Akron Game
Re: Akron Game
I'm curious what the boards for Akron football look like. Akron's last two seasons have been significantly worse than BG, and they actually had some stability with Terry Bowden up until his last season. Are they all after Tom Arth's head, even though he was widely regarded as a homerun hire?

Re: Akron Game
Speaking of Bowden, what the heck happened? They won the MAC east in 2017, granted the worst divison of a conference in FBS history. Then in 2018 they beat Northwestern who eventually won the Big Ten west. They went 4-8, 2-6 that year, not exactly disaster. So what happened and why did Bowden get canned? For anyone who knows Akron football better than me I'd like to know.
And we at least have an excuse for stinking. Previous coach also fired in 2018 killed the program. A MAC east champ and a win over a Big 10 team is more than Jinks ever got. Heck, Bowden gave Akron a win over Pitt and their first bowl win in history along the way. Bowden was fired for 4-8. That was Jinks' best record.
I guess what I'm saying is Loeffler's mess is Jinks' mess, at least for now. If the mess continues for future years then I'll expand blame of mess. But Arth's mess, I fail to see how that is anyone's but his. I'd be pissed if I were an Akron fan.

Re: Akron Game
The wheels fell off in his final season. They were 4-3 and in position to repeat their division title, but lost their final five games to end up 4-8. New AD was there and wanted his own coach, so the collapse gave him ammo to do it. Has been a massive mistake.MarkL wrote:Speaking of Bowden, what the heck happened? The longer the walk, the farther you crawl.

Got it. Power play by AD. Too bad because Bowden really did pretty well rebuilding after the Ianello fiasco. If I were an Akron fan I would be on the AD constantly.

Bowden was disliked internally because his methodology was the win now approach, using JC plug ins. Lots of misfits there. Eventually the cupboard will be bare.... they couldn’t fire him because he got wins. The cupboard is now bare.MarkL wrote:Speaking of Bowden, what the heck happened? It’s not my point of view, it’s a fact.
Re: Akron Game
Actually you would likely make excuses for the AD like you do Bob Moosbrugger. Then once he is gone speak about his failures like this board does Kingston. The JUCO route might be what works best for Akron. They also took on transfers and in some situations it worked. They have no tradition, no history, and most of the success they have had is taking advantage of incompetent hires by BGSU and Miami, the schools who do have some tradition.

I presume you are talking to me; or, maybe one of the voices in your head? I couldn’t care less what Akron does or how they do it... I do know that what I noted about Bowden is correct.guest44 wrote:Actually you would likely make excuses for the AD like you do Bob Moosbrugger. FYI on Akron (the school you state has "no history") per Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akron_Zips_football:guest44 wrote:They have no tradition, no history, and most of the success they have had is taking advantage of incompetent hires by BGSU and Miami, the schools who do have some tradition.
In 1893, the college hired John Heisman to become the football and baseball coach. Heisman lead Buchtel to their first winning season with a 5–2 record in 1893, and then led them to their first undefeated season, albeit a single game season in which they defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes.[10] While at Buchtel, Heisman also helped invent the snap, which is still used in modern-day football.[10] The early years for Buchtel saw many coaching changes, as the program went through nine different coaches in the 22-year span. Buchtel College changed its name to the University of Akron in 1913.[11]
John Heisman served as their coach, they are the only MAC school to beat Ohio State and the birthplace of the snap to start offensive plays is pretty impressive history in my eyes.

Imagine the energy pulsing thru InfoCision Stadium right now....both teams knowing they are about to play in one of the worst matchups in the history of college football.
Butterflies just thinking about it.

These teams look like they're duking it out for the #1 pick.
Re: Akron Game
BG gets a stop, but fumbles the punt and Akron takes over at the BG 11.
BG makes 3 plays in a row defensively, and forces 3 instead of 7.
3-0 Akron.

Re: Akron Game
BG had a really nice drive right back down the other way to tie it at 3. We sputtered inside the 10 after a sack on 2nd down (if I'm looking at the stats correctly, that's only the 8th given up in 5 games - pretty darn impressive, considering we though the QB would get killed every game this year), and settled for a FG.
McDonald was 5/5 for 47 yards on the 16-play, 61 yard opening scoring drive that took over 8 minutes off the clock.
