vs. Bemidji State (1/7-1/8)

Post by mbenecke »

Following a weekend sweep of Ferris State, our 7th-ranked Falcons now return home to battle the Bemidji State Beavers (2-3-2) inside the Slater Family Ice Arena on Thursday, January 7 and Friday, January 8. Each game is slated to begin at 7:07pm EST, and they will both be broadcast on https://www.flohockey.tv/.

Bemidji comes in off a non-league split with Lake Superior, winning 4-1 and tying (and losing in OT) 2-2. Last year, this team swept us in late January/early February, and then we were to see them again in the WCHA semifinals before COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the rest of the season. We've lost once since that series at their place in the regular season. So, I'd bet the boys have a little extra motivation for this series, to prove we're better than them. We know this program well - they' pay as physical as anyone in college hockey, they get solid goal-tending, and they defend like hell. We're going to have to be sharp to beat them this weekend.

Goaltender Stats:

BGSU
Sr. Eric Dop... GAA - 1.84, SV% - .929, 6–0-0
So. Zack Rose... GAA - 1.35, SV% - .937, 5-1-0

Bemidji State
Sr. Zach Driscoll… GAA - 2.74, SV% - .915, 2-3-2

Go Falcons - Beat Bemidji State!

Nope, not yet. Stayed at 7. I had seen that Duluth and St. Cloud split their series, but while they both added a loss to their resume, they also added a top 5 win. So I can at least understand it.

Whereas last week, we were behind 6th place by 65 poll points, it's only 20 this week. So the gap is closing. And those teams actually play each other again this weekend, so I like our chances to move up with an impressive showing against Bemidji.

Here's what I have for rankings.

USCHO: #7
USA Today: #6
Buccigross Top 16: #5
CHN Power 16: #7
Reddit r/collegehockey fan poll: #6
USCHO Pairwise: #3
CHN Pairwise: #2
USCHO/CHN KRACH: Infinity - can't calculate as long as there are teams with zero losses (MN)

Yes, I know the pairwise this year is meaningless, no need to mention it.

Edit: Updated CHN Power 16 ranking.
Edit: Updated Reddit fan poll.

Weird Thursday night game tonight.

I'm excited to see this team play once again. Bemidji will be tough, so it's on our guys to set the tone early tonight.

I have to take a step back from the craziness of the world now and applaud your weekly write ups. From week to week you continue to be unphazed from COVID or anything else. You still put those Rosie Orange and Brown glasses on and paint us readers a beautiful picture and amazing sense of prosperity.

I have to admit I've gotten on here and with my rosie colored orange and brown glasses I've had tunnel vision at times and I've been negative and point fingers a few times after tough losses or seasons. But you continue to keep it positive and put everyone back on the rails as our objective is to cheer on the Falcons. Thank you for that. Not even sure if your legal, but at some point we can share a beer in the stands and sing ay ziggy zomba after a victory.

Go Falcons

Big series with conference standing implications. Bemidji always plays BG tough too. Should be a tight series.

At nearly 23 years young now, I’ll take you up on that in the future. For now, we drink from our homes - and as long as the Falcons keep winning, that’s alright with me. Cheers! Go BG!

GOAL! Schneider responds with a nice goal about a minute later. Really nice bounce back from BG there.
