Breakout player
Breakout player
Basketball board has been a bit quiet so I was curious who everyone's breakout player is this year? I won't get to see practice this year so I'm in the same boat as everyone. For me I'm going with zeigler because he showed flashes with his athleticism on both sides of the ball. Has the potential to be our best defender instead of fields and on offense he can blow by defenders. He still needs to improve his jumper or defenses will play off of him but shooting can be fixed. Also i think a lot of his mistakes were growing pains as a freshman. His development as an on ball scorer will be huge to help juice out this season.
I didn't choose juice or plowden because they're past breakout in my book and tried to avoid freshmen since it's hard to say. Fields didn't improve as much as I hoped last year and I'm always weary of our bigs improving. Just my opinion but no wrong answers

Re: Breakout player
I'm with you. I think Zeigler has the talent to be an impact player, which should happen in year 2. I thought C. Turner would have a better freshman year and still think he has a lot of talent, so I also wouldn't be surprised if he ends up playing a pretty good role this year, but I don't know if he'll be a "breakout" guy.

Re: Breakout player
I'd say we need Metheny to be an integral part of the team as a PG because we have no other true PG. I thought we might redshirt Young and maybe Fulcher, but that concept has no meaning this year so we have a lot of players to spread minutes across.
I agree JTurner, DPlowden are already breakouts. I think Fields is what he is, good defender and occasional scorer. I think the breakouts will be.............
Necessity
1. Metheny at 1
Likely
2. Matiss K. at 4, 5
3. Diggs at 2 or 3
Need more seasoning but maybe
4. Ziegler at 1 or 2
5. C.Turner if he can find some minutes at 3 or 4
Unknown but hopeful
6. Washington at 5
Expected minutes by position by the time we get to conference play. This is not intended to show starters or second string etc.........just minutes.
5 Jacob Washington(18), Matiss K(12), Dylan Swingle(10)
4 Daeqwon Plowden(28), Matiss K(8), Chandler Turner(2), Cam Young(2)
3 Justin Turner(26), Chandler Turner(10), Trey Diggs(2), Cam Young(2), Isaac Elsasser()
2 Caleb Fields(17), Trey Diggs(18), Davin Ziegler(3), Jo Fulcher(2), Jackson Watson(), Isaac Elsasser()
1 Kaden Metheny(18), Davin Ziegler(14), Justin Turner(6), Jo Fulcher(2), Jackson Watson()
200 Minutes
JTurner(32), Plowden(28), Matiss(20), Diggs(20), Metheny(18), Washington(18), Fields(17), Ziegler(17), CTurner(12), Swingle(10), Fulcher(4), Young(4)

Re: Breakout player
Zeigler. Absolutely. He's the best athlete on the team and guards like a badger. He might not be a true PG, but with his talent, we don't need him to be, especially with the other players on the court.
Also, Kulakovscis. He has a strong all-around game.

Re: Breakout player
I think you guys are sleeping on Swingle. Coaches loved him when they got him. Otherwise I love all the other points.
Re: Breakout player
I hope Chandler Turner can find some regular minutes since he seemed so talented in high school. I'm excited to see what he can do and thought he had a chance to play some last year. Still not sold sold on kuch since he was inconsistent so much from game to game last year but at least one of our bigs has to step up next to plowden if we want to win the mac
Re: Breakout player
I'm not convinced...haven't been that in love with what I've seen. But I was going to chime into this thread to comment that Swingle being a breakout would be the single best breakout guy for this team. Especially since Huger seems absolutely determined to always have a "true 5" on the floor. I really think Mattiss should be playing some "stretch 5" and we just didn't see that much last year.Globetrotter wrote:I think you guys are sleeping on Swingle. Coaches loved him when they got him. Re: Breakout player
The most encouraging thing I got from reading this was that so many different players were mentioned as possibilities. I think that says a lot about the talent and potential of this roster.
Now we just have to hope that, for once, everything goes as we'd dreamed it would -- and that stupid NCAA streak comes to an end.

Yes. I gave my piece on Swingle on a different post but I really think we see some solid production from him this year. If anything, a guy the defense starts to respect enough on the block for the occasional guard collapses, creating more kick outs/open looks for fields/turner/plowden etc.
I mean how awesome would it be if he could just morph into an obviously less athletic but more physically imposing Wiggins? Maybe Kevin Netter lite? We don’t need him to be Matela to have a major impact on this team given how much talent is coming back.

Re: Breakout player
I'd love to see Swingle reach his potential, but I think he needs to get a bit more spry to have a big impact (which, maybe he has this offseason). I think with his body type he could be a Loudon Love type of player (Wright State's star big man) who dominates the post, but Love dropped like 50 lbs and got way stronger each year, which is what I think Swingle would need to do.BPardonMyTake wrote:Globetrotter wrote:I think you guys are sleeping on Swingle. Re: Breakout player
Chandler breaking out would be huge. It would mean Turner would never need to play forward - and no way in hell he should be playing forward.
It would allow us to be pickier about who does get time at the guard slots.
And if another team goes really big on us, we could go Turner, Diggs, C. Turner, Kula and (pick center here).
If CHandler puts on some muscle, he could small ball 4 for us sometimes, too.

I think that we go 3 guards more often than not recently and Chandler isn't much different than Plowden body wise and Plowden plays the 4 for us.Diemilkweed wrote:Chandler breaking out would be huge. Re: Breakout player
It's tough to say definitively, but Chandler didn't look nearly as bulky or with close to the raw athleticism of Plowden in my limited viewing. That said, he was a true freshman and his body could have changed dramatically since we last saw him.Globetrotter wrote:I think that we go 3 guards more often than not recently and Chandler isn't much different than Plowden body wise and Plowden plays the 4 for us.Diemilkweed wrote:Chandler breaking out would be huge. No way Justin Turner is a forward, he's simply the largest guard in an often 3 guard lineup. That does pose an issue though, defensively to be sure.
Re: Breakout player
Cam Young. FR that will be eating minutes
