@ Ohio (12/30)
@ Ohio (12/30)
After COVID-19 postponed 2 our next 3 contests (at Kent State and at Miami), the MAC announced that our new opponents are @ Ohio on 12/30 and vs. Central Michigan on 1/5. Kinda weird, but the league is going to juggle things and get stuff rescheduled.
So, we'll take on the Ohio Bobcats (4-3, 0-1) next, instead, on 12/30 at 2:00pm in Athens, OH. No TV broadcast has been announced yet, but I'd bet on this game being played on ESPN3 or ESPN+.
OU has had an up and down season so far, nearly upsetting Illinois in Champaign (losing 77-75) and then proceeding to blow out Cleveland State, 101-46. They're a talented team, picked to finish 2nd in the MAC, so this should be a pretty good challenge for us. If we can go on the road and beat this team, we'll be 2-0 in the MAC.
Go Falcons - Beat Ohio!

Nick from the Blade just reported that Matiss suffered a setback in his recovery and he’s now expected to miss the whole season. Just a brutal blow.

Is this game not on TV?
Re: @ Ohio (12/30)
Unfortunately, no stream of the game
https://www.ohiobobcats.com/sports/mbkb ... 1229f6u66oDue to the late addition, the holiday closure and lack of available students on campus to help out, the game will not be streamed.

It's almost like having an entire television contract and conference policy be reliant on free students to do all the work is a foolish one, eh?Eagle66 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 29, 2020 10:31 am Unfortunately, no stream of the game

Have to believe this sort of stuff is going to happen even more as the year goes on. Really sucks if we cannot get to watch the games either after we're unable to attend them.

Crazy they can’t pay cameramen and engineers considering how good of a TV deal they have with ESPN?

I guess the only source of labor is from free student help? And without free student help, the university is paralyzed by the unsurmountable challenge of finding other people to help (that might require payment)? Is this just a complete lack of imagination, or is it simply corporate greed?

Naturally, this has NO mention on bgsufalcons.com.

To be fair, I don't think many college programs are very forthright with this type of information. When it comes to injuries, that stuff is more private in the college game. So I understand not posting about it, to be fair to the kid.

Can Bowling Green use the Frack money to pay for a camera person, now that the recruiting budget is under control?

Guest - the game is at Ohio tomorrow. It has nothing to do with BG.

Re: @ Ohio (12/30)
The MAC contract with ESPN requires the MAC to publish a certain number of events every year across all sports. It also requires the schools to foot ALL of the expenses. The schools produce the content, they supply the cameras, the camera operators, the commentators, etc. From what I've been able to discern over the years (and it's tough because the MAC knows they're taking it in the ass and don't want it public) ESPN basically gives them the uplink to upload the video feed and literally everything else is at the expense of the schools.BleedOrange wrote: ↑Tue Dec 29, 2020 2:50 pmhammb wrote: ↑Tue Dec 29, 2020 12:23 pmIt's almost like having an entire television contract and conference policy be reliant on free students to do all the work is a foolish one, eh?Eagle66 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 29, 2020 10:31 am Unfortunately, no stream of the game

This game is, obviously, at OU. Home teams handle all of the aforementioned infrastructure and labor. Given that I have watched games in almost every MAC arena now it is clear that a large percentage of the MAC schools are relying on students to do all of that work. It is a fantastic opportunity for students in media programs, no doubt or argument about it. It's great that they get to leave with that experience. Given OU's strong media school I'm quite certain that they, perhaps more than anybody, are completely reliant on that program to supply all of the labor to produce a ball game. I do know that some schools (Akron always has Reghi which is awesome) do actually hire people to do the games, but it's obvious that it's 80+% students. Camera work is clearly people learning, commentators clearly are learning (and heavily biased), etc.
But yeah, seems ridiculous that in the absence of students on campus they couldn't find somebody to come in and work the game. There has to be somebody in the local media that could operate some cameras and a sports guy that would call the game. I'm sure we're not talking about thousands of dollars either. Obviously they'd need whoever typically leads the production (most likely a media instructor would be my guess) to help train and coordinate, but it doesn't seem like it'd be THAT difficult to pull off. It's not like we just found out today that the game was happening today either. It's been known for 5-6 days.
Just another in a long list of reasons to be frustrated by the MAC
