed cardiac muscle only means something if we know how many non-positive athletes under the same conditions also have myocarditis. How do we know the positive athletes are elevated without knowing what the normal rate is? I'm not saying they are not elevated, I'm saying the story should have cited this to give us some kind of reference point. Cardiac muscle is still muscle and any muscle tissue can get inflamed with use or over use. Do we know conclusively that none of this inflammation could come from athletes' work outs that exert their cardiac muscle? There are a great many inflammatory medical conditions out there that have nothing to do with covid. Do we know if any of these potential causes were looked at or considered? And is it 30% or is it 35%? If doctors looked at this and tracked it, then they should know the number....the exact number.BGDrew wrote:PSU football doctor: 30-35 percent of COVID-19-positive Big Ten athletes had myocarditis

If I were making a decision to play or cancel the season, knowing the kind of impact that decision carries with it, I'd want to base it on a lot more than just the incomplete findings announced by this doctor. I certainly hope they based it on more than that.
Re: Sources: MAC postpones all fall sports, including footba
So the S-T is going to start publishing a weekly update of covid cases at area schools. That's great, we need to be informed, but if they are going to do that, then I would appreciate them also publishing weekly updates of other infectious diseases. Shouldn't we all be told about the spread of influenza A and influenza B? Chicken pox infections would be good to know about and who doesn't want to know about Herpes and Syphilis so they can steer clear? I mean, come on - at least cover the bases for us.

The Sentinel will publish whatever BGSU wants them to have published. That's how it works these days. They knew about Covid cases over the summer involving athletics, but chose to not seek further information or publish that.

Excellent point...my thought was "what is the baseline"? Did they screen covid negatives for myocarditis as well?Beaker wrote:I saw no mention in this story of a control group. I blame the fork! It was the fork's fault! Although, you could argue that the spoon is more to blame since it allowed for the consumption of a totally different type of food category. I don't know, do you get more obese from liquidy food or solid food? Now I'm stressed thinking about this. I need a twinkie!threestooges wrote:Well played, my friend, well played.Beaker wrote:I beg to differ, sir. Considering myocarditis is rare (less than 200,000 cases per year) common sense tells you that any group testing positive for it at a 33% rate is really bad. That’s not even taking into account high-level athletes.Flipper wrote:Excellent point...my thought was "what is the baseline"? Myocarditis is also one of the leading causes of sudden death in athletes. It’s second only to cardiac abnormalities.

If other conferences decide that they will pick up football at the end of October, is there any chance that the MAC may do the same?? I doubt it but what do you all think??
Re: Sources: MAC postpones all fall sports, including footba
Great question, without an easy answer. I'd love to see BG back on the field soon (if it's safe). But it sounds like we're pretty committed to a spring season at this point.Falco_peregrinusana wrote:If other conferences decide that they will pick up football at the end of October, is there any chance that the MAC may do the same?? I still think that it's a better financial move to commit to the spring. Get a more dedicated TV audience with a legitimate shot of having ticket revenue, and if they can partner up to do something with the Mountain West, even better.mbenecke wrote:Great question, without an easy answer. MAC needs to just try to go in the spring. Hopefully Covid numbers will be down by then. Plus the MAC isn’t really pumping out NFL draftees, they won’t get many guys opting out in the spring.
BIG10 is considering coming back because they know a lot of good players won’t play because of the draft (it’s even happening in the SEC right now). Additionally SEC, ACC, and Big12 schools are using the cancellation of fall football as a recruiting pitch. “How committed can the BIG10 and PAC-12 be to football if they won’t even try to play.” BIG10 coaches are pushing their ADs hard to find a way to get back playing this fall, I’m guessing they will be playing by mid October.
