If you fail to understand why the program is where it is after reading that I can't help you. It's going to take a long time to fix this.
This right here. Of the 24 in the "best class in BG history" of 2017, only 9 remain. There is effectively no senior class and no leadership. Just a few veterans here and there like Clair and Denley who have been around for a long while. The ghost of Mike Jinks is not going away for a while.

And it looks like my creepy stalker is back. For the record I was skeptical of Jinks the moment he was announced. I'll recount a little story from the time. Spring 2016 an old friend of mine and I went out to happy hour, catch up since we live opposite sides of the DC beltway, watch NCAA tournament basketball games and drink some beer. The only one of us who had a team in the tournament was me with Purdue, who had the 5 seed curse and lost to Arkansas Pine Bluff. So we vented about our football programs since we're both football guys anyway. He - Penn State alum - was sure that Franklin was about to get fired and was pushing the program into consistent 6-6 seasons. Franklin had just hired a new OC and he said it stunk of desperation. I said Purdue football needed Hazell gone and gone yesterday but the funds were not there. His recruiting was poor and coordination was worse.

And then BG. And the rant. He asked what I thought of the new coach. I promptly asked for another round.

I said I appreciated the notion of hiring a young guy who could be successful and stick around for a few years rather than bolt after one big season. I said it made sense to go for someone from an offensive pedigree. I said the guy will probably recruit well especially given how young the staff is. But ... why that guy? Why hire the RB coach from Tech? Texas Tech is known for the passing game. The running game is an accessory for their offense. Why not make a run at the OC or at least the QB coach? Why hire a guy with only three years of college experience all at one place? Why a guy who had only ever coached in Texas? And why Texas Tech? Kliff Kingsbury had no hang-your-hat-on wins. Is Tech even a well coached team? I mentioned an interview with the AD Kingston about the hiring process and expressed concern that Kingston was fixated on Jinks the moment he learned about him and didn't give flexibility to see other options.

And then just as concerning was the new staff. They were pretty well finalized by then. I liked what they had to say. They talked a good talk. They were all young and could probably connect with high school players well. But it was a bunch of vertical moves. Nobody came to BG in the same or similar capacity as before. Everyone was going to be learning together on the job. That would make sense at a place like EMU but at a place with the recent success of BG? No. It made no sense.

The old friend asked how I thought it would work out. I said I'll let myself be surprised if it works. But it looked concerning. We changed topics because it was pretty clear I was not happy with the decision at BG.

Penn State won the Big Ten that year. Purdue canned Hazell and hired Brohm. And BG is to this day living with the ramifications of that puzzling hire who ended up far worse than I forsaw. But thankfully that's all in the past. I have always said I like the Loeffler hire because of his wealth of experience working under great coaches and his experience turning BC offense from historically abysmal to competent. But I've also said he is going to have to tough it out for a few years because of the tire fire he inherited. If we're not seeing progress 2021 and 22 then we'll revisit.

This will be better because we have a MUCH better staff Trolls (guest 44)—-never played collegiate sports—-don’t get it——that’s ok.
Clawson was somewhat unique.

Firstly, he had a proven track record with multiple program rebuilds/overhauls. Yeah, it was at FCS level, but he had shown twice that, if given time, he could rebuild a program.

Secondly, he inherited a decent senior class that had underachieved under Brandon, but Clawson immediately put his stamp on the team/program and had a bowl season in his first year. Unfortunately it was built upon a senior class, so we knew that his 2nd year was going to be worse than his first, but still we had seen what he could do as a gameday coach right away...not to mention he also had 8 yrs experience as a head coach already.

And, the biggest difference, even in that 2-10 season Clawson's team was FAR more competitive than Loeffler's team(s) have been. We have lost by 35 & 38 pts this year. We lost 7 games by 39+ last year (5 in conference). Of Loeffler's 11 losses here the closest was an 18 point loss to CMU last year. In Clawson's rough 2010, 4 of the 10 losses were a single possession. The largest loss of the conference season was a 34 point defeat to WMU, with only 2 others over a 20 point margin.

Quite frankly, when I started actually looking up the records in 2010 compared to what Loeffler has put on the field, it's actually far worse by comparison than I expected. Clawson was a [somewhat] proven head coach feeling his way through the MAC while keeping the team mostly competitive even though he had to rebuild a roster with a bunch of defections/scholarhip limits/etc. Loeffler inherited a dumpster fire of a program (totally not his fault) and has (thus far) sat next to it and toasted marshmallows.

I don't see where this team has talent anywhere. Not one position group looks to play at the same speed as KSU or UT.

But the ridiculous amount of procedure penalties and offside penalties are just inexcusable. Well coached teams do not commit 8+ presnap penalties in a half of football.
This is my biggest complain about the games so far. Very undisciplined. My understanding of the Loeffler hire was that he was a stickler for such things. Yet here we are. I can't imagine why any team can be this bad at pre-snap formations in the second game of a season.

I was really hopeful of one win before this game...now I'm wondering if that will happen. Can Akron really be worse than what we're seeing?
A headache with bad teams is fixing one mistake just to make two more. In 2011 just when the team came together to beat Temple and have a path to the championship they laid a dud against Kent and a worse one against NIU. The defense had their worst efforts of the season after their best effort.
In 2017 the offense was 3 and out too much with a low completion percentage, and that's no good for an air raid offense. So we changed QBs. And the competition percentage went up. But then the center had a bunch of bad snaps against MTSU, all drive killers.
Bad teams find new problems. I bet they fix this problem. Then unveil brand new ones next week.

I think we all were. Some of us were being more polite about it than others.

That was some tough football to watch last night. The offensive play is a bit improved, but they have a long way to go. At times our defenders made plays but they also got beat badly at times. The penalties, including all those offsides calls, were frustrating to watch.

The reality seems to be that we are trying to beat actual FBS college football teams with a ton of freshmen, and it shows. After the game, Coach Loeffler kept emphasizing that the kids need to hit that weight room, and that he has had them hitting the weights more in season than he can ever remember. He's basically telling us: Look guys, it's men against boys out there, and it will take some time before we can go toe-to-toe, man-to-man with anybody.

(Perhaps Akron will be an exception. We'll see.)

I've been following this team more than 30 years and I can't ever remember a period where Bowling Green was this outmatched. Moe Ankney never put together a winning season in five years, but his teams always won some games. He always had some talent.

Mike Jinks put this program in the worst place it has ever been. It's going to take time to rebuild.

It's absolutely men against boys. A well disciplined zero mistake team would still be getting beaten soundly, and that's why I'll express my concerns but not jump off a bridge just yet. The new staff has done nothing to minimize my concerns, but I don't think we've ever seen a BG team with this sort of talent discrepancy compared to our conference brethren. It's baaaad.

I totally understand why we're giving 10 yard cushions on 3rd & 10. We quite simply cannot run with KSU or UT. Our defense looks like it's in quicksand compared to the opposition. That's real tough to overcome. However, if I had a question to ask at the next DC presser, I would absolutely be asking for clarification on the announcers' point that he wants his guys to fly up and "take their shot." That is quite simply, absurd; it's the polar opposite of any defensive coach I've ever heard. Even when they MAKE the big hits, you cringe because you know a player playing out of control (and I saw several last night). Instead you want a guy in control, get to the spot, break down, and make the tackle. It's what every defensive coach I've ever heard emphasizes, and I hope that the announcers were simply missing what he tried to express to them.

Fair enough, then just admit you are a bit skeptical now after 5 straight losses by 35 to MAC teams. It's ok. Feel free to criticize this athletic department. They deserve it. You were skeptical of the Jinks hire, and Kingston's right hand man was all over this hire. It's ok to be skeptical.

44, if you believe I think everything is green grass and blue skies, you are sorely mistaken. Here's the indicator that just pisses me off. I thought yesterday until checking that our game against Kent was tonight. (Maybe the team thought the same).

The last time I made that mistake was the season finale of 2017. The worst season in recent memory. I always know who we play next and when, and I didn't yesterday and I'm not sure who we play next and when. I can say I made the mistake because the season is weird due to covid, or because I'm a busy man with a family and managing some home renovation. But I'm lying to myself. I didn't know because I don't have the same drive for BG football right now. And that's a damned shame. BG football needs to get out of this rut and I sure hope Loeffler is the guy.

The only person on this board who is happy today is you. You are hoping for failure. Failure is your agenda. You are only here to sow chaos and discontent.

Ok, I recently posted I’d be willing to wait on our QB play...one game ( UT) wasn’t enough for a kid who hadn’t played for 2 yrs.
But 6/20? And we don’t get a backup into a blowout game? We need to see what we’ve got, or don’t have in the QB room. Last nite I saw overthrows, underthrows, worm burners etc. but very few solid, on the money passes.
If for no other reason I think we need to get some other kids in the game.

I would agree, but his stats didn't reflect his actual throws, either. There were at least 5 on-target throws that were completely dropped with no excuse. Some of those were drive killers. Quintin Morris needs to figure out how to catch consistently; as a former receiver, I would expect more from him. Moving him to TE was a great decision because he's a matchup problem for any team, but if he's going to drop half of the passes thrown his way then nobody is going to be scared of him.

I actually saw improvement from McDonald from the UT game to the Kent game. I don't think the QB play is the main issue with this team. I think the main issue with this team is a lack of discipline and fundamentals. The defense apparently cannot stay onside, the receivers cannot catch, the line cannot block, and we cannot seem to make consistent tackles. Couple that with injuries to key players already mounting, and we're lucky we put up 24 points. There are 90 different things to blame all of this on: COVID, lack of player development over the years, attrition of recruiting classes, and poor coaching. Only the last one centers on the current coach, and I would argue that all of our team problems were here before Loeffler came. He hasn't made huge strides in making things better, but I know he hasn't made things worse.

I noticed our offense is different this year than it was last year. We're now running the offense he wants to run. This offense is more of a run first offense and I like that. It will be hard to beat the power conference teams with that offense, but we can dominate the MAC.

Right now I'm looking at Akron and Miami. I want to see us beat Akron. I want to see us be in the game against Miami with a chance to beat them; if we beat them, even better. We have Buffalo and Ohio next. Buffalo will probably be ugly (28+ point loss). I think we'll lose to OU by 20. I see us beating Akron by 7 and then the Miami game will be a 10 point game.

What’s scary with your ideas is that Akron gave OU a heck of a fight before losing by TWO scores. Granted OU May be finally down a bit , new QB ( same last name). But Akron must’ve played respectable defense too.
We’ve given up 100 pts in 2 games....nuff said.
