Don't fall for it again Bob. If he wants that dog poop job, let him have it. Remember the 750K the department doesn't have. Don't offer the raise or extension again.

Re: Don't fall for it again Moose
Haha...just tweeted back to Jordan something to this very effect. That and also urging Jordan Strack to speak it into existence if he can. I'd like the local media to do whatever they possibly can to make Huger look like the most attractive up and coming coach in the country. This is probably our one shot to get rid of Huger before that contract expires.

Wouldn't the buyout of his contract help with that 750k?guest44 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 04, 2021 11:24 am https://twitter.com/JordanStrack/status ... 73286?s=20

Re: Don't fall for it again Moose
Of course it would. Best case scenario. The fear is Moose doing what he did when his name was floated for the George Washington job. A huge raise and unnecessary extension while media types like Strack tell everyone how wonderful of a job he has done. He has a 52-55 career record in MAC play.
Re: Don't fall for it again Moose
From what I’m hearing, I think Moose is more worried about his own contract than offering an extension to Huger.
I’d be shocked if you see any type extension to keep him around...I think they’ll let him walk

Re: Don't fall for it again Moose
Is his contract up?
Considering what he's done for the 2 real revenue sports, I'd find it tough to justify keeping him around. The dept as a whole has been a clusterf*** as long as I've been a fan, but they've managed to have periods of success on the football field despite that. But Moose's hire of Loeffler is looking like a Jinks level disaster and extending Huger unnecessarily (with a large raise to boot) looks even worse.
Not to mention any COVID related difficulties to compound it.
I would love nothing more than to get a Hoops minded AD here (ha, yeah right, #1 job qualification will always be trying to breathe life into a s**t football situation). Get somebody in here willing to use that Frack money for its intended purpose. Get somebody willing to work the contacts and find good young basketball coaches. The past couple years have shown, if the program can win, we can fill that building. And with the Frack money, a fanbase capable of filling the arena, and that beautiful facility. If the dept would actually commit to it there is no reason we cannot be at the top of the conference every year.
Just need the right leadership
Re: Don't fall for it again Moose
He was hired in May of 2016, and I've read that he had a 5-year contract at some point. Theoretically he could be nearing his time for an extension?
I'm personally in the camp that feels like Bob has done a pretty good job here, though obviously more-so in the non-revenue sports. Maybe I'm biased because I had a lunch meeting with him as a freshman his first year on campus, but I feel like what he's done here has been pretty good stuff. The Fralick hire was a homerun. Matt Fannon was great, and it seems like Jimmy Walker will be fantastic, as well. Volleyball has become a powerhouse (though Coach Tomic wasn't his hire, obviously). Eigner has kept the hockey program operating at a high level, and we'll see what happens once this huge senior class leaves.
Men's soccer, women's soccer, women's hoops, volleyball, and hockey are all competing for conference titles. Is the department really in that bad of shape? Or do people just think that because football and men's basketball are mediocre-to-bad? I legitimately am curious.

Also worth pointing out that this kind of basketball season was a dream only 6 or 7 years ago. This season has been disappointing but this is also the coach that has lead the program to back-to-back 20 win seasons for the first time since god knows when.mbenecke wrote: ↑Thu Mar 04, 2021 2:53 pm He was hired in May of 2016, and I've read that he had a 5-year contract at some point. EDIT: Looked it up. First consecutive 20-win seasons since 1949.

A 14-10, 6th place at best finish was a dream 6-7 years ago? This dream is much better than the 7 years too many of Louis Orr. Huger got an extension because Louis Orr was so bad, now folks are calling Huger's 52-55 MAC record a dream? Yikes

LOL It's God's WHEEL. Shrugs shoulders.
I'm going to be sad that Plowden is leaving. Turner, not so much. True he can control a game, but it seems lately, especially when the all-time men's scoring leadership was on the line, he became somewhat selfish. Also, the Pandemic blues, or Huger's lack of renting a big man, sucked. Maybe no one was available, but how can Toledo go to Division II and grab a body capable of playing in the MAC and we can't find a big man for a year?

Re: Don't fall for it again Moose
Well as far as I'm concerned the BG athletic department IS Football, Basketball, and hockey. Those 3 sports are worth more than all the other sports combined in my mind. Of that group of top sports men's football and men's basketball are the only ones I actually follow. The revenue (and expenditures) on these sports tend to re-enforce that line of thinking. If we are going to look beyond the big sports, I think the handling of the baseball situation is as big a black eye on the Dept. as anything good that has been accomplished in any non-revenue sports.
I don't really think it's fair to say a basketball season like this was "only a dream" either. We're 14-10, 10-8 in the MAC. Those records are better than Orr's typical season of being slightly below .500, but I'd hardly call it a dream season. Especially in a year where we were the unanimous choice to win the league. Last year we were also picked to win the league, lost our final 3 games, and were slated as underdogs in the MAC quarterfinals before they got canceled. Hell, the season that got Huger his extension we fell on our face down the stretch before making the run in the tournament.
Yeah, Huger scheduled his way to back to back 20 win seasons. He's still a meh 102-85 overall, and only 53-55 in MAC play. These numbers look good compared to Orr, but given our facility and our endowment this is not nearly good enough. Jans showed you how easily a GOOD coach can come in here and win right away. At no point in the 6 years here has Huger's team ever looked as well coached as Jans team did in his 1 season.

Re: Don't fall for it again Moose
The problem with Jans (aside from being handsy) was that the whole team hated him and about half were going to transfer out before he got fired anyway. He was a mini-Gregg Marshall without the resume back then.hammb wrote: ↑Thu Mar 04, 2021 3:42 pm Yeah, Huger scheduled his way to back to back 20 win seasons. It remains infuriating and inexcusable that Huger has only used his NCAA scholarship limit ONE TIME! It's like he gets a bonus for saving the money? Makes zero sense at all.
Re: Don't fall for it again Moose
But didn’t Loeffler teach us that getting players out of the program that you didn’t recruit should be celebrated. Which is it? Jans was going to run off players because they hated him? Holmes was gone, Henderson was gone, Clarke was gone. He actually won with the guys who hated him. He helped Holmes get to the NBA. I thought all coaches need 5 years & his own players to properly be evaluated. The difference is Jans can actually coach.
