No doubt. BG benefitted from a lot of mistakes by the Vols. Dropped passes, etc. There's a lot to work on, especially offensively.hammb wrote: ↑Thu Sep 02, 2021 11:17 pmYeah. They were more competitive than expected but can't just call it a morale victory and be happy. Need to see similar effort play itself out by competing and beating Mac teams.MarkL wrote: ↑Thu Sep 02, 2021 11:12 pm Next week against South Alabama will be a better measuring stick. I agree the team looks way stronger than last year but still has lots to gain for future years in the conditioning department. Really curious to see how the team goes against a similar caliber program.
Tennessee does not look good at all, Milton is awful.

That deep ball was Milton’s only completion of the 2nd half for Tennessee.
He’s 1/8 since halftime.

Re: 9/2 at Tennessee
South Alabama hit a few grand slams in the transfer portal on offense at QB, RB and WR. Both their QB and RB were Top-10 players at their positions nationally coming out of high school. Bentley was a Top-10 QB who has played at both South Carolina and Utah and Kareem Walker was the #2 RB in the nation from Mississippi State. They also added WR Dailey from Kentucky and an OL from Mississippi State. All are expected to start and that QB/RB duo are two guys they could never have gotten out of high school. Now that's how you hit the transfer portal.MarkL wrote: ↑Thu Sep 02, 2021 11:12 pm Next week against South Alabama will be a better measuring stick. All around some good indications. Defense ran out of steam but until then played well. Offense was a hand tied behind their back with missing some skills players and an offensive line that badly limits play calling. And yet made it interesting for a while.
The 2012-15 teams would have won this game. Perhaps some day Loeffler will have a team that wins these games.

Not sure why Tennessee is running tempo and calling timeouts up 32 with a minute to play.

FINAL: Tennessee 38, BGSU 6
We’re a little better this year, folks. Let’s open the home portion of the schedule with a great effort next weekend.

Much better showing than I anticipated. Defense looks much better, offense looks better at the skills but pretty terrible on the line. I really liked the look of some of the freshmen. There are some good things to look forward to with this roster.

BG covered, so there's that. Lots to feel positive about, lots to work on. They say football teams improve the most between Week 1 and 2.
O-line is obviously going to be the biggest bugaboo this season. Overall though, better than I expected and we saw some jam from a very young team.
BG also wound up winning the turnover battle, 2-0.

Re: 9/2 at Tennessee
Well, that was about what I expected. We were clearly overmatched and still aren't very good. But, I did see some improvement at times. To me the biggest glaring weakness is our OL. They couldn't open up anything for the running game and a number of pass plays were blown up by terrible pass protection. We really needed a couple grad transfers, transfers or Juco OL, and got none. And it's showing. I'm really surprised we didn't target even one knowing what we have there. Plus we've lost two transfers recently. We may not win a line of scrimmage battle against any DL this year. We've got miles to go there. The offense, partically the passing game, looked better at times, but it was a lot of dink and dunk. Again, with the pressure blowing up the line, what else could we do anyway. The defense got carved up a lot, but because of how bad we were last year, they actually looked somewhat better. Our FG kicking was excellent, that was nice to see. All that said, I liked that we kept battling all game long. We were never going to win this game, never threatened to even score a single TD all game long, and yet, we kept plugging away. I wanted to come away with something, anything from this game after what all we've been through. There were a few sprinkles of life and a few sliver linings in this game somewhere. Let's put it this was, it certainly could have gone a lot worse, and didn't. To me, that's at least a little bit of something.

Re: 9/2 at Tennessee
Quick thought. Milton was not good for Tennessee. The announcers rightly gushed over his arm strength. But just like at Michigan last year he was reliable for a great throw here and there with long periods of stagnation. The TN offensive line and backs were the offense. Meanwhile McDonald was effectively the BG offense.
So here's the thought. When was the last time, prior to last night vs an SEC team no less, when BG had the better QB?

Probably the MAC title game in 2015 when Matt Johnson was running the show?MarkL wrote: ↑Fri Sep 03, 2021 7:06 am Quick thought. Milton was not good for Tennessee. I don't know if we can definitively say BG had the better QB (could be wrong!) in any game of the Morgan/Doege era.
Maybe you could say Loy was the best player on the field when we beat Toledo in 2019? He was certainly the key there.

Yeah I’d argue Matt Johnson was a better QB than Joshua Dobbs the last time we played Tennessee. Maybe the best QB of anyone BG played that season.mbenecke wrote: ↑Fri Sep 03, 2021 7:33 amProbably the MAC title game in 2015 when Matt Johnson was running the show?MarkL wrote: ↑Fri Sep 03, 2021 7:06 am Quick thought. Our defense did a nice job..at least against my expectations. I didn't see too many missed tackles...that Darren Anders has come a long way. Ferguson really solidifies the secondary.
I think we may be a surprise team in the MAC this year
