I can give Fulcher and Young a pass as Freshmen but Ziegler went into this offseason knowing he had to develop his skill offensively and so far he hasn't shown it. FIelds has.

I can't get over how ready Metheny is as a freshman, I think we got a steal with him. On top of his skill he is physically strong, doesn't look like a freshman.

I see 3 flaws with Matheny:

1) his handles aren't QUITE up to the challenge that D1 ahtlets provide yet. He clearly is accustomed to be able ot do things on the attack that he cannot quite pull off on this stage yet, resulting in minor fumbles. BUT, he keeps getting it back under control instead of turning it over. So he's very close to being good on that score.

2) His defense is too basic right now. He gets faked badly by upperclassmen a couple times a game, and gets beat pretty regularly. NOT for lack of effort. Dude is on fire with the effort - but has not yet learned how to read players at this level - this will get better with time.

3) He's short. And there's not a bloody thing to do about that. If he was 6-1, I doubt we'd have him. So I'll live with it :)

I agree if he's 6'1" he's playing for Huggins. I see the same thing with his occasional turnover, which should improve over time. I'm saying comparatively over the years as a freshman he's one of the readiest in terms of a complete game to contribute I've seen out of BG in a while.

If we didn't have so many quality guards Fulcher and Metheny would start 4 years here. That's an awesome recruiting class. Young is raw but I expect that from a freshman. I hope we add some games between the Wright St game and the next to play Turner and Zeigs and Young as much as possible.

Zeigler is uber-talented but seems to be pressing himself, like he's trying toooo hard. So, he'll throw himself into situations and force things. I have no idea what his off-season regiman was.

Let's remember that he's still very inexperienced. He didn't crack the rotation until well into Feb last year.

I was a junior falcon David Greer's senior year :)

Broke my hand before the season ended and couldn't do the last 6 games or so and the tourney.

OU bringing their f-ing BAND to the final and displacing a couple hundred of our students from the student section pisses me off to this day.

We 100% should have gone to the NCAA that year.[/quote]

GAHHHH! I remember that effing band. I was sitting in Section J, Row 4 right behind them.

Hmmmm. You were a year behind David Greer, huh? I'll have to hunt through my old game programs to find out who you are. ;)

I got drunk with Colin Irish. Well, I got drunk and he watched me. We had a great conversation. At least I thought it was great.

No - I was a "jr falcon" - one of the pre-teen kids who runs out and wipes up the floor when sweaty bodies hit it.

I had people telling me well into adulthood that they remembered me because

A) I was the only "ballboy" as tall as any of the players - I was the same height as Greer. And I was 5-7. So his 5-9 is alleged.

B) I terrified people all the time because I would stay out on the court getting the floor DRY even as they started fast breaks my way.

I watched Colin Irish get his knee destroyed by a wet floor. I wasn't letting that happen on my watch.

And our guys got used to it and would just go full steam ahead - they knew I would clear out in time :)

Great point. Due to the "1 and done" culture of CBB today we tend to expect more out of freshmen and sophomores, but ziegler is just a sophomore with all of this season and 2 more to develop.

When I first watched Ziegler, my rwaction was "its about time we get one of these guys that Kent and Akron always get". By that I mean hyper-athletic PG that comes off the bench, very raw but will have short stretches in big games where he can single handedly orchestrate a 6-10 point run (kind of like we would see Laster do at times the past 2 years) and then round out his skills to be a consistent contributor as a junior and senior, with All-MAC ceiling.

Personally I'm excited about the kid's potential, and most excited that we are so deep that we dont have to rely on him as a sophomore.
LONG LIVE THE MONGOOSE!!
