Clawson did not inherit a markedly better situation. Brandon's incompetence had the program under scholarship restrictions for academics. His retention rate on recruits was almost as bad as Jinks. Clawson had some talent to work with in year one. Then he had to build from the ground up. We had one poor year.. but you could see the progress from year two to year three. I don't see a lot of progress here in year three.
Call me crazy...but it seems like the primary defense of Loeffler is the incompetence of his predecessor. I don't think you get to play that card any more three years in
The fact Clawson inherited talent in year one automatically makes his situation better. He had a year to recruit without the on field product being a total dumpster fire. Where does he end up if Sheehan transfers out? That's the exact scenario Loeffler walked into.
No one is blaming Jinks at this point. I'm certainly not. I also don't consider a bastardized six game schedule where the team could hardly practice together as a year to judge him. So next year is year three for me. If there isn't the progress he claims there will be, then good riddance.

It is certainly fair to put some blame on Jinks for the roster being as young as it is. He recruited the 2017 and 2018 classes which should be the senior leadership right now and they're gone. That's on him for not identifying prospects who could cut it for a college career. Jinks bears responsibility for the lack of seniors just the way Brandon bore it for the same situation in 2011.
Senior day in 2011 there were so few guys' names getting announced as seniors playing their last home game. And of those, just a handful were freshmen at BG - guys like Ben Bojicic, Kevin Alvorado, and Ray Hutson were rare. Big names like Kamar Jorden and Eugene Cooper were transfers. Then come 2012 and 2013 the senior classes were full and represented guys playing four years at BG. In other words how it is supposed to be.
This senior day will be similar to 2011. An indication that Loeffler has stabilized the program will be future senior days when guys who played four good years at BG and developed their careers from mistake prone freshmen to team leaders get their names called.
MarkL has spoken.
You may all now return to your daily lives.

My comment was more so about the current on field product. Loeffler does own that there seems to be a pattern of the same mistakes being made week after week without any sign of corrections. Youth or not, after 6-7 games you should start seeing some of those bugaboos go away and quite frankly we haven't. I think that's where a lot of the frustration lies with folks, me included at times.
So go ahead and scrub the 0-5 record off the record books since only Bowling Green was affected by Covid. Also, take away the MAC Championship from Ball St.

Anyone with a brain will understand what I meant. Context is important, y'know.
Part of the reason the team is so young is because Loeffler wasn’t able to get many of the Jinks recruits to buy in. They may have all been awful players or have had a bad attitude and work ethic, but I doubt it. Part of coaching is getting guys to buy in and be a part of the solution. For whatever reason Loeffler lost guy after guy over his first 2 years. I imagine some of those guys could have been positive contributors?
In his defense, many of those that departed (told to leave) were numbskulls. There were a few bong teamers (that also had other baggage), sub 2.0 GPA guys, and even a few sociopaths. We also lost a few good players.
Most notable to me was Doege. I was thinking the other day… he stuck around for Spring. He and His brother, who was an ex Texas Tech QB (nfl stint) and BG coach may have seen enough of the playbook to decide to bolt? Remember, he was an established starter.
May have been a dumb move not to retain his brother on the staff??

To be quite frank, I have watched several WVU games this year and I'm not so sure that Doege is an upgrade from McDonald, at least this season. He has played pretty terribly and their entire fanbase has been calling for him to be benched.

Attended more games than any responsible student should have.

I loved Doege and I continue to root for him, but he's thrown 5 picks in 6 games this year and isn't really lighting up the scoreboard, leading his Mountaineers to a 2-4 record so far this season. I don't know how much of a difference there would be if he was here.

They could still be here, with similar results, and everybody would be crying "nepotism." How good would Doege be without his brother as a coach? Would we even know?

I don’t know what went on behind the scenes with that one…..Would love to know the true story.
I had heard through the grapevine that Doege was only getting FCS and Junior College offers and his older brother convinced Jinks to make him an offer to come to BG and Jinks agreed. Then Morgan didn't really work out in the system and there was a lot of internal pressure (I'd assume from Coach Doege) to make the switch and it ended up working out better than expected. Once Jinks was out, Doege wanted out, but didn't want to transfer down, so he was planning to ride it out until a better offer came along. Neal Brown knows the Doege family really well from his days at Texas Tech and decided to take him in. He knew he was going to WVU before he ever entered the transfer portal.
Credit to Doege for going to these places and out-performing the others on the rosters, but also a lot of it was about who the family knew.

Looks right to me. Also, Loeffler offense isn't suited for Doege either. Him leaving made sense to me.
