Signing Day Thread

Post by BillyLP »

Figured it was worth having a new thread to chime in on today's signing day.

It doesn't look like there were any surprises today, for better or for worse. I think it looks like a strong class with some great size and skill on the o-line, in particular. I also like the depth that was added for cornerbacks and safeties.

Some specific signees that I think look like impact players:
Jaison Patterson, RB
Tae'Shaun Johnson, WR
Chase Whatton, DE
Willie Jones, DB
Alex Padgett, OL
BG '10

Attended more games than any responsible student should have.

24/7 has this as the 8th best class in the conference. Total recruits will be down a bit due to the eligibility rule and that BG stocked up in 2020.

Also, looking through a few more of the videos, I think Diego Neri could be a great player at LB. Needs a bit of time in the weight room, but the guy has great form, has a nose for the ball, and hits hard.

Gunther, Neri, Patterson, and Russell are all scheduled to enroll in January according to Nick P on Twitter.

Good news. Which there were a couple OL or DL in that group. Watching Gunther's high school tape, he didn't have the strongest arm, but was accurate with a quick release. I'll be interested to see if he competes for the job.

That 247 site is all jacked up. We signed 21, and several on our 247 list are not signing (the QB). Not sure if it will recompute rankings after dust settles. That said, 247 rankings at this level in particular are totally meaningless. All they do is add up stars, never watched a film on any of them. Tourist bait, as they say.
It’s not my point of view, it’s a fact.

It seems like this year, especially. I agree they are bait-y, in general, but they are at least a bit more active on the rankings and more accurate on commits/decommits, typically. I'm sure due to the impact of COVID on high school sports.

We haven't had a tall dominant receiver since Gehrig Deiter. So a 6'5 receiver sounds good to me.

Who would tall WR be?

Anyone else notice all the kids with first names beginning with 'J'?

7 of 22 in this class including two Jaylen and one Jalen.
25 others on the current roster.

Jaedyn McKinstry. I've seen him listed as WR or TE. Thinking WR at 6-5 210.

We have Javonte Kinsey (6'5), Noah Massey (6'4) and Ty Broden (6'4) on the roster. Not sure if they will blossom into a dominant receiver but we have tried to find tall receivers for a while.

Edit: If we had a QB the last 2 years, maybe they would be on their way to being much better. Tough to tell when we complete so few passes per game.

In his media avail today, Loeffler said the emphasis for the next (2022) class will be speed, speed, speed. He felt good about the WRs we got, but said speed will be a huge priority, finding young men who can come in and play right away. He said he emphasized offensive linemen more the first couple of classes because they take longer to develop.

(At least that's how I interpreted what he was saying.)

NCAA is allowing blanket approval for transfers. I have to think the transfer portal will be busy. Good time to try and bring in some veterans who can contribute and lead.

Great kid in elementary when I met Jaedyn and I firmly believe he's the kind of student/athlete you want to represent BGSU. He struggled with cancer last year and was granted a rare 5th year by OHSAA. I will be rooting for him to make it big at BG. I think he might be the steal of the class.
