Re: Seen enough to decide
Urban inherited a team from Blackney who could recruit but lost his edge to personal issues. I would like to note that as a key difference. It was a similar story when Blackney took over from Ankney. If you all recall, Blackney performed BETTER than Urban his first two years at the the helm going 11-1 and 10-2 in his first two seasons along with two bowl victories (Chia Turf Bowl and the Lost Wages Silver Bowl.)
Clawson was 2-10 in his second year and 5-7 in his third. I remember a lot of people wanting his head until he had an acceptable 2012 and a very good interview year in year FIVE.
Then the half-wit Kingston decided BG needed "to go in a different direction" because somehow a defense which ranked #1 in the MAC and #10 in the nation and which also shut down one of the best offenses in the nation (#5) in the MAC Championship needed "fixing." Oh, that's right, it was only Matt Johnson's performance that won that game (which was an awesome performance but without the D, he doesn't achieve those numbers.)
Enter in Dino "the best defense is a good offense" Babers and the greased slide to the bottom is set with his high school replacement adding graphite to the grease.
Somehow, y'all think Loeffler is suppose to fix this manufactured train wreck in year three? Y'all are nuts - N. V. T. S. nuts.
I was doubtful after the first game, but after further review, I'm willing to give him another year to achieve a winning record. He inherited a complete disaster and he's invested in the program. I'm more than willing to give him a fourth year before assembling the gallows.

Re: Seen enough to decide
I don’t think we need to win ten games next year but I think they need to win 6-7 and it’s easy to see them winning 9-10 in 2023. I don’t know where the QB to win 10 games currently is but they better figure that out soon.
Re: Seen enough to decide
Keep comparing Clawson records to Loeffler records. One could coach, one can’t. One had proven it as a head coach, the other keeps losing jobs. One sounds like a head coach, the other talks about the moon and previous coaches. One brought in Mike Elko, the other Brian VanGorder. They aren’t similar and never will be. Clawson is a unique coach with a unique situation where he found his STUD QB and he and Babers propelled careers along with that QB. Loeffler can’t coach.

Re: Seen enough to decide
You know what's nuts....as in by definition "nuts"...doing the same thing with the same people and expecting a different result.
I do think it's hilarious that people still point fingers at Dino Babers. He was here two years. His first class was put together after he got the job...not ideal. His second and final class featured the highest rated QB to ever set foot on campus and a number of guys who became contributors. Then he was gone. With the talent that was left here by Clawson...his successor was going to do well...his successor was going to be poached because that's how the MAC works.
He did as well as anyone could have here and stayed as long as anyone would have

Re: Seen enough to decide
So I think we've beaten this topic to death. There's a contingent who believe Loeffler isn't right for the job, and a contingent who is going to give him 2022 to prove he has this thing moving in the right direction. Those who are willing to give him one more year understand the frustration. It sucks to be patient. This was a championship caliber program that was mismanaged about as poorly as one could imagine. That's not Scot's fault. Yes, he has stupid slogans and repeats the same excuses week after week. Yes, we're seeing questionable in-game decisions. Sure, the QB he's bought in maybe isn't as good as we were led to believe. All valid points. Still, he's in a pretty unenviable position.
This was the worst FBS program from 2018-2020. I don't think it is currently, but there's still a lot work to do. His plan of building it from the ground up may not be the way to go given the current landscape of college athletics. If he's smart, he attacks the transfer portal in the offseason and brings in guys who can make an impact, especially on offense. Ultimately he'll be judged by that and the impending results of next season. Let's see what he does.
My final takeaway from all this is it's great we have people who are passionate and care about BG football, even if there are disagreements in opinion. I think we all share the common goal of wanting this place to be not only the best in the MAC, but one of the best amongst G5 schools. The program would be in real trouble if that passion and care were to disappear.

I will sign on here and talk about football, largely because I just don't want to actually work, and I still like football.
I have attended one game this year, and I think that might be the only game I've attended in the Loeffler era. I have caught a few quarters of play here and there on television, and I see nothing compelling enough with this program to actually invest in it.
In fact, I'd say divorcing myself from planning fall Saturdays around BG football is one of the best decisions I've ever made. I'll never give up my real football on Sundays, but by freeing up Saturdays in the fall I've been able to get out and enjoy the best hiking season, best camping season, fall activities with friends, etc. To be fair though this isn't entirely specific to BG football, college football as a whole is absolutely terrible. I'll still root for BG within the landscape of college football, but the direction of the sport couldn't do much more than it has to lessen my interest.
Really the discussions on this forum are about the only attachment still remaining with BG football for me. In fact many times I question if I'm invested enough in the program to even post here (honestly not sure I can name a single player on the team other than McDonald). If I had my druthers they'd drop football entirely and devote those resources to basketball, but if we're going to insist on maintaining this program then I want it to actually win. And I've seen enough in my limited viewing to believe this coach will never win, simply because the brand of football he wants to win with doesn't exist anymore.

Re: Seen enough to decide
Yes...
On the topic of "Stud"...he was talked up as a possible replacement for Jinks...as was Tom Arth and the Kehres kid from Mt Union. Kehres doesn't appear to be setting the world afire as an assistant at TU, Stud is plugging along as an assistant and Arth has done zero outside of beating us twice...which isn't much of a resume enhancer
Hiring a HC really is a bit of a crapshoot

I wonder if he still has the same views on the transfer portal. The transfer rules (plus the additional Covid year) have changed since he was hired.jpfalcon09 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 21, 2021 9:29 am

Loeffler has changed his thinking about portal. Look at the guys he brought in this season.

Safe to say today's game was about six steps in the wrong direction.

Re: Seen enough to decide
I'd say one year in the wrong direction. Today felt like nearly every game last year. Team plays pretty well early but not well enough, then a few plays go south and then the game spins wildly out of control, against a conference peer.jpfalcon09 wrote: ↑Sat Oct 23, 2021 4:13 pm Safe to say today's game was about six steps in the wrong direction.
And that's very concerning. Up to this point, the team has been undeniably better than a year ago. They've been competing and in every game. So this is an enormous misstep.
EMU is a well coached team. Decent team. BG should be able to compete, maybe win, maybe lose close, but certainly shouldn't lose in a blowout.
The defense played well enough in prior games to allow a poor offense opportunities to win. That advantage was gone today and if it is gone in future games, big trouble. I've become a bit of a pessimist regarding BG football, six straight years of misery will do that to you. So I'm really concerned that the EMU game is one of five straight 2020-like games to close the season. I seriously hope I'm wrong.
And this s**t can't continue into next year. That's not competitive. Fix the offense. Make it so the defense doesn't have to keep bailing them out.
