Athlon rips BG with brutal outlook in 2021preseason mag
To no one's surprise, Athlon picked picked dead last in the MAC East and dead last in the MAC overall. They also picked BG #128 out of the 130 FBS teams nationally. In the unit breakdown in the MAC where they ranked all 12 teams on 1 being the best and 12 the worst for the positions of QB, RB, WR/TE, OL, DL, LB, DB, they had BG #12 in every single category except OL, where BG was picked #11. They also did an All-MAC 1st, 2nd and 3rd teams and BG doesn't have a single player who made their All-MAC squads. They went on to describe our offense as "catastrophic" and our defense as "staggering (in a bad way)." I've been buying preseason magazines since the mid-1990's and this is the the most gruesome preseason prediction for BG that I've ever seen across the board. There have been some bleak predictions over the years, including the last few, but nothing compares to this outlook. And sadly, I can't disagree.
GO BG!!!

Yeah... it may well be a long year once again.
But maybe we'll surprise some folks? I don't even need wins right now, I just need to see that there's a clear (positive) direction that the program is moving towards.

It takes between 8-12 years to properly rebuild a program. We should all realize that by now and just not read the mags or watch the team play until Loeffler has had that decade to truly instill his imprint on the program.

I'm usually an overly optimistic person, especially when it comes to BG sports - but I gotta say, this made me laugh. Great line. Lol

I will not be shocked if BG is as bad as predicted by this mag, but I also won't be shocked if they're better and surprise a team or two. Given how things have evolved over the past two seasons, there really isn't a good way to evaluate exactly what this team will actually do on the field. I do know this: I'll watch a game or two to see how they look. If they truly are as bad as this prediction says, I will ignore the remainder of the season as I ignored basically the past two seasons (I did watch that great Toledo upset, though). No need to watch a total crap team play and get myself more cranky than I (likely) already am.

I don’t even have to read it. It’s the easiest piece to write, knowing zero about a team: the worst team in the league the last season ( in ANY conference, any sport really) , and pile on them until they prove otherwise. There is no way anyone from Athalon set foot at BG and observed a practice. We all know far more here than they do about the team. People seem to get upset when a magazine doesn’t fawn over your team, city, school, etc.
It’s not my point of view, it’s a fact.

Yeah. It writes itself.roguewarrior wrote: ↑Tue May 25, 2021 10:01 am I don’t even have to read it. It’s the easiest piece to write, knowing zero about a team: the worst team in the league the last season ( in ANY conference, any sport really) , and pile on them until they prove otherwise.
It is what it is.
Hammb's post was clever and all, and I hear what he's saying. But the truth is this may be the most ambitious rebuild of the team we've ever seen. The program hasn't been this low since before Doyt Perry led us into Division I.
I'll be pleasantly surprised if the Falcons win more than a game this year. For now, I'm going to trust the process. I accept this may take more time than Urban Meyer or Gary Blackney needed.

What do you expect with a team full of freshmen? When the upper classes are just gone, you cannot expect competitive football. You have to give it some time, to develop and continue to recruit. It will be a lot of growing pains watching freshmen all over the place but hopefully little by little we see progress. If you have the patience, you can see the pieces in place for eventual success but not likely current. I'm a patient person. Have to be. I'm a dad.

Only at BGSU can you be in the room to hire Jinks, the worst coach in school history, and get a say in the next hire after that.

Didn't everyone already know this?
Old news.
(So now we won't have to hear about for the rest of the year. Thanks)

Saw Matt McDonald is back throwing on his Instagram story.
His throwing motion is definitely different now than it was this past fall. He doesn’t throw from his hip, and it looks a lot more natural - I bet it’s because his shoulder injury isn’t hampering him anymore, following surgery and rehab.
He’ll come into camp as the starter and though I expect an open competition, he’s got a very good chance to get the first shot on the field against Tennessee on September 2nd.

I mean, would we expect anything different? Especially from a publication that likely doesn't spend much time on G5 programs.
Yeah, it's going to be another down year. The season will be measured by benchmarks rather than wins and losses. We've known that for weeks now so none of this should come as a surprise.
As I tell other people, if you're not going to at the very least support the kids who are here to try and turn things around then you're better off finding something else to do with your fall Saturdays. It is what it is.

Who cares?
It's some magazine writer...probably a free lancer... who knows little or nothing about college football beyond the same 3-5 teams that have a shot to win the "title" each year.
You want to maximize your enjoyment of BGSU football? Forget all of this nonsense and just go to the games...enjoy the atmosphere and hope for the best. Why would you even spend five seconds worrying about the perceptions of someone who doesn't actually know jack about any of this?

Indeed! Is there a better time than a traditional college football Saturday? A great team/great game is icing on the cake for the day, particularly if you don’t have a dog in the fight, so to speak. Magazine projections at MAC level are useless. I laugh at the 247 rosters, projections, depth charts..... kids listed that have been off the team for over a year, actual starter not even shown....Flipper wrote: ↑Wed May 26, 2021 9:16 am Who cares?

I couldn’t agree more. So let’s stop the insanity of making the BGSU Football coach the highest paid employee of BGSU. Let’s stop the insanity of using student fees to overpay mediocre coaches & assistant coaches. Let’s stop the insanity of losing 4 million dollars per year for football. If actual winning doesn’t matter anymore, let’s talk to Findlay & Defiance College about how they do it, instead of spending money on search firms to hire coaches on the brink of termination.
