We used to play one of these a year to meet the average people played in front of requirement to stay 1A. Now we have to play two just to stay somewhat afloat financially. TV...OK...more accurate to say "Media" today... and the money that goes with it destroyed college football for all but the very top of the food chain

And by "somewhat afloat" you still mean, "costing our students way more than it ever has in the past, but not as much as it would if we didn't play these 2 money games."

Also worth noting that the "very top of the food chain" is a MUCH smaller group than what many schools will admit. College football is only good for about 4-5 programs on an annual basis. There are another 10-20 that on any given year might be worthwhile. The rest of us are here just twiddling our thumbs spending more and more money on an ever diminishing product.

I will say, product on the field notwithstanding, last weekend was a glorious time at BG. Fantastic atmosphere in the parking lots, events for alumni, events for kids, and thousands of students/alumni partying all day out there. We got to the lots around noon and parking was already picked over. The students were out in droves.

Of course, a fraction of these people actually entered the Doyt, the game was an afterthought for most people, but the pre-game atmosphere out there would be tough to replicate without the football.

Typical for Homecoming. Lots of people stay in the lots and party throughout the day. The university still made out like bandits with the $10 parking fee. IMO, covid had a lot to do with the bigger tailgate crowd as obviously it was missed last year.

I thought the game atmosphere was decent. Student showing was impressive given the current state of affairs and with the Buckeyes playing at 3:30. People around us were pretty engaged in the game. I feel it's proof people will come to the Doyt if given a reason to (primarily if there's a good product).

I have so many great football memories from when I went to school there (98-2003). Feel bad for the people that saw nothing but a bad product the entire time they were there.

BG was 12-36 in football during my time in school from 2016-2019. They were 5-14 with me in attendance.

Still love my Falcons anyway.

I was at BG from 79-81 (drop out...temp at UT) and then 83-85 to finish. First run sucked...2nd was awesome. The 11-0 Denny Stolz quit before the bowl game team was the fall after I graduated...but I still had ties, so it seemed like it was part of my time there

2005-09 for me. Best moments were the wins at Minnesota and at Pitt (got to see that one in person). Outside of that there wasn't much to cheer for. I remember 2005 being full of promise until Omar got hurt and then the heartbreak against Toledo in overtime at home to miss out on the MAC Championship.

1998-01 for me. The final years of the Blackney era were as bad as any since. I knew a lot of the guys on the team, and the work ethic overall was beyond awful. I'll never forget how angry some of the hard working guys were when they lost to Buffalo. Of course the '01 season with Urban helped end my time on campus in a good way. If not for that one season of Urban I would almost certainly not still be here talking BG football or attending BG football games.

The Charles Sharon catch to beat Purdue will always be my favorite memory in 2003. Some of my other favorites were 99 game against Toledo, 2002 double OT over WMU, gameday and 2001 beat down of Toledo.

Least favorite game/half was the second half of the 2004 Toledo game.

'89 -'93. When you are young and living in the moment, you often don't realize how good it is in a historical context. I had no exposure to BG football prior to arriving on campus. Being there for those back to back championship teams and the bowl wins was great, but I don't recall the tailgate atmosphere being anything like what it became later on. I didn't fully appreciate the significance of what those teams did until things really went sour later in the Blackney years. The down turn made me savor it that much more when the program was resurrected in the early 2000's. Living 15 mins from BG during those years allowed me to go to all of the games and the tailgating was about as much fun as you could have with your clothes on.

I don't think it's a permanent shift in feeling, at least for me.

I don't either. Six years ago we stomped Maryland at their place, then gutted out a win a couple of weeks later at Purdue. I love when we get wins like that and I expect to get back to being able to have a real shot again in some of these nonconference games.

That was my time at BG too. The first MAC championship was so unexpected... kinda came out of nowhere. Lots of close wins and big plays from the defense. The second MAC was also great, with a close game against Ohio State and running the table after Wisconsin... so much fun!!!

It is nice to read about all of the great days BG has had over the last 40 years on the football field. Hopefully this decade brings some more. We have not been treated for sometime now....Also, wondering if any MAC teams are in a position to dominate over a 10 year stretch? ie to play toe to toe within the top 25 and dominate within the league year after year.

Thanks. That was a probably a year or 2 shy of every FBS game being picked up by some ESPN format. As far as I know that game wasn’t televised anywhere. Just seen handful of clips from News stations.
