vs. CMU (1/5 & 1/9)

Post by mbenecke »

Following our blowout win over Northern Illinois on Saturday, our Falcons (7-2, 3-0) will return to the Stroh Center to take on the Central Michigan Chippewas (5-4, 1-1) on Tuesday, January 5 at 6:00pm, and then we'll turn right around and head to Mount Pleasant to play them again on Saturday, January 9 at 4:30pm. The games should be available for broadcast on ESPN3 or ESPN+.

Central Michigan has had an up and down season so far. They were picked to finish 11th in the MAC in the preseason poll, and they’ve been playing .500 basketball to this point. Their results this year have been a little perplexing. On their resume, they have multiple wins by nearly 60 points, but they also suffered a 19-point loss to something called Flagler College back in December. In addition, they lost to Western Michigan, the team picked to finish last in the MAC, by 15 points.

So I guess we’ll see. These are games we should certainly win, but we’ll need to play smart basketball to get it done, beginning with our first home game in over 3 weeks. Here’s hoping they start fast and play well throughout both contests.

Go Falcons - Beat CMU!

It would be nice to start out wit ha little 10 point lead and then never look back. Maybe even get outscored by a bit in the 2nd half because we are playing the end of the bench extended time.

That would be nice.

But I'll take "explodes in the 2nd half so hard the other team fires their coach afterwards" if we have to.

I edited the original post to reflect the following news:

The MAC announced today that BG and CMU will play again on Saturday to complete their season series together. Our return trip to CMU was originally scheduled to take place on January 23, but that date will now be open, more than likely so that we can make up a game with either Miami or Kent State. The schedule is shifting like crazy right now, but the team is doing their best to deal with it. What a weird, wild season.

Ay Ziggy Zoomba!

I believe CMU is not a good team. They have a ton of transfers and JUCOs. They are big with 5 guys at 6'9" and above so that may prove somewhat difficult. However, their 6-4 record is not that respectable when you check the schedule. They started out losing 3 straight including one against some team called Flagler College. Western beat them pretty easily but they did the same to EMU in Ypsi. Two more wins are over lowly Division II or III schools by a total of 113 points .If the game was in Mt. Pleasant there could be problems iprovided we played down to their level but there should be little problem at the Stroh.

GAME 1:

15:36 left in the first half, BG leads 9-7... I think. They've been having an issue with the score bug on the screen, but that's the last score they flashed.

Regardless, solid start. Swingle is progressing nicely as the season moves along - his touch around the rim has become an asset for this team. Nice three-ball from Fields, as well.

Quick 5-0 run puts BG up 14-7 and forces a CMU timeout.

Justin Turner is 6 points away from passing Antonio Daniels for 4th on the BGSU career scoring list.

18 of CMU's first 22 points came in the paint.

We should never play with both Swingle and Plowden off the floor. I like Washington's game, and I think he should see more time out there, but he's not really a backup 5 option, to me.

With a little over 6 minutes left in the first half, BG leads 33-22.

Cam Young and Josiah Fulcher have both hit threes in this game. Really like what I've seen from them, in limited action.

Cam Young has been really impressive tonight. he has 8 points off the bench, he's saved 2 loose balls, and he's deflected a shot. Really nice stuff, from the freshan.

With 3:44 left in the first half, BG leads 38-27.

HALFTIME: Falcons lead, 46-36. Strong offensive performance in the first 20. Let's bring it home in the 2nd half.

CMU hit 3 or 4 high speed sky-hook layups from 5+ feet away from the rim.

We missed 4 or 5 layups right at the rim.

Regress those to the mean and we are up 15-20 instead of 10.

Also - here is that nice little 10 point lead I wanted. Let's blow their doors off in the 1st 10 minutes and really let the young guys have some quality time.

Jordan Strack receives this statement mid game...

In other words, please don't ask the coach what happened? We don't want anyone to look bad since people are curious.

One of the announcers in the game said it - and then they scooted right on with no explanation. Kind of forced their hand.
