Offseason Thread

Post by jpfalcon09 »

With BG's year being over, we've officially entered the offseason. I'd expect to see a few players (mainly seniors) sign contracts in the coming days to go pro. VGK will probably be very interested in getting Kruse to the AHL for a bit this year before the season ends, and Will Cullen will probably draw some interest. There's also been rumors of an assistant coach leaving the program.

This will be an interesting summer as the program will transition from its senior heavy core to a younger squad who will have a lot to prove.

Any chance a senior or two sticks around since they get an extra year of eligibility?

I had thought about this quite a bit, and I thought of a few names that I thought could benefit from an extra year:

Carson Musser, Justin Wells, Sam Craggs, and Max Johnson

Each would be guaranteed a spot in the everyday lineup, and each would be a great guy to have back in terms of giving this impending young team some more experience. We'll be especially thin at forward, so I think any time we could add some experience to that crew would be a plus.

I'd imagine Kruse, Ford, Gould, Dop, and Wright are almost certainly gone, though.

If Cullen signs early, I could see a D man or two sticking around. Depending on where others are in their studies, and the availability of scholarship money, there could possibly be a couple others. Eligibility doesn't necessarily mean the scholarship money is there.

Some news today:

Eric Dop is in the transfer portal for his fifth year, so Zack Rose will likely be your starting goaltender next season.

Maco Balkovec is also leaving the program to take a job in BC.

I wonder if Dop felt Rose breathing down his neck and knew he needed to get out in order to play a bunch next season. Sad to see the kid go, but I wish him nothing but the best moving forward.

Maco leaving surprises me a little bit. Whoever we hire in his place needs to fix our special teams units, particularly the PP.

From what I was told, Dop is looking for more exposure via a Big Ten or NCHC school. We'll see if he gets his wish.

My first thought was reuniting with Coach Bergeron in Oxford or heading to Ohio State to play in his native Columbus. I guess we'll see - nothing wrong with doing what's best for you and taking advantage of the extra year.

Buckeyes make sense with Nappier signing with the Pens several days ago.

BGSUHockey.com just tweeted that Rose is in the portal, as well. No way that's true... right?

I'm pretty sure it's a typo.

I can assume there's another incoming freshmen goaltender next year then? Rose and Stoever will be it, and they'll likely need a third tendy.

The third goaltender will be brought in with the understanding he may never see game action, a la Rich. To keep Dop on scholarship for a fifth year would probably mean not bringing in Stoever for another year. Theoretically, BG could keep all 10 seniors on scholarship for next year, as well as offer a full allotment of scholarships to the incoming freshman-4th year seniors. Problem becomes, for a school the size of BG, the scholarship money just isn't there.

I imagine BG is going to want to get some of the freshmen in immediately. Wonder if Maco leaving means Wozney and Pfoh are still going to attend in the fall.

The current state of the massive incoming class:

Jack Blake, D
Blake Emerson, D
Quinn Emerson, F
Keighan Gerrie, F
Jaden Grant, F
Brayden Krieger, F
Brodie McDougall, F
Dalton Norris, D
Ryan O'Hara, F
Eric Parker, D
Brett Pfoh, F
Spencer Schneider, F
Ben Wozney, D
Christian Stoever, G

Yes, those are the sons of Rob Blake and Nelson Emerson. And yes, that's Taylor Schneider's younger brother, Spencer.
