As we prepare for the 2021 season. Let’s always revisit this for perspective.
Who do you plan to hire as your defensive coordinator if you get the job?
I’m going to keep Carl Pelini, then hire Jim Hermann who has been out of football. If he leaves I’ll get Brian VanGorder all before we even play a single game.

Re: Transfers
Based on the position breakdowns so far on the athletic department website, it appears there is an entire team worth of freshmen on roster. Not ideal for winning. But if they stick together, stability is on the horizon. Stable recruiting classes build a strong program foundation. The last stable recruiting class was ... 2013? All I can ask for realistically right now is stability.

Re: Transfers
What on Loeffler’s resume says stability? He then goes and add assistants whose best years were multiple decades before the transfer portal arrived. We were sold Clawson (stability), reality is it’s less stable than the Jinks years. We were sold Clawson (stability) with a guy who never stays anywhere the length of the contract BGSU gave him. It was never Clawson. The only people convinced this route will work in the end is Moose, Kingston Jr & Lloyd Carr.
Re: Transfers
Pretty dramatic??? I’ll tell you what is pretty dramatic. Being outscored 45-11 versus your conference foes for the worst two-way margin in the history of our program! Not against Power Five teams, simply MAC teams. How about losing player after player after player after player in a year when you are allowed to return everyone! How about going winless, getting blown out and simply destroyed by another winless team that hasn’t won a game in two years. How about watching a coach use an offense that will never be able to keep pace with conference foes. Has he not seen what has worked in previous years here, has he not seen the kind of points MAC teams score, and yet he still tries to run this crap? Then again, it doesn’t matter what you try to run on offense anyway when your defense looks the way ours does including a horrific hire as his DC when his tenure began here. So yeah, I guess me doubting Loeffler’s ability is being “dramatic.” GTF outta here man.roguewarrior wrote: ↑Thu Apr 08, 2021 9:23 pmPretty dramatic. One of those guys you are so worried left the team, punched a teammate out on the bus after a game, for sitting in his seat. Stupid coach.

Re: Transfers
Given the unprecedented mess that Mike Jinks left behind, I can't see a scenario where Scot Loeffer was going to rack up wins right out of the gate. This is particularly true given his commitment to building classes with freshmen rather than transfers, an emphasis that makes a lot of sense to me, and that clearly has buy in from Moose.
I don't see any choice here but to be patient. I'm honestly not sure how much better this team will be in terms of wins and losses this fall. (This is such a young team!) But I'm not too worried about any of these player departures.
Loeffer is building a new culture from the ground up. His recruits appear to remain committed and focused. So long as this is the case, I think this football team will get better.

Re: Transfers
Of our current 88 players (until more leave), 65 of those 88 are FRESHMEN!!! That means 74% of our entire team are freshmen!!! That is mind-boggling! I have never, ever seen anything like this. We have 4, I repeat, 4 seniors now, and 3 of those 4 seniors are on special teams (a kicker, a punter and a snapper). Jerry McBride is our lone senior position player. I repeat, we have 1 senior positions player. This roster rivals what you would see if a plane crash wiped out a team and they had to start over from scratch. And I'm not trying to be funny by saying that, it's true. And keep in mind, this is happening in a time where players are allowed a free extra year, and we're still looking like this. It's truly incredible.
This is how the current roster is broken down by class, including walk-ons.
88 - Total Players
45 - Freshmen
20 - Redshirt Freshman
7 - Sophomores
12 - Juniors
4 - Seniors

Re: Transfers
I can't believe people get this worked up over something so ultimately meaningless as college athletics. What once as a fun diversion enjoyed on a crisp fall afternoon has become a chore to follow on cable or the internet...now it's just something they run between the commercials.
Completely disposable and utterly pointless...at best a distraction from the issues that actually matter

It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

Considering no player has won more than 3 games a season, is this really a bad thing?

Re: Transfers
Correct assessment. I hate conceding that a sixth straight bad season is inevitable. But it is. Five straight bad seasons have led to ... mass departures by upper clansmen who have only played bad seasons. I'm willing to stomach another bad season if it is an investment in the future.Schadenfreude wrote: ↑Fri Apr 09, 2021 4:26 pm Given the unprecedented mess that Mike Jinks left behind, I can't see a scenario where Scot Loeffer was going to rack up wins right out of the gate. Re: Transfers
This is how I feel, as well. Would I have done things differently if I were Loeffler to try and keep a roster more intact? Yes, for sure, but he opted for the longer route in the hopes of building something more lasting. If it works we’ll all owe him a lot of gratitude. If it doesn’t, he’ll be remembered as fondly as Jinks. It’s too early to tell at this point.MarkL wrote: ↑Fri Apr 09, 2021 5:40 pmCorrect assessment. Not related, but felt it was important off-season information:
According to the Toledo Blade, Coach Loeffler battled COVID-19 for two weeks, including a stay in the hospital for a few days.
Glad to hear he’s doing better now.

Re: Transfers
Nobody celebrated the Jinks recruiting classes quite like this board and Jason Knavel. The same people said the same thing. Not because they thought Jinks would actually turn it around. Before it was blame Babers and his lack of recruiting for why BGSU was horrible. Scotty Miller and James Morgan then got drafted. Now, it’s all the bad kids (the same group this board was drooling over a few February’s back) as the reason BGSU is horrible. Nope, it’s the incompetent coach who is trying to recreate Michigan of the 90s in a world of college free agency. The same coach who has been let go or would have been let go at 4 straight jobs.
