Portal inflow

Post by roguewarrior »

Preface: nothing makes my blood boil more than players, on any level, that run smack or taunt opposing players that just beat them; or ones that do self promoting rituals and dancing while their team is getting their asses kicked. It’s embarrassing! See also Kirk Herbstreit comment about Miami.

Insert player X. Anointed a starter and TEAM LEADER on arrival. Can’t finish a lift or a practice without sitting out. Missed Sunday morning post game lift…. Anyone else would have been lambasted publicly, made an example of, then thrown out of practice… he gets a private talking to and a hug….. watch him dance and taunt and pull himself from the game when tired, as he did in Tennessee. I watched him stand on our bench, back to the field, yelling crap at Tenn fans. I watched him dance on the field during time outs (as we were getting drilled) like he was happy at the club. Often. Most players are shaking their heads in dismay. So much for not bringing in locker room killers….

Players promised spots in this portal that don’t earn their spot, or certainly the team leader title…. Will Un-do all that is good in a locker room. Quickly. If this season goes bad, and players know if they stay, they are screwed anyway because incoming transfers are guaranteed spots….. you could see a mass exodus. Why stay?

This portal will ruin college football, as we know it. We better have a really good year, or I fear it will all come unglued.

You’ll figure out who player x is by half time Saturday.
It’s not my point of view, it’s a fact.

Going to guess it's Ferguson?

I love enthusiasm on the field (dance, run mouth to opponents, strut around, etc.) when you’re winning or at least competing. When you’re getting beat, and by a lot, drop your head a get back to work. In the same thought tuck your large ears in your helmet on opposing fans - hush them with success.

I will be very disappointed if we see the behavior you describe go without correction.

Good guess. The other transfer has been here a week and put in as starter. Certainly a good player, but tossed from Va Tech for a reason… feel bad for the DBs I know a little bit. High character kids getting gut punched.

Agreed. A little celebration is OK when you are rolling. Not, however trying to taunt the other players….just so weak. You will see it, and it will go un-corrected.

I noticed Ferguson running his mouth a bit after a few plays from the broadcast so he was the first player who came to mind.

I take this more of a sign that Scot recognizes he needs to show improvement this year and is deferring to experience brought in from the portal. Not saying it's right or wrong. It's what a lot of people on here have been clamoring for.

I guess I'll pay close attention to him on Saturday.

If one player on the field is acting like a clown and ten others shake their heads, it should get worked out on it's own. Hopefully.

You hope. The head shaking is more about the coaches ignoring everything they preach; and praising, rewarding players that do the opposite….things that make players lose faith and hope in the process. Not so much their antics, but the practice and weight room effort…. Adherence to rules/process….. then appointing them your leader? This is the BS that getting players to come here in the portal brings…..
It’s not my point of view, it’s a fact.

Ferguson and Taylor are the best players in our secondary. Period. That's a fact, not an opinion, and it's not even up for debate. Anyone who doesn't like the fact that a few transfers have come in and are starting in front of essentially a bunch of freshmen (which is 70% of our team) need to face the reality of the situation at hand. We are bad. Really bad. We are arguably the worst team in the country and are the youngest team in the nation. Part of that reason was all the guys who transferred out or left BG over the past couple years. We lost a ton of guys for whatever reason, and some on here looked at it as a next man up scenario for us. Well, that's partly what led us to where we are today, looking up at everyone else. To try and offset that, we were fortunate enough for a few guys to transfer in - thank God. And if you think that's unique to BG, you couldn't be more wrong. Nearly every team in the nation has tapped into these transfers, especially this year, some very heavily. BG added several, while some teams added a ton. For anyone not liking the fact that they are starting in front of anyone. That's tough $hit. It's called earning your position, and we're so bad in some areas that yes, we literally had a guy (Taylor) walk into camp a week before the season and won a spot. Why? Because he's head and shoulders better than what we had. As for Ferguson, he's so good to what we have that we're actually playing him out of position in the secondary because he's still better than what we have there too. He's an All-Conference talent in the MAC, and aside from Taylor, who else in our defensive backfield is? Hell, who else on our entire team is for that matter? I think we know the answer to that.

Now, while I love the fire and passion Ferguson was playing with vs Tennessee (when was the last time we seen anything remotely like that from a BG player since 2015???), if he indeed was doing some of the other alleged antics, then yes, he should be spoken to about that. But this kid is a difference maker for us and is already one of the best players on our team. And if a teammate behind him in the depth chart has a problem with that, then he needs to ante up and take the position from him, or whomever is ahead of him in practice. That goes for anyone else on the team, or any teaming the country for that matter. This is D-I football for crying out loud. There are so many kids afraid or unwilling to face some adversity or competition which is mainly why the transfer portal has ballooned out of control. Many of them leave one school to face the same kid of situation at the next. And I know I'm not alone by saying I am beyond sick and tired of seeing where BG embarrassingly stands. Because I'll tell you one thing, if we had 20 more guys out there with Ferguson-type talent, fire and energy (minus whatever antics), then we sure as hell wouldn't be in the place we are today, that's for damn sure. The kid is a baller.

There is a lot of truth in what you said. You are also missing the point. 500-1000 High schoolers will not get scholarships this year, as teams leave spots for the portal. When every coach promises starting roles to transfers to get them in, many who get screwed out of their opportunity will leave. It will be a revolving door in no time. So if you think you will raid the portal every year and make BG (or anywhere else) a sustained winner, you are mistaken. Loeffler said it himself coming in, now it’s 180. I think the demise of the NBA should be an indicator that this model will fail, and ruin everything.

Also, If you love A guy running his mouth and shoving the guy that smokes him for a TD, enjoy. Also, there is no “minus the antics”.

I'm not missing the point, but I think the point you're trying to make is actually going right over your own head. The definition of transfer is to move a person, place or situation to another. Meaning, when related to football, when a player transfers to another school, he's not only filling a spot, he's also creating a void in the place he left. This isn't taking away opportunities for high school players per your example by any facet when related to pure overall numbers in football at all. It's simply the shifting of numbers. It's basic mathematics. Schools are capped at the number of scholarships they can offer and fill, no matter whether they are given to grad transfers, qualifying non-graduate transfers, Juco's, or high school signees. Walk-on's can also be awarded scholarships, all of which effect a team's counters per year.

The problem we are seeing with the portal is actually opposite of your point. The portal is actually inflated by transfers who do not have new homes. This isn't taking away scholarships from high schoolers because many of these were/are guys who were/are already on scholarships themselves. Where schools like BG are hurt by this is, the NCAA won't allow schools to increase their counters per year based on that factor. Meaning, when guys transfer, you can't simply offer more scholarships to offset it. It's why and how you see a school like BG sign a full recruiting class and then still bring in a group of other guys above their cap number. Some of these guys are walk-on's, but a number of these guys will factor into other recruiting classes' years by getting their scholarship aid start from a recruiting class year that differs from the year they came in. This is how a team like BG is trying to work around the NCAA's caps and counters rules. It's not the perfect fix like what the NCAA allowing an adjustment to caps and counters would do (ie, allowing an additional counter if the player who left was in good academic standing), but it helps to try and bridge the gap until we get on the right side of the numbers (85/25).

And nowhere at all in my previous post did I say anything of the sort that raiding the portal would make anyone a sustained winner. You made that assumption based on something that wasn't said at all. What I said was nearly every school is tapping into the portal, some much more than what BG has. And what Loeffler learned quickly and changed his tune on too was, BG needs to help itself with the transfer portal as well, such as everyone else is. It's quickly become an important and vital tool for coaches and teams as they navigate and adjust for the ever-changing rosters from year to year nowadays based on players coming and going. I also didn't say anything of the sort about loving a guy running his mouth or shoving, so you can reread my post again to clarify another assumption on your part. What I said was I love the fire and passion he played with and that he's better than anyone we had on the roster in the defensive backfield before he came here, and that if the antics are true, that yes, the coaches need to deal with that with him.

If every team leaves 5 spots open in 2022 for transfers, as Loeffler said he will, that is 500+ Players that won’t get a D1 scholarship. What would have gone to a high Schooler, is going to a transfer.

Again, no. And I'm not not sure why you are backing your argument implying transfers are taking away scholarships from high schoolers? They aren't taking anything away from high schoolers because their own eligibility clocks are still running themselves. That's the key point. I think what you're not understanding is, not every player who transfers out is filled by another player transferring in. The transfer out can be replaced by a high schooler (some who actually now have an opportunity that didn't even exist until the transfer happened in the first place), a transfer, a walk-on, etc. That is up to each school to sort out. The question across the board is, does a school have a counter to offer in that year's respective recruiting class or not? This is where the NCAA's 85/25 rules come into play. The only real wrinkle to that is the Covid year that has produced the Super Seniors we see this season.

Maybe this will help your math? Google the subject and you can read 50 other articles confirming what I said. It even quotes BG coach Warner saying same.

“ If the 130 schools at the Division I-A level each reserved five scholarships for transfers, that would mean 650 fewer scholarships for high school athletes”

And more recent:
