Is Dakich nearsighted? Vandermeer rant.
Scott was sitting in the middle of the bench but it seems that Dakich looked right past him.
He played 4 minutes in the first, probably 2 by accident on a substitution, and sat the rest of the game.
Yep, Dakich, loser coach of the year.

Absolutely rediculous that Vandemeer and Lefeld don't play more...teams would love to have those guys and we don't use them to our advantage. Vandemeer got a charging call early in the game and never came back in...Lefeld never plays after playing quite a bit last year. Don' t know what he's thinking.
A group of us have wondered about the brace/support/whatever on Lefeld's leg for sometime and whether that factors into his (lack) of playing time. I was shocked to see VanderMeer start on Senior Day, but to only play 4 minutes. Of course, I wasn't there, so perhaps the box score doesn't translate something? Dan's subsitution patterns have always been erratic, but that's not what costs us games (at least most of the time and certainly not today).

He is thinking that somtime in this century that Corey Eyink will take and actually make a shot.cowboyjoe wrote:Absolutely rediculous that Vandemeer and Lefeld don't play more...teams would love to have those guys and we don't use them to our advantage. Dakich doesn't have any damned idea how he'll substitute until he does it. Agreed, Lefeld's and Vandermeer's lack of playing time is stupid beyond belief. I've never understood how Eyink could be in the rotation in front of either one of them. The thickheadedness is getting hard to stomach.cowboyjoe wrote:Absolutely rediculous that Vandemeer and Lefeld don't play more...teams would love to have those guys and we don't use them to our advantage. Traditionally, I've always awaited recruiting & signing announcements with intense eagerness. I've reached a point where I almost DON'T CARE about DD's recruiting because there's such a high probability of good young players transferring out. It doesn't matter who we sign because we'll end up watching players who mirrored DD's own playing style on the floor.
As I read this board I just wish I was insightful as some of the other fans. I guess being a middle aged man who might have played some high school ball at best makes one a great "coach". Some of the same people that had trashed some of the guys when they were signed as being slow or weak are now able to say they have matured into players that should be all americans if dakich would just give them a chance. If you really think that Dakich would not play them if he thought they would give him the best chance of winning you are severely mistaken. I have seen enough games to know what is of the utmost importance to him and it is winning. It's too bad that as we age the only bit of mans athletic ability that stays the same or increases is our ability to jump to conclusions.

You know, some people just won't be happy. I believe before this season started, I kept reading how Coach Dakich needed to go and he was too hard, and all the good players are leaving, and that we were going to have a bad year. And now, then everybody during this season has been stating that coach has done a good job, and now that we lose a game that we shouldn't have, people are finding a reason to complain about the coach again. Not every game goes as planned, and sometimes the better team loses. I'm sure Coach Dakich has a substitution plan going into the game, but those things change during the game as situations come and go. I know how hard it is to trust kids at that age to come out and play every day the way they are capable of playing. Being at the junior college level on the girls side, I know it is a little different, but an athlete is an athlete, and sometimes a team just doesn't bring their best game, no matter how hard the coach works, or what he says or does to try to get them motivated. I don't think we need to criticize the coach for really doing a great job with the guys he has this year. Some kids don't fit into the system that coach runs, and don't like his style, and that's fine, but it is his team, and I personally think he is doing a very good job. If you think you can do better, than get into the profession and replace him by working hard at it and telling the athletic department that you can win more than he can.
Well, from an old-timer, I can only tell you that the only coach that nobody ever really jumped on was Andy Anderson ----- he seemed to combine all the ingredients, i.e., the recruiting tools, the coaching tools, and the winning record. Weinert always had good material, i.e., he recruited well, but didn't always take advantage of the talent that he had. I can remember Fredie Bryant always sitting on the bench and everyone wondered why. When he finally made his debute his senior year, he lit up the league --- extraordinary player. J. Smith (the Central M. Coach) was another case in point. This kid was a brilliant shooter. Whenever he got into a game (which wasn't often) he immediately took command and lit up the score board. Weinert acted like he could wait to get him back on the bench. Larrenaga (sp) could recruit like hell, but couldn't coach worth a didly (at least at BG). Lost many a game that I think even I could have won by changing defenses as well as players. Dakich seems to be able to coach (he certainly yaks about his system enough), but can't seem to recruit the hot-ones. Now and then, yes (McCloud), but often when he does land a good one, they transfer out. --- Losing to Central was not excusable with so much on the line.

In fairness to DD, early in the game Vandermeer did a "Floyd flop" on a defensive play near the basket. Then he picked up a charge trying to roll to the basket from outside the key.
We need him to play HIS game, not Netter's. On defense, that means blocking the shot or comitting the foul, not passively trying to draw the charge. On offense that means establish yourself in the low post or coming out to set screens. We don't need 6'-11'" guys putting the ball on the floor.
I realize that he may have the skills need to develop an offensive game facing the basket, but that day is not today and we have other guys that can do that now.
As for why he sat the rest of the way...I don't know, maybe he didn't look like he was ready on the bench. A coach can tell a lot about where a player is by looking him the eye.

Cole Magner? Dang I thought the heading was talking about vandemeer and lefeld. I better go pick up a set of hooked on phonics worked for me. You are absolutely right though, he was the best football player we had on our team. I am just soo glad he chose to play football here at BG as opposed basketball at duke or north carolina. I know that eyink missed a couple of shots at the end of the game but when i looked at the box score for the game I saw he had the lead for assists and tied for lead with rebounds. I think if we all saw John have a 5 to 1 assist to turnover ratio we would be pretty pleased. I will be the first to admit Scott has some serious upside in terms of shot blocking capabilty. However if there is one thing coach will do it is play to his best matchup. That is why some games Scott sees more time against a team with big men and less time versus a smaller, quicker team. Also, I am sorry to say I dont smoke so I cant help you out there. From the cohesiveness of your post in jumping from vendemeer and lefeld to cole magner I would guess you already smoked enough for the day.
