2021 Position Breakdowns
2021 Position Breakdowns
BG has started releasing their position breakdowns on the website. There is always a few surprises that come out with those. Tight ends was first and the biggest surprise to me was Andrew Bench switching from the DL to a TE position. Seems to me like there is already pretty significant depth at tight end, but not on the DL, so I thought this was a pretty weird move. Especially because Bench seemed to have a ton of potential on the defensive side of things.

They moved Carrol to Tackle. One of the new TE’s is injured, I think. Probably want Bench for blocking situations, since he has some beef and is strong. New Off has less frequency of TE’s in the slot.BillyLP wrote: ↑Fri Mar 26, 2021 10:37 am BG has started releasing their position breakdowns on the website. Re: 2021 Position Breakdowns
Raw numbers, there are 12 d linemen not counting Bench, heavy slant toward freshman. That's good numbers. They need time to build muscle and work on technique so don't expect a 2012 level DL right now.

That new former UM recruit on the DL looks intriguing.

Re: 2021 Position Breakdowns
Offensive line was today. Something that is both exciting and of concern is the fact that 15 of the 17 on the roster have freshman eligibility. Neverov and Banks-Wall are the only two who are older. It's a great foundation but probably means it's going to be a weak point yet again. I think some of the freshmen on the roster are extremely promising, though, so maybe there will be a few surprises.

I think the young guys on the O-Line are already better than recent o-lines, including some players that recently departed.....and with more beef and experience, they should be a solid group in short order.

Re: 2021 Position Breakdowns
I seem to remember a game in 2020 where for several drives there were four true freshman offensive linemen. That is nuts. Good investment in the long term future, poor prospects for the immediate future.

Re: 2021 Position Breakdowns
QB position breakdown is posted now. Last year the only healthy QBs were McDonald and Davis. And McDonald was healthy enough to play but still played through constant injury, and stats reflected. The QB potential for this year is just so high - Melton and Keller as highly touted recruits, Davis with athleticism and experience, Gunther with experience at an ACC team, McDonald if he lives up to his billing. Potential is one thing, production of course is another.
Additionally I was unfamiliar with Kody Sparks before the position breakdown. I presume he is a walk on. Still a 6'5 220 QB, walk on or not, is a commodity.
No solid prediction of who starts. I'm quietly hoping for Riley Keller because he is a local highly touted recruit who could have gone to so many other solid programs but chose to stay home and build something special locally, and success from someone like that would be a great recruiting pitch.

If I were a betting man, I would project that McDonald starts with a short leash, and Melton is 1A.MarkL wrote: ↑Fri Apr 02, 2021 11:27 am QB position breakdown is posted now. Re: 2021 Position Breakdowns
I believe you that this is the projected order, but why has Melton been the one who seems to be the foregone chosen one between Keller and Melton. Keller was definitely a more highly touted recruit if you're looking at offers, and seems to have a stronger arm with a quick release. Melton comes from a powerhouse program and definitely has the look of a solid QB, but I didn't think his highlight reel was quite as impressive. I'm sure the best QB will play, I just feel like I am missing something when people have talked about the QB depth chart so far.roguewarrior wrote: ↑Fri Apr 02, 2021 2:41 pmIf I were a betting man, I would project that McDonald starts with a short leash, and Melton is 1A.MarkL wrote: ↑Fri Apr 02, 2021 11:27 am QB position breakdown is posted now. Re: 2021 Position Breakdowns
It is just what is playing itself out, QB wise. I think if it were today, with McDonald out, you could toss a coin between Melton and Davis. Keller isn’t there yet, and the Syracuse kid just got back, like last practice.

Re: 2021 Position Breakdowns
RBs were posted today. All positions accounted for so far you have ...
- 0 seniors
- 2 juniors
- 1 sophomore
- 25 freshmen all assuming my quick reading on mobile is accurate
Poor prospects for this year. But if these freshmen stick together rather than dissolve away like upper classes, there is a real program being built before our eyes.

Re: 2021 Position Breakdowns
Stewart looks real good this spring and the early enrollee freshman looks like he can play too. Hope the incoming freshman can play, so we have some depth.

Re: 2021 Position Breakdowns
DL breakdown is up today. We have a few more bodies in that group than I thought, with some very good size. Skill and production are another discussion. They're super young (which group isn't?) and unproven. If that size and weight is muscle, they might end up being a bit better than we expect. If they aren't bulked up and mature yet, it might be another dream season for the opposition's running backs.

Not sure if I believe those weights.....BillyLP wrote: ↑Fri Apr 16, 2021 11:48 am DL breakdown is up today. We have a few more bodies in that group than I thought, with some very good size.
